If You Haven’t Already, Watch Ziwe’s Iconic Interview with Chet Hanks

May 16, 2022
News
Chet Hanks, iconic, interview, showtime, ziwe

Season 2 of Ziwe has commenced on Showtime and, already, they’ve might have shown the most iconic interview of the season with Tom Hanks’ offspring, Chet Hanks.

For all of those who got on board with Ziwe during her IG Live days, Chet Hanks does more than enough by being himself to be the sort of perfect, truly, deeply iconic guest on Ziwe (i.e. he says some of the most unhinged things while fully acknowledging his privilege of being Tom Hanks’ son). Ziwe barely has to do any “baiting” with diving incisive questioning on complicated and nuanced topics since Chet does things like not knowing Patois vocabulary while claiming to make Patois going mainstream in the States.

You, like Ziwe herself, will very likely be left speechless.

Give it a watch here, then go catch up with the rest of the season that has aired on Showtime Anytime.

Pick of the Day: American Cinematheque: A Virtual Conversation with Sacha Baron Cohen and Eric Idle 2/17

February 5, 2021
News
american cinematheque, eric idle, in conversation, interview, sacha baron cohen

When it comes to character comedy, Sacha Baron Cohen stands tall, both literally and figuratively, above so many others for his daring and commitment as Borat and Ali G in service of comedy and satire. Eric Idle remains a living legend as part of one of the most lauded comedy troupes of all time, Monty Python.

You’d very likely pay good money to see either of them do a Q&A, virtually or in-person. Lucky for you, American Cinematheque is hosting a special virtual conversation between Cohen and Idle this month where the two will dive into their work. Truly, it ought to be illuminating to see both just as themselves talking shop.

This virtual conversation is set for Wed. Feb. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets for livestream access are FREE, but be sure to RSVP here.

Please Enjoy Nikki Glaser and Conan O’Brien’s 1/2 Hour Interview

Whenever Nikki Glaser has been the guest on Conan, there’s a conversational spark and an effortless weaving in and out of bits, stories, riffing. It’s all of those elements that comprise what late night talk show interviews are supposed to be.

Glaser and Conan O’Brien’s dynamic is so great that, even while Zooming in quarantine for their interview, they went just over a half hour and maintained the same sort of zip that they have had in studio for years. It’s effectively longer than many half hour stand-up specials.

Please enjoy Nikki and Conan’s full interview here from last night’s Conan at Home.

As if a chat between Desus & Mero with celebrated journalist and author Malcolm Gladwell wasn’t enough for you to satisfy you, the wonderful artists over at Cartuna put the icing on the cake by animating the interview.

In the animated world, they really play up the contrast of Gladwell in Desus & Mero’s world and also lets you imagine a current day conversation that doesn’t require social distancing. Enjoy it here.

Please Enjoy This Amazing (and Historic) Interview of David Letterman on Desus & Mero

Looks Desus & Mero have both just received a torch of sorts from late night legend David Letterman.

Nearly 26 years ago, David Letterman made an appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, a show that was being kept on an incredibly short leash at the time even though Letterman’s name followed “Late Night with” not even a year earlier. What transpired between Conan and Dave that night was the closest thing we’ve seen to a legitimate blessing from late night host to the other, generation to generation, class to class as well as a killer interview. Conan O’Brien is forever thankful to Dave for the appearance as you can see decades later on Conan here.

Last night, on the season 2 premiere (on Showtime) of Desus & Mero, an even more distinguished and stately David Letterman graced the studio where Desus Nice and The Kid Mero riff up a storm of jokes, bits, runs, etc. that make some of the most exciting things in late night in recent memory. Not only is the interview pretty fantastic (the Tarantino vs. Dave story alone is worth watching), but Letterman again gives his blessing (even much more explicitly this time around than with Conan) to Desus & Mero.

If anyone is making a timeline of late night history, please put a pin right here that might signify where late night is headed (Dave also voices this opinion FYI).

With all of that said, please enjoy the full half-hour-plus interview of David Letterman on Desus & Mero here.

Steve Martin Has a Grand Old Time Running Bits with Stephen Colbert (and Giving a Little More Info on His True Crime Comedy Series with Martin Short)

interview, stephen colbert, steve martin

It should come as no surprise that comedy greats Steve Martin and Stephen Colbert being in the same room together on last night’s Late Show would spark plenty of bits, jabs, riffs, etc. (as well as genuine moment remembering Terry Jones) that harkens back to a great classic late night interview. From start to finish, Martin and Colbert had hijinks planned (or inspired in the moment) and it’s kind of what you would hope for with a Steve Martin appearance on The Late Show.

Also, Steve Martin really does have an upcoming Hulu series with Martin Short where they investigate murders, but only in the building they live in called Only Murders in the Building. He gives a little more insight what very well could be a delightful cross between My Favorite Murder and Too Much Tuna/Oh, Hello.

Corporate is unquestionably one of our favorite shows right now for how dark, weird, and existentially funny it all is.

That energy and vibe definitely carries through in this panel interview on Friday’s Colbert with Matt and Jake (especially including Matt’s hair). Watch and enjoy it here.

When it comes to pushing the envelope in comedy (and doing so successfully), the name Conner O’Malley is one of the names that should immediately come to mind (just check his YouTube channel if you need proof).

UCB’s interview series about comedians and their craft, So, you do comedy? with Chris Witaske, has Conner as its next guest and you just might learn what’s cooking up in that head of his.

The show will be at UCB Sunset on Thurs., July 26th at 8:30PM. Tickets are $7 and you should go grab them here.

Like Trevor Noah says in this interview, Tiffany Haddish is the human equivalent of a sun shining light to us all.

She shares some stories with Noah that are all written down (and spoken in audiobook form) in her new book The Last Black Unicorn, which you can (and should) get here.

As you can clearly see (as well as hear on her episode of The Crabfeast), it’ll be one hell of a book.

It’s appearances like these that make us think Nikki Glaser won’t wait to long before she gets another TV show of her own if she chooses to go down that road a third time.

One interesting thing to note…

We’re not sure if you know this or not, but, often times, when stand-up comedians go on a late night show and sit to do a panel interview, they’re still “doing a set”, but doing so in the clever disguise of an actual conversation/interview.

Nikki Glaser, who has done plenty of wonderful, traditional late night stand-up sets, give a great example of how one weaves a set list of jokes through an actual conversation on Conan.

See for yourself here and here.

Colbert’s Anthony Scaramucci Interview Has Stephen Chasing a Mooch That’s Trying to Avoid Another Misfire

Uncategorized
anthony scaramucci, interview, late show, stephen colbert, trump

Whatever you take away from this, Stephen Colbert’s interview of Anthony Scaramucci is and will be a milestone in Colbert’s tenure at The Late Show.

It’s intriguing that Scaramucci picked Colbert, who has taken the lead in ratings in late night most likely for being outspoken against the Trump Administration and, on top of that, is a particularly sharp and prickly interviewer when he wants to be.

As you might expect, Scaramucci makes a concerted effort to not say the sorts of things that probably got him dismissed from his White House Communications Director gig in record time. Still, in awkwardly avoiding a mishap while Colbert probed his experience at The White House, you almost get the feeling your watching Veep (current showrunner David Mandel has commented how “Trump is doing us.”). Could we call this “gonzo comedy”?

So, without further adieu, watch Colbert interview Anthony Scaramucci here and here.

The Hollywood Reporter always does a great job with these big roundtable discussions and this go around is no different.

They did probably more than an hour of discussion that was only slightly cut down between Kathryn Hahn, Issa Rae, Pamela Adlon, Emmy Rossum, Minnie Driver, and America Ferrera, for the comedy actresses, and William H. Macy, Kumail Nanjiani, Anthony Anderson, Ted Danson, Kevin Bacon, and Brian Tyree Henry, for the comedy actors.

It’s fascinating conversation that spans the current deconstruction of inherent expectations within female roles all the way to Kevin Bacon’s feeling on Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Late Night with Seth Meyers represents a pretty traditional version of a late night talk show whereas Desus & Mero on Viceland throw out nearly every late night talk show convention that you could think of right out the window.

This week, the old and the new crossed path as Desus Nice and The Kid Mero came on Late Night as guests and talked shop about how much nicer Meyers’ set is, etc.

Two Years Later, ‘The Interview’ Remains Google Play’s Highest Selling Movie Ever

If there was no Sony Hack, we have a feeling that this headline above would have probably not happened. Having seen it, we think it the satire could have reached higher with its aims of poking fun at the North Korean regime. 52% at Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic would suggest a similar feeling from critics.

The Interview streamed on Netflix for two years and still made top sales, which suggests to us that many folks bought The Interview as a political act.

At some point, someone will make another North Korean satire (especially if the recent defector is right about the reach of outside information making its way inside North Korea). If it’s someone on the level of Armando Iannucci or Iannucci himself, we can barely imagine what that situation will be like.

John Oliver doesn’t have big guest interviews every week (or even some weeks) on Last Week Tonight. However, the interview with the Dalai Lama from last night’s episode shows how good an interviewer Oliver can be while balancing his angles of comedy and geo-socio-political awareness.

While this is on a comedy show, we wouldn’t be surprise if this interview at the latter half of this deep dive segment becomes one of the more highly referenced clips of the Dalai Lama in covering the tension between the Chinese government and Tibet.

Norm MacDonald Crams Himself Into an Old Porsche for Latest Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee

Jerry Seinfeld really has a knack, as Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee has shown, for getting big time comedians to reveal facets of their true selves while going on a luxurious day about whatever town Jerry’s in for that episode.

In the latest episode, Norm MacDonald shows pretty much all the facets of himself, from being subtle in his goofiness to razor sharp in his observations, when sitting down with Seinfeld for coffee.

Somehow, as Jerry even points out, there is something very appropriate about hanging with Norm in a rusty old car in the rain and it is, indeed, kind of perfect.

Samantha Bee Sits Down with Glenn Beck While Wearing Festive Holiday Sweaters

Believe it or not, the idea that we need to talk to each other more in America is happening, albeit under strange, Twilight Zone-ish circumstances with the impending Trump administration only a few weeks away.

Trevor Noah reached out to political pundit and Trump advocate Tomi Lahren and had a civil discourse on The Daily Show. On last night’s Full Frontal, Samantha Bee reached out in a somewhat similar spirit to the one and only Glenn Beck.

You can see Beck as an anthesis to Bee, but it just so happens that they have come together against Trump.

That makes for this weird, funny interview between the two, which will undoubtedly be happening more often between satirical news show hosts and guests that have opposing views.
