Pick of the Day: (2nd Return of) Blamblamblam (in LA) 4/19

April 18, 2022
News
Anna Seregina & Kyle Mizono, blamblamblam, brian kiley, brodie reed, chris thayer, comedy show, free show, james adomian, k town, los angeles comedy, max beasley, ron lynch, stand up comedy, steph tolev, Vanessa Jeha

In November 2021, we thought we had reached a threshold where we all the things that we knew and love in comedy could somewhat return to happening as regularly scheduled pre-pandemic.

Then, Omicron hit and set most folks/shows/etc. back for months. Thankfully, we’re back to where they rescheduled their shows to or decided to return again and that includes one of LA’s torch bearing shows, Blamblamblam. Faithfully housed in what seems like the lower decks of tall ship in K-Town’s one and only R-Bar, Blam has offered up an otherworldly monthly comedy show for almost a decade and a half.

There’s such a mystical energy to it even when it’s simply a well curated collection of comedians from many corners and disciplines of the art form by one DeMorge Brown. This 2nd return of Blamblamblam is set for this Tues. Apr. 19th at 9PM ish PT (doors at 7PM PT) and a barnburner of a line-up including Ron Lynch, Brodie Reed, Max Beasley, Anna Seregina & Kyle Mizono, Chris Thayer, James Adomian, Vanessa Jeha, Steph Tolev, Brian Kiley, and host Paul Danke & resident mischief starter Davey Johnson are all set to welcome Blam back into the world of living once more.

Oh yeah, it’s free to attend in case we didn’t sell you on it enough already.

The rise of Frankie Quinones is something we’ve been really relishing for years now. Whether it be his characters like Creeper or Dress Up Gang or his own stand-up, Frankie’s comedy has always charmed us with equal parts heart and silliness.

This September, Frankie will be doing his own evening, presumably with his entire comedy arsenal, at the Wiltern. We’re pretty sure this will be the first big theater he’ll be playing in town and we’re damned sure you shouldn’t miss it.

Tickets start at $25 and you need to go them here.

Normally dazzling the folks of NYC, Peter Smith and Sandy Honig (perhaps you’ve seen her as part of Three Busy Debras?) are bringing their comedy-striptease-music-variety extravaganza The Bongo Hour for a pop-in at Dynasty Typewriter along with Ben Moss and Bang Bang Luna.

See what we’ve been missing out on this coast (not to mention that you’ll get to enjoy the likes of John Early and Patti Harrison)

The Bongo Hour will be happening at 10PM on Fri., May 10th and tickets are $10 now and $15 on day of. Go get ‘em here (we hear they’re closing to selling out FYI).

Next Saturday, you’ll get the chance to not only see The Lucas Bros. present a solid line-up of their favorite performers including Byron Bowers, Sasheer Zamata, and Rosebud Baker, but you’ll also get to see them run their new hour and let their pointed, but still chill (and also silly) comedic stylings delightfully wash over you.

Their hour, entitled A Will To Believe will be at Dynasty Typewriter near MacArthur Park.

Tickets are going for $20 at the door, but you can snag ‘em for $15 right now.

We sincerely hope that Eddie Pepitone goes down in comedy history as one of the greats. Pepitone is a truly electrifying performer that somehow makes every performance special and enthralling even if you know some of the material by heart.

Thus, you should definitely be in the room when his latest special is being taped next month at Dynasty Typewriter. There are two shows on Sat., Feb. 16th, 8PM & 10PM, that you can attend. Also, Dana Gould will be featuring and Caitlin Gill will be hosting, which might just be more brilliant comedy than we all deserve.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door and you can and very much should get them here and here respectively

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at door for both nights, Tues., Jan 8th and Wed., Jan. 9th, both at 8PM. Best get them quick as they will very likely sell out pretty fast.

The beloved compliment contest, Boast Rattle, is attempting something even more grandiose than trying to joke about another comedian in a positive light: joking about 2018 in a positive light.

It’s perfectly named: Boast Rattle Presents: Was It Really That Bad?

There’s an amazing line-up that will attempt this near impossible feat (in case you didn’t know, 2018 was another heap of trash on fire like 2016 and 2017) and might be the best way to close out 2018.

Tickets are $10 right now and $15 at the door. Go get advance tickets here.

One of our favorite Sunday stand-up show/cookout/hangs was the Golden Hour co-hosted by MK Paulsen and Kyle Berseth featuring Simon Gibson.

However, they had to go on hiatus for awhile because they lost out on their venue, even though it was a DIY, makeshift space made from a parking lot/loading dock.

We’ll, we’re happy to announce that Golden Hour is returning this Sunday, July 15th with the same great stand-up, free hot dogs, and basking under the LA sunset/dusk, but doing so in Mid-City at START LA (2266 Venice Blvd., Los Angeles, CA).

The first line-up is a doozy with Daniel Rugg Webb, Maggie Maye, Sheng Wang, Megan Gailey, and Moses Storm on top of it being MK’s birthday.

So, make this your plans for this Sunday. Doors open at 7PM. Get more details here.

By himself, Joey Greer, one of our favorite improvisers around, puts on one hell of a show by improvising bits for an hour with the aid/disruption of a DJ.

It’s as crazy of a “conversation” you can have (with music playing intermittently).
