TCB Debriefing 5/4-5/9/24: The Office, Jon Stewart, Dropout Presents, David Cross, Sam Morrison, Cole Escola, Isabella Rossellini, Cate Blanchett, Alec Berg, SXSW, SNL

May 10, 2024
News
alec berg, cate blanchett, cole escola, daily show, david cross, dropout, greg daniels, isabella rossellini, jon stewart, sam morrison, sxsw, the office

1. As the annals of television and entertainment history will remember The Office as a cultural institution that spanned several generations of fans where many a sitcom has not, it shouldn’t come as an entire surprise that The Office, the U.S. version, is going to be revisited with a new paper based business and different cast (not to dissimilar to the dynamic that What We Do in the Shadows the series has to the original movie of the same name) (Variety). Greg Daniels will be back at the helm, but Domnhall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore are the only two cast members announced thus far. We’re going to take a wild guess and say they won’t be the Jim and Pam of this spinoff of the show.

2. If you’re a little distraught by Jon Stewart only hosting Mondays on The Daily Show, fret not. He’s going to also do a podcast called The Weekly Show (AP)

3. Dropout has been busy working in semi-secret with recording not one, not two, but several specials between Brennan & Izzy, Courtney Pauroso, The Big Team, Hank Green, and more. Take a gander at Dropout’s foray into the comedy specials game (following their massive success with absurdist improv game shows) here.

4. The one and only David Cross is starting his 40 plus city stand-up tour later this year, called The End of the Beginning of The End,  on 9/11, which, arguably, is kind of too perfect. Best go get tickets here while you still can.

5. Sam Morrison is upping the ante with his solo show that’s currently destined for Broadway by essentially by Beverly Hills’ exclusive playhouse, the Wallis Annenberg Center from 9/20-10/13 (Deadline). Sam is so damn funny that it’s worth putting up with going to Beverly Hills.

6. History will likely remember Cole Escola‘s version of Mary Todd Lincoln in Oh, Mary!, despite them not “doing” any “research”. Please enjoy Cole admitting that fact and more on Seth Meyers this week here.

7. It’s somewhat cryptic and yet, very much straightforward as to what cinema legend Isabella Rossellini has gotten herself into this time with Green Porno and Other Shorts. In any case, the contrast of her ever-calming voice and animals copulating is pretty damn funny. Take a gander at the trailer  for her Green Porno and Others Shorts here, then go watch it now on Mubi.

8. Is Cate Blanchett in a comedy/sci-fi era? She has Borderlands coming up after portraying the Nordic mythological figure Hela in the MCU and now, a sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang where she plays an alien invader from the folks that brought one of the strangest releases in awhile (well, since Everything Everywhere All At Once), Sasquatch Sunset (THR). If this is the case, we are more than ready for Blanchett to do more rounds of Hot Ones to promote it.

9. Lovers of Barry and Silicon Valley, rejoice in the coming of another Alec Berg co-created series (this one will be with Adam Countee). Coming to Hulu, will be Berg and Countee’s take on the world of Formula 1 racing, which ought to be refreshing, unflinchingly satirical take that seems to have a bit of a Succession streak to it (it follows a racing family dynasty). (Deadline).

10. SXSW is branching out to London next year (The Guardian) (i.e. they’re have a non BBQ edition of SXSW).

11. SNL is on the verge of its 50th anniversary, which will lead to a gigantic retrospective of the comedy monolith (and maybe a possibility of Lorne finally handing to the keys to, ummm, a Tim Robinson type)

12. We’ll leave you with this: Free Ben Schwartz tix on 10/5 anyone? E-mail us at thecomedybureau@gmail.com and we’ll see if we know some guys (it’s just one guy).

TCB Debriefing 1/19/24-1/24/24: Jon Stewart, Oscars, Paul Danke, Ramy, Steven Wright, SNL 1975, Jean Claude Van Damme, Richard Pryor

January 24, 2024
News

1. Jon Stewart is returning to the role that made him the voice of a generation, kind of. Stewart will resume hosting duties at The Daily Show on Mondays and then serving as an EP all the other days, leaving the rest of the correspondents to switch off hosting duties (NPR). There’s a lot to hope for here as Stewart is returning in an election year when he, somewhat infamously, left during the 2016 election cycle with a potential to have to deal with Trump running under the GOP banner. Also, we’re to assume that he’ll be able to talk freely about China and AI, seemingly two topics that seemed to be dicey while he was at AppleTV+ with The Problem with Jon Stewart.

2. This year’s Oscars might be the most comedy highlighted one in history with American Fiction, Barbie, The Holdovers, and Poor Things all garnering Best Picture nominations and accompanying noms in Best Acting, Writing, and Directing categories. Perhaps, a tip of the cap is deserved to last year’s Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once taking home all the awards to make high art comedies be taken seriously.

Also, Greta and Margot getting snubbed in their respective categories for Barbie is pretty objectively wrong.

See the full list of Oscar nominations, announced this morning, here.

3. Paul Danke has been one of the most reliable fixtures in LA’s vast, decentralized stand-up scene. For several years, Danke has only refined what was already an exacting comedy sensibility that finesses rhythm, specificity, attitude, and self-awareness that he has taken to stages DIY and pristine all over LA county (and CA and, well, the country). He has a knack for making specificity in observation accessible whether it be regarding the fate of the Dodger Dog or Jimmy Buffet’s legacy because of his unassailable cool even if he is taping an hour at a place as “out there” as Humboldt, CA. You can hear all of that and some 70’s soaked tunes on his brand new album, Mad River, fresh off the AST presses. Please enjoy Mad River right now right here.

4. Ramy Youssef will have “more feelings” (on a new A24/HBO special) that will (probably) not have a solid British accent from the acclaimed Poor Things actor (and celebrated 21st century comedian).

5. Steven vs. Stephen is quite the fun time and a reminder that Steven Wright is one of the best last night guests. Feel free to go down a YouTube rabbit hole to watch Steven Wright on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson after watching his Late Show interview here.

6. Rachel Sennott will be one of the stars of an SNL origin film from Jason Reitman, SNL 1975 (Deadline). If one of the cast of this movie ends up hosting SNL to promote this movie, it should stand to reason that they just redo 1970s SNL sketches for today.

7. The Muscles from Brussels, Jean Claude Van Damme is seemingly sticking with comedy (after his lauded, self-reflexive movie JCVD) with Le jardinier (Variety). Possible crossover with Le jardinier and The Beekeeper in the not so distant future?

8. After decades of trying to get some sort of biographical adaptation of comedy icon Richard Pryor’s life on screen, it looks like Kenya Barris might be the one to do with it an upcoming 10 part series (Variety). At this point, an entire doc could be made on trying to doing some sort of biopic on Pryor’s life.

9. We’ll leave you with this: Kids heckling clowns, the serious kind, is priceless.

TCB Debriefing 11/14 & 11/15/23: David Drake, Chicken Run, John Oliver/Pūteketeke, Jon Stewart, Coyote vs. Acme, Jimmy Kimmel/Oscars, Kevin Hart

November 15, 2023
News

1. Though self-deprecation is one of the most common modes of stand-up comedy, very few comedians are actually good enough to pull it off as an entire facet of their onstage persona. This is where NYC staple David Drake thrives. Drake’s debut hour, That’s It, special showcases the precarious balance that he achieves of savagely making fun of how crestfallen his life is, but being cool, calm, and collected about it all the same time. Drake’s career as an under-the-table mover or an existential love crisis involving some M or AO rated video game is shared with enough candor, but enough comedic/emotional distance to illicit big laughs/applause for the whole hour. Essentially, the simple, but very hard trick of making fun of yourself as a comedian is getting the audience, on an unconscious level, to know that you’re actually OK (but not so OK that it sounds like you’re flat out lying). A la the name of the special, ‘that’s it’ and Drake does that pretty flawlessly. Enjoy That’s It now for free at your convenience on YouTube here.

2. The charm of Aardman remains undeniable as the sequel to Chicken Run, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, unveils its first official trailer. Their charm as a studio is so strong with stop animation and delightful British sensibilities that we’d wager this will probably fare better than the MCU’s The Marvels and Pixar’s Elemental when all is said and done.

3. John Oliver succeeded in running away with New Zealand’s Bird of the Century contest as the Pūteketeke won with a resounding landslide to the tune of 300K votes (2nd place didn’t cross the threshold of 20K votes) (NPR) after doing a segment on Last Week Tonight, buying billboards all across the planet, and appearing on Fallon to promote. This is proof positive that American/British meddling in the rest of the world is alive and well.

4. Apple might not get away with citing “creative differences” in cancelling The Problem with Jon Stewart this year (Reuters). Stewart’s commentary on China and Apple’s business ties in China might amount to some very (deserved) hot water in Congress for the tech giant.

5. After being shelved as a tax write-off and drawing the ire of a strike-weary Tinseltown and Internet, Warner Discovery has changed course on the live action/animation hybrid Coyote vs. Acme being shopped around for another distributor, which should mean that the general public will get to see it somewhere in the not so distant future (Deadline). To add insult to injury to AMPTP poster boy, David Zaslav, preview screenings from Hollywood/comedy luminaries Phil Lord and Chris Miller only garnered praise making the attempted write-off seem even more brazen and ridiculous.

6. Jimmy Kimmel will return to host The Oscars in 2024 marking his 4th time hosting the legendary awards ceremony (Variety). That still leaves plenty of room to catch up to Billy Crystal and Bob Hope, but we honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Jimmy surpasses both of them (after all, his studio is only across the street from where the awards have happened for so long).

7. Kevin Hart will be the latest recipient for the Mark Twain Prize for Humor, one of comedy’s most prestigious awards, specifically awarded to a comedian that can be credited with changing public discourse with their comedy. Any takers on how many presenters will bring up The Oscars in their speeches “honoring” Hart?

8. We’ll leave you with this: We’d like to wholeheartedly remind you that comedy is, truly and very deeply, subjective.

1. We’re losing Jon Stewart yet again. The Problem with Jon Stewart has just been cancelled before going into its third season with the industry’s most passive aggressive excuse of “creative differences” being cited (NY Times). More specifically, disagreements over covering topics such as AI and China lead to said differences and that should be a good indicator as to where Apple, a company so rich that it’s effectively its own sovereign nation.

2. Take a gander at the very clever Dina Hashem and her latest special, Dark Little Whispers, which will be the latest stand-up comedy offering from Amazon. Due out Fri Nov. 10th.

3. The Dibakar Das Roy and the title Dilli Dark might not mean much to you now, but that will all change when you see what the black immigrant experience is like in a dramedy set in India (spoiler alert: not to dissimilar to the one in the US). Hopefully, this will find its way to U.S. theaters soon.

4. Leslie Liao is, in our minds, an undeniable rising star and now is the time to go catch her ascent and brag to everyone that you knew her before whatever star turn is going to come her way. Good thing she’s on a global tour. Get tix at leslieliao.com.

5. Chris Rock and Kevin Hart are two of the biggest names in all of comedy and are synonymous with the art form with two different generations (including plenty of overlap). So, why not play MSG for four shows? That’s exactly what happened and Headliners Only is the behind the scenes documentary that captured what that entire week was like. Take a gander at it here, then look for it on Netflix on Tues. Dec. 12th.

6. The Egyptian had a small run when Netflix initially took over the celebrated revival/arthouse movie palace smack dab in the heart of Hollywood a couple of years ago, but it has laid dormant for quite some. Come Nov. 9th, it will officially reopen, which counts as one more theater that Los Angeles didn’t lose during the pandemic (Indiewire). Fingers crossed for a 2024 Arclight Hollywood reopening.

7. Congrats to Darren Roth and Kenneth Rudnicki for winning our ticket giveaways for Ramy Youssef and Daniel Sloss this weekend. FYI, you just have to pay attention to the debriefing here for future giveaways.

8. We’ll leave you with this: If any network/streaming service is aiming to shake up late night/take a chance on a talk show, please go with Beth Stelling (if that something she wants to do). It’s criminal that she isn’t on TV most nights of the week.

Jon Stewart Correctly Warns of Threat to Comedy Being Authoritarianism, Not ‘Woke Police’ in Mark Twain Prize Speech

June 23, 2022
News
jon stewart, mark twain prize, speech

When it was announced that Jon Stewart would be this year’s recipient of The Mark Twain Prize Humor, we said he was the most deserving winner of said award in a very long time.

Jon Stewart, a true icon of modern comedy/political comedy, made good on that notion in his acceptance speech during the annual ceremony held, once more in person, at The Kennedy Center. Stewart weaved plenty of laughs through dedications and thanking the folks honoring him, then reached what the earned-soapbox-moment about comedy not being under threat within the context of cancel culture, but, rather, despots, authoritarians, fascists, etc. that seek to silence and censor any sort of criticism or deviation from their grand vision for their world.

Checking power via comedy with The Daily Show and now, The Problem with Jon Stewart, has been at the core of so much of Stewart’s comedy (even if that power is Arby’s). Again, that’s why he’s the most deserving Mark Twin Prize winner in many, many years.

See all of that for yourself with Jon Stewart’s Mark Twain Prize speech here.

Jon Stewart to Be Latest (and Most Deserving) Recipient of Mark Twain Prize for Humor

January 19, 2022
News
jon stewart, mark twain prize

More often than not, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is simply seen as comedy’s highest honor in the U.S. The award is indeed that distinguished, but don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s just about who are the most renowned people in comedy. Specifically, the Kennedy Center, the organization in charge of the award, details the prize going to “…individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain.”

Even some of the funniest comedians throughout the history of stand-up, sketch, improv, etc. have not necessarily changed the national dialogue or perspective on the zeitgeist. Arguably, nearly all comedians fall short of that mark, which is why The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor is such a rare honor.

That all said, Jon Stewart with just The Daily Show with Jon Stewart alone has more than earned the merit of this distinction as, announced earlier today, he will be the next recipient of the award. On top of that, there is all of his advocacy, activism, and his return to TV with The Problem with Jon Stewart that almost makes you wonder what took so long for The Mark Twain Prize to go to Stewart (maybe because he wasn’t a cast member or writer on SNL?).

Maybe, had he gotten it in, let’s say 2015, he wouldn’t have left TV the year Trump got elected? That’s truly impossible to say, but, at the very least, Stewart is finally getting this incredibly well deserved bust and recognition.

We’re sure Mark Twain would have something to say about a credit card company sponsoring his award and in the same spirit, we hope Jon Stewart will too.

Breaking news: @JonStewart is the next recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor!

Jon Stewart’s New Apple TV Plus Series To Be Called with “The Problem with Jon Stewart”

April 7, 2021
News
apple tv plus, jon stewart

(via THR)

In the years since Jon Stewart’s departure from The Daily Show, the late night world has expanded, gotten way more political, and even more diverse if you can believe it (though Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj not getting renewed and the arrival of Gutfeld! doesn’t help).

Stewart is now on the verge of returning to behind(?) a desk to dive into specific issues in a way that doesn’t seem too dissimilar to former Daily Show colleague John Oliver and his award winning Last Week Tonight.

It is actually interesting that this announcement does come on the heels of the premiere of Fox News’ very own nightly late night talk show this week with their funny(?) pundit, Greg Gutfeld. Stewart’s return doesn’t happen until later this fall, but it’s hard to not see how polarized comedy has become when it comes to being topical. Now, to be fair, we don’t know the how or the what in regards to tone, execution, etc. that will be brought with the cheekily named The Problem with Jon Stewart, especially now that Trump is an ex-president. Stewart remains a much missed voice in the arena of political comedy and late night and one has to wonder what sort of Jon are we going to get.

Is there going to be the Jon that crucified Mad Money’s Jim Cramer and took Arby’s to task on a regular basis or is it going to be the Jon that pleaded for some sanity and peace on Crossfire or is this going to be sort of like when Gandalf returned in white in the Lord of the Rings’ tragedy with a much more sobering demeanor?

Again, like most things with this particularly insane time in human history, we’ll just have to wait and see.

You might have come across the magnificent comedy of James Austin Johnson via one of many spectacular, spot-on, yet absurdly bent Trump impressions, but one ought to know that Johnson has been offering up hysterical flights of absurdist comedy fancy for several years (even some of which was captured on our TCB compilation album). Johnson zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about balancing the forced rest from live comedy due to quarantine, finding his way to being one of the best Trump impressions in all of comedy right now, and maintaining the madcap game show podcast he co-hosts, What Things Are What Things. Also, hot takes on the new Pryor biopic, Cuomo/de Blasio getting sued by small venues, Jon Stewart’s new gig at AppleTV+, and Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm.

Oh, unfortunately, Jake didn’t have hiccups this week because he is recovering quite nicely from his emergency appendectomy.

Jon Stewart to Finally Return to Hosting His Own Topical Show at Apple TV+

October 27, 2020
News
apple tv plus, jon stewart

Jon Stewart handed over the keys to The Daily Show to Trevor Noah in 2015, which many folks found strange considering that’s when Trump was ramping his presidential campaign around then. Stewart took time away from hosting anything or appearing on anything for that matter. There was the occasional cameo on The Late Show with former Daily Show with Jon Stewart correspondent Stephen Colbert, but Stewart has spent the majority of his time with his family, engaging in advocacy for various causes like benefits for first responders, and trying his hand at directing with Rosewater.

Now, at the potential dusk of Trump’s presidency, Jon Stewart is set to return for a brand new series that he will indeed host and EP over at Apple TV+. It’ll be topical, be one hour, and be more broadly focused rather than making fun of cable news as was the nightly mission during his tenure at The Daily Show. Late night and political/topical comedy has vastly grown and changed since Stewart had the reins to his own show, but it will be undoubtedly one of the highest profile returns to TV in recent memory.

As to whether Jon will keep the beard he has maintained since his exit from Comedy Central, that has yet to be announced.

Desus & Mero and Jon Stewart Have a Bit of a Heart to Heart About Doing Late Night Comedy in the Face of Tragedy

News

The first part of this full interview (approximately the first six minutes) with Jon Stewart on Desus & Mero is one of the better, more frank conversations about the purpose and philosophy of comedy when times of strife, tragedy, and horror strike.

As we are beset with all three very acutely every single day of the pandemic, doing a recurring late night talk/satirical news show is as tricky as it has ever been. What can you do to talk about the world and lift spirits? How up would you even be given the the weight of the world already being unbearable, but getting heavier every few hours or so? Stewart and Desus & Mero relate their experiences with The Daily Show and this current time that’s a maelstrom of so many awful things all at once to get to some answers to those questions.

Night of Too Many Stars Is This Saturday (and HBO Made Sure to Redo This Promo Sans Louis C.K.)

hbo, jon stewart, night of too many stars

The big annual TV special Night of Too Many benefiting programs for autism was set to be even bigger as this is the first year that the live event will be broadcast on HBO rather than Comedy Central.

Jon Stewart and a whole boatload of, as the name suggests, too many stars do various bits through the evening in order to raise money. Until last week, one of those guests was Louis C.K., then all the fallout of his sexual misbehavior claims being confirmed happened resulting in C.K. effectively having his career stripped away from him.

So, this promo was actually promptly redone to make sure C.K. was completely severed from the event.

All of that being said, it still has “too many stars” and you should set aside time to watch and support on Saturday, November 18th on HBO at 5PM/8PM PT/ET.

As Jon Stewart has shifted from The Daily Show at Comedy Central to various projects at HBO, the gigantic annual benefit that raises money for organizations servicing autism has also moved to the premium cable network.

This promo with Jon announces that this latest Night of Too Many Stars will happen on Saturday, November 18th. No specific line-up is given, but you can trust, that between Stewart and HBO, this benefit show will live up to its name once more.

A Score and 1 Year Later, Jon Stewart Lines Up His Next Two Stand-Up Specials at HBO

If you listen closely, you can hear the giant sigh of relief from HBO as these are two big time comedy specials that didn’t go to Netflix.

Before his stint in changing comedy, late night, television, and the entertainment landscape in general at The Daily Show, Jon Stewart made his name through doing stand-up comedy. He had specials, his last one being from HBO 21 years ago, under his belt. Being the host and face of The Daily Show for all those year just took time away from him getting up on a mic regularly.

His animated project at HBO didn’t quite work out, but we are more than happy to see a Jon Stewart comedy special or two (or three if you count him hosting another round of Night of Too Many Stars) in the not so distant future.

Jon Stewart and Hannah Storm to Co-Anchor ESPN SportsCenter Coverage of DOD Warrior Games

Comedy and TV legend Jon Stewart has always been in the corner of those who put their life on the line as military servicemen, firefighters, police officers, etc., especially those who have done so and suffered wounds of any kind.

So, co-anchoring The Warrior Games with ESPN mainstay Hannah Storm tomorrow is kind of up his alley.

“The 2017 Department of Defense Warrior Games, a multi-sport event for wounded, injured or ill service personnel and veterans, began June 30 and concludes July 8. Approximately 265 athletes representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), as well as the United Kingdom Armed Forces and the Australian Defence Force are participating.”

Look for Stewart and Storm to cover the event live on a special edition of SportsCenter, Friday, July 7th 4PM PST on ESPN.

Jon Stewart & HBO Agree to Ditch His Digital Animated Series Project for Something Else

Turns out that Jon Stewart was concocting a show where he could, in an animated form, satirize the news on the same day. Pretty cool, huh?

Unfortunately, the news breaks too fast and they couldn’t lock down a workflow that would keep pace with whatever nonsense Trump is causing from hour to hour and both parties have opted to suspend making this project into a reality.

Don’t dismay though. Stewart still has something in the works at HBO that will be announced soon.

Jon Stewart Pops in at Late Show to Give Some Tough Love to the Media Over “Break-Up with Trump”

Apparently, Jon Stewart misses being behind the desk. Thus, he came from underneath the desk and shared some words of wisdom with the media in what he calls a break-up in contrast to the “war” that Bannon paints in regards to Trump and the media.

Luckily, he probably can pop in almost any show of the Daily Show alums.

Also, don’t forget that Jon is supposed to have an animated HBO show coming sometime this year.

Jon Stewart Puts to Rest This Idea That The Daily Show Could Have Determined the Election and Shares a Bit of Hope in America Going Forward as America

Jon Stewart Puts to Rest This Idea That The Daily Show Could Have Determined the Election and Shares a Bit of Hope in America Going Forward as America

“We were the destroyers of men and creators of empires. I think that generally is satire’s role and has always been: the rise and fall of civilization at our whim,” Stewart said facetiously, jokingly adding, “I would have probably allowed Hillary to come a little closer in the Rust Belt, but I still think I would have given Michigan to Trump. I had a little something going on where I was going to give [Al] Gore Florida. There was a bit we had planned that was going to hand Florida to Gore.”

But in all seriousness, Stewart says he doesn’t think satire has that much influence, something he hopes the book [The Daily Show (The Book) An Oral History as Told by Jon Stewart, the Correspondents, Staff and Guests] illustrates.

At a NY Times discussion on the recently released Daily Show oral history, Jon Stewart tried to inject some reality and hope in talking about Trump’s win. Stewart heartily believes that this isn’t the end of America and that it is still the same country with the same people as it was before the election.

Along those lines, Stewart explains, as seen above, that the idea of him staying on as host of The Daily Show wouldn’t have changed the outcome despite some people’s finger-pointing saying otherwise.

Jon also went on to precisely dissect the media coverage, which was always a central focus of his run at The Daily Show, of the election and their obsession with the ratings grabbing headlines and failing to focusing on the actual policy issues.

All of this should inform Jon Stewart’s upcoming animated cable news parody on HBO, which will be more relevant than ever when it premieres.

Trevor Noah Solidifies Voice as Host of The Daily Show in Interview with Tomi Lahren

Last night, Trevor Noah’s interview with outspoken conservative pundit Tomi Lahren showed that Noah can own The Daily Show with his own voice that’s distinctly different from Jon Stewart.

In transitioning from the cultural institution that was The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, many different strategies have been employed in having Trevor Noah take the baton successfully from Stewart.

Accomplishing that has been tricky, to say the least, with the departure of longtime favorites Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver to do their own late night show elsewhere and having much of America meeting Noah for the first time as a host of The Daily Show rather than the insanely popular, globe trotting comedian first.

In an interview that reaches almost 30 minutes, Trevor might have found the groove that will see him through as the host and these upcoming years of the Trump Administration.

It’s not Stewart’s famous takedown of Jim Mad Money Cramer, but that’s not what suits Noah. Instead, poise and calm let him have a rational debate with the fiery Lahren and gave room to pick apart her arguments at his pace with the occasional satirical poke here and there. It’s engaging on Noah’s terms and might be precedent for more counterpoint-type guests for him in the future.

Without too much time passing since Jon Stewart left his post as host of The Daily Show, you can see that his influence on comedy, television, political discourse, satire, and the media as a whole is undeniable.

The oral history captured in The Daily Show (The Book): An Oral History as Told by Jon Stewart, The Correspondents, Staff, and Guests should give you an unprecedented look as to how that happened.

Vulture points out some big takeaways from the book in case you’re not already intrigued from Kilborn’s absence in the book to details on Stewart’s take down of Jim Cramer.

Last night was the final episode of The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore. Unfortunately, that marks far too short of a run for the series, especially in the heat of an election year.

In their final half hour of air time, Jon Stewart paid a visit and offer some beautiful, sincere words of encouragement (including a mention of what David Letterman told him when he faced cancellation). After that, Larry Wilmore explained why the map on their set looks like it’s upside down and detailed the mission statement of The Nightly Show, which should be a goal for the rest of late night going forward.

Jon Stewart’s Digital Animated Series at HBO to Be Parody of Cable News Network and on Track to Premiere Before General Election

If you’ve seen any of Jon Stewart’s recent appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, you can reasonably assume that Jon will be coming back to having his own show with full force.

Also, the fact that he’ll be on HBO and it’ll be animated satirical parody of cable news would make us guess that Jon is definitely not sparing any of his well-channeled, honed, sharpened comedic verve (i.e. business as usual).

This series can’t come soon enough.

If you’ve been pining for Jon Stewart to do what he does best in this election year, pine no more.

Last night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jon took over the desk, albeit in a little more casual attire, and gave us all a beautiful 10 minutes of classic Daily Show with Jon Stewart goodness that picked apart Sean Hannity’s praise of Trump in comparison to Hannity’s criticisms of Obama.

Yes, that includes burns on Arby’s, making fun of the way Trump eats pizza, and a Rant done only the way Stewart can do it.

Please enjoy this gift from Jon Stewart that we can only hope that we get more of soon under his HBO deal.
