Pick of the Day: Hugo Let the Dogs Out! (in LA) 10/6

The midterm elections are just a month away and it’s crucial to be aware of what is at stake (and that you should really vote, maybe even do so early).

With that in mind, one thing you could do leading up to Election Day, Tues. Nov. 8th, 2022 is go to a comedy show fundraiser Hugo Let the Dogs Out! for a choice progressive candidate for LA’s CD13, Hugo Soto-Martinez, at El Cid on Thurs. Oct. 6th with doors opening at 7PM featuring the comedy stylings of some folks you might have heard of including Joe Mande, Demetri Martin, Gareth Reynolds, Will Menaker, Matt Christman, Andrew Michaan, Megan Koester, and Derek & Dril along with hosts Amber Rollo and Josh Androsky.

You don’t have to pay to enjoy such a spoil of comedy riches (note that El Cid has a 2 item min.), but they’ll obviously be taking donations for Hugo’s campaign. If you can’t make the show, you can donate to Hugo at hugo2022.com.

Pick of the Day: Performance Anxiety (in LA) 4/26

LA has had a penchant for doing comedy shows in odd places for decades, long before any sort of pandemic reached the county line.

One of those spots was the famed adult toy store, The Pleasure Chest, that featured the bi-weekly delight known as Performance Anxiety, hosted by Eli Olsberg. The last Performance Anxiety that was on the books was on Mar. 10, 2020 and it has been so long since that time that we forgot to see if it might even come back or if there would ever be anything to happen live and in person back at The Pleasure Chest.

Thankfully, it’s another thing that is confidently coming back to this side of the pandemic on Tues. Apr. 26th at 8PM PT (with the same nice price that they had in 2020, $7) and the same sort of fantastic line-up of comics surrounded by a bunch of sex toys and accessories.

This very first post-lockdown Performance Anxiety will feature the likes of Adam Conover, Joe Mande, River Butcher, Blair Socci, Hampton Yount, Dana Donnelly, and Subhah Agarwal.

Go get your tickets right now right here for one of the kinkier comedy shows that you’ll ever go to.

Pick of the Day: Nick and Andrew’s Hellscape 6/25

Jam in a Van has been going for a minute in providing a unique outdoor comedy experience in a secret West LA location. On top of a DIY built, outdoor space, your ticket gets you and your party your own cooler of tasty refreshments (as opposed to waiting around to order two drinks).

Several different shows have come through and come through again in their space, but Nick and Andrew’s Hellscape, set for Fri. Jun. 25th, has one hell of a stacked line-up that could very well be a festival line-up if there were any big festivals happening this month. Chelsea Peretti, Ron Funches, Joe Mande, Hannah Einbinder, Atsuko Okatsuka, Kate Berlant, and hosts Nick Thune and Andrew Michaan are splitting an early show 7PM PT and a late show 9:30PM PT (not everyone will play both shows).

You really ought to not miss this show or, really, both shows if you can swing it. Ticket prices are as follows:

Regular Reserved: $35 (plus $2.50 handling fee)
($75 per pair).
VIP Premium seating and a Mr. Heater heater at your seat: $50 (plus $2.50 handling fee) ($105 per pair).

Go get your tickets as space is very limited for Jam in a Van here.

Pick of the Day: The Comedy Roof 6/2

If you’ve followed for us any of our 10 year and a half run, you very likely know and enjoy LA comedy’s penchant and expertise for doing comedy outdoors. Having had years of comedy taking advantage of the postcard quality weather that we’re privileged to have in LA, doing comedy outdoors due to the pandemic wasn’t such a huge sweat around here.
Shows such as The Comedy Roof popped up on the roof of the parking garage next to Grand Central Market in DTLA to keep this facet of the scene going. Also, they observed as much COVID-19 protocols as they could (including mask policy, very socially distant tables/chairs, separate entrances and exits, etc.). On top of that, you literally get a pretty gorgeous view of DTLA’s skyline.
So, The Comedy Roof folks are back at it with their latest show coming this Wed. Jun. 2nd at 8PM PT (Doors 7:30PM PT) with a stacked line-up of:
Joe Mande (Comedy Cental, NBC)
Brian Simpson (Comedy Central, BS with Brian Simpson)
Nick Skardarasy (CollegeHumor, The A.V. Club)
Jenny Jennings (ROM-COMedians)
Ahmed Al-Kadri
+ Jeff Buck, Vee Bentley, Kate Mason, & Mikel Albagdadi
Tickets are only $15 and you can (and very much should before they sell out) get them here.

It’s best to get your tickets for Let’s Save the Future now (they’re going for $40-$100) right now. Go get them here.

Joe Mande and Super Deluxe Are Developing a Joanne the Scammer TV Show

Branden Miller, better known as Joanne The Scammer, has made quite the ruckus with the marvelously infamous character online and will now, apparently, be getting a chance to possibly do a TV show.

Miller won’t be alone in trying to have a Joanne The Scammer TV series though as the very accomplished TV writer/comedian Joe Mande and the creative team at Super Deluxe are on board, helping shape the project before it makes the rounds to potentially get bought up.

In the meantime, you can go down a rabbit hole where this all might have started on Joanne the Scammer’s Instagram here.

Joe Mande’s 1st Hour Special “Joe Mande’s Award-Winning Comedy Special” Is Now Streaming

Just for the fact that Joe Mande called his first hour special “Joe Mande’s Award-Winning Comedy Special” should be enough to at least tug at your curiosity to give it a watch.

A la The Secret, Mande not only named this special with the hopes of it winning awards, but also weaved a silly, meta narrative thread through the hour that makes you wonder if Joe can really “moneyball” a comedy special. That includes surprise cameos from Bo Burnham, Blake Griffin, and George Wallace.

Also, the entrepreneurial pitches and Mande’s own personal crisis over free speech are bits that stand alone separate from the “award-winning” framework.

With all of that said, you can now go stream Joe Mande’s Award Winning Comedy Special at Netflix.

If you buy into The Secret, maybe it would be a good idea to call your yet-to-be-released-or-even-submitted-for-awards-consideration special an “award winning special” and project what you might think critics will say about it.

Whether that’s the reason behind it or not, that is what Joe Mande is doing with his special and the accompanying trailer.

See for yourself here, then look for Joe Mande’s Award-Winning Comedy Special to start streaming on Tuesday, July 25th.

Both Joe Mande and Rory Scovel are two great comedians of this current golden age of comedy that are deserving of their upcoming Netflix comedy specials that arrive this month and next.

Also, we just love the juxtaposition of the titles of their specials and how much of a goofy range it covers.

Oh, in case it wasn’t clear, mark these dates down as Joe and Rory’s new hour will definitely be worth watching.

One of the most revered weekly stand-up shows in the country, The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, ended its 6 year run last month, which included three seasons as a TV series on Comedy Central.

Naturally, the 8:30PM slot at Nerdmelt where Meltdown took place was going to be filled in by something given Meltdown’s status as a flagship show at the theater.

In two weeks, you will all have a very exciting and worthy show filling in with Rabbit Hole with Jay Larson and Rory Scovel produced by Nerdmelt’s Caitlin Durante. Larson and Scovel are two of our favorites and this show will be in good hands as you can see with our thoughts on Jay’s recent album Human Math and Scovel’s latest Conan set.

In the inaugural show, Kate Berlant, Todd Glass, Bridey Elliott, Joe Mande, Baron Vaughn, and a surprise guest will be performing. It should go without saying that it’ll be a hell of a show and something that will get us all through the next few years and beyond.

Tickets are $10 and are available now here.

You can keep up with Rabbit Hole on @therabbitholela on Twitter, @therabbitholela on Instagram, and on Facebook.

Whether or not this launches, Mande continues to game the Internet and we love it.
