Beware of Your Company’s All Expenses Paid Work Retreat to Italy in “Spin Me Round” Trailer

July 14, 2022
News
alessandro nivola, alison brie, ayden mayeri, ifc, jeff baena, molly shannon, tim heidecker, zach woods

Just like the rest of the world, everything seems too good to be true in what should be a very run-of-the-mill corporate work retreat to Italy in Spin Me Round.

Spin Me Round is the latest work from Jeff Baena has had carved out a niche for very, very off-beat indie comedies including The Little Hours and Life After Beth. This jaunt follows Alison Brie on what seems to be a very special work program for some fast casual chain like The Olive Garden. She’s looking for a change, inspiration, and some romance, but gets entangled into much more than she ever thought she would. With a supporting cast that includes the likes of Molly Shannon and Zach Woods and a more sneaky than usual Aubrey Plaza, there’s something alluring here in Spin Me Round to the cracks in the veneer of an Italian getaway.

See for yourself in the first trailer here, then look for it in theaters and on AMC+ starting Aug. 19th.

“The Nowhere Inn” Is a Trippy Meditation on the Nature of Fame (That Also Happens to Be a Satirical Comedy Too)

September 15, 2021
News

It must have been much of your experience over the last year and a half to take in a gargantuan amount of TV and movies; very likely more than you’ve ever watched in any other time in your life. With binge watching of content at an all time high, you’re likely to note the repetitive and homogenous nature of it all. There are slight tweaks hear and there, some new talent you’ve never seen before and some of your old stand-bys try something new.

Certainly, very little of it jolted us out of the dynamic of just watching something because it was on and new.

The extremely trippy, meta rock mockumentary, The Nowhere Inn, from writers Carrie Brownstein and Annie Clark AKA St. Vincent and director Bill Benz is a much needed, refreshing, starkly funny departure from so much of, well, everything else out there. It’s already a bold concept to have a fictional documentary/satire about making a documentary of art rock phenom St. Vincent on tour going off the rails of the here and now and into several layers of the subconscious and unconscious. It takes on the nature of fame/rock stardom in such a surreal fashion that really makes you reexamine why they are so desired (or that being the narrative we’ve been subjected to with hours and hours and box sets upon box sets of rock docs and live concert specials).

Throughout that particular journey, The Nowhere Inn jumps, breaks, stretches genre tropes, and expectations in bolder and bolder ways that one might wonder where the film is taking us and, just as important, where we were just a few moments ago. That may be some deep water to dive into, but trust that Brownstein’s presence here makes sure there’s enough Portlandia-esque subversion to keep a fascinating narrative thread going.

In fact, The Nowhere Inn seems to be on a mission to subvert the whole idea of performatively pondering the difference between art and artist and the fame cloaking it all, especially if you just simply love the art that they make for us all.

We couldn’t help but keep thinking of This Is Spinal Tap throughout watching Clark and Brownstein’s attempt at making a very curated, hip behind-the-scenes tour documentary go awry. Famously, Spinal Tap saw a hair metal band let their egos hysterically get the best of them in a faux documentary format and The Nowhere Inn carries that torch, but opts to go to the outer limits with it. There’s more than a few passages in the film that are very much are a lucid dream that’s starting to unravel (before you get thrust back into some sort of reality).

Both Clark and Brownstein take really take huge swings in being something unto itself and wholly and enthrallingly unique and absurdly funny in the process even as they’re literally and figuratively winking at their own fictional selves winking at the camera.

The Nowhere Inn hits theaters and VOD this Fri. Sept. 17th.

Get Your First Look at Baroness Von Sketch’s Fifth Season at IFC

Aurora Browne, baroness von sketch, Carolyn Taylor, ifc, jennifer whalen, Meredith MacNeill, season 5, trailer

Though Portlandia was pretty much the face of IFC for its eight season run, the cable network has also been growing another sketch series, the Canadian born-and-bred Baroness Von Sketch, for quite some time now. It’ll be premiering its fifth season next month, specifically on Wed. Oct. 14th on IFC and has effectively taken the torch from Portlandia in heading up IFC’s branding of clever, forward thinking sketch comedy.

Carolyn Taylor, Meredith MacNeill, Aurora Browne, and Jennifer Whalen make up Baroness Von Sketch and really do keep the fire alive for sketch comedy over at IFC over their past four seasons.

From the looks of this trailer, they do really look to offer up their best season yet.

IFC Renews Sherman’s Showcase for Season 2 & Black History Month Spectacular Premieres Tonight

IFC’s variety sketch series Sherman’s Showcase from Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin not only got a renewal for a second season this week at its network IFC, but got the season pick-up right before the premiere of their Black History Month Spectacular special tonight at 10PM on AMC. Sherman’s Showcase has a hell of time jumping around history with all sorts of sketches under the guise of a classic musical variety show.

This bodes well for the inclusivity and amplifying of BIPOC voices that Hollywood says that they’re going to do going forward, especially following the unfortunate cancellation of another black sketch series Astronomy Club at Netflix after one season.

The second season of Sherman’s Showcase is set to come in 2021 (though any sort of release date is tentative at this point in the pandemic) and will air on both IFC and AMC. For now, you can and should enjoy Sherman’s Showcase’s Black History Month Spectacular tonight on this Juneteenth.

For All of April, IFC Will Be Streaming MST3K, Baroness Von Sketch Show, Birthday Boys, and More for Free

More networks are being a little more gracious with their content in this time of need, especially to those that do not have a subscription in order to watch exclusive shows. IFC, along with AMC, BBC America, and SundanceTV, are the latest networks to offer many hours of their original programming in front of a pay wall for everyone to stream and enjoy.

Specifically, IFC will be giving us all access to “…Baroness von Sketch Show, Birthday Boys, Spoils of Babylon, Spoils Before Dying, Bunk, Food Party, as well as select episodes from Comedy Bang Bang and Mystery Science Theatre 3000,” throughout all of April. There certainly is high brow silliness to revel in with this offering including old episodes of MST3K, but, for those who missed out, please go and enjoy Kurt Braunohler’s wild, completely faux game show, Bunk, that managed to work in Braunohler’s absurdist sensibilities to every inch of a game show format.

Get into all of these free IFC treats for this month right now over at IFC.com.

Greener Grass Is the Movie 2019 Needs Right Now

Greener Grass, the debut feature film of comedy duo Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe is a very, very, very refreshing break from almost every norm imaginable. Arguably, amidst a never-ending conveyor belt of film adaptations and sequels, this hysterical, pastel-saturated fever dream is the film, we feel, that we need right now.

Every inch and every second of Greener Grass, from the color palate, to the shot selection, the pacing, rhythm, perfect crack-in-the-veer performances from the entire cast, and the plethora of golf carts seems so carefully orchestrated, yet done with a rebellious abandon that we happen to really dig.

We could go on and on with the echoes of David Lynch, Todd Solondz, and so many more influences, but Greener Grass achieves it own offbeat identity that is so charmingly weird, even in its most absurd and tragic moments.

So, go see Greener Grass wherever you can (and push for it to play in wider release if you can).

Please Enjoy the Beautiful Weirdness in the “Greener Grass” Trailer

The equations in which you could try to make a comparison for Greener Grass are endless thanks to it bright and joyful color palate, unflinchingly bizarre world, and the characters that take said bizarre world as is. It’s so wild and out there that you’re trying to make any sense of what demented wonder lies in store when Greener Grass hits theaters (that’ll be on Oct. 18th FYI).

For us, it’s somewhere between a John Waters movie and an episode of Arrested Development, done up in the world of At Home with Amy Sedaris (with healthy sprinkling of magical realism thrown in).

This feature debut from Dawn Luebbe and Jocelyn DeBoer really does like a doozy and we can’t wait to visit their world of Greener Grass.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for Greener Grass in theater on Oct. 18th.

Watch Trailer for IFC’s New Docu-Series Parody/Sketch Show “Sherman’s Showcase”

When it comes to hyper specific angles in sketch comedy, IFC really wants to dominate that segment of comedy. Portlandia and Documentary Now! already did a comedic interpretation of Portland and famous documentary films respectively.

Now, IFC has their latest offering along these lines with Sherman’s Showcase from Diallo Riddle and Bashir Salahuddin, a satirical take on a fictional music variety show that bares a striking resemblance to legendary music-dance show, Soul Train. It’s being billed as a sketch comedy, which leads us to believe they’ll step outside of being solely a Soul Train parody.

In a weird way, this seems almost seems akin to all those Charlie Murphy stories on Chappelle’s Show and, as a matter of fact, there is someone playing Prince or a Prince-like character here. We’ll have to wait until Jul. 31st to see how that all plays out.

For now, just enjoy all of this in the Sherman’s Showcase trailer.

IFC Adds Almost Asian, Annika Erotica, Art Thieves, Beth, and The Middle Passage to Development Slate

IFC Adds Almost Asian, Annika Erotica, Art Thieves, Beth, and The Middle Passage to Development Slate

Respectively, IFC’s new additions to their development slate include a semi-autobiographical series about being a mixed race asian millennial from Katie Malia and Margaret Cho, a priest writing erotica under a pen name from FoD, an art heist comedy, an comedy about agoraphobia from Timm Sharp and Jonathan Ames, and a socio-political long form sketch comedy show focusing on the racial divide in the United States.

This all sounds very, very intriguing, especially as IFC is figuring out what to do with the face of their comedy brand once Portlandia ends. So, we hope we’ll get to see how any of this will look, sound, or feel in the not so distant future and get an idea of what IFC’s comedy will be like going onwards into the next decade.

We wouldn’t be surprised at all if Amram pulls off an EGOT employing similar tactics for the Oscars, Tonys, and Grammys.

As a comedy horror series, Stan Against Evil is already at certain level of funhouse chaos, especially having had two seasons under its belt.

From the looks of this season 3 teaser unveiled at Comic-Con, they’re raising their own bar on how bonkers they want to get including sentient puppets and their own version of Mulder and Scully. We’re on board for all of that and more.

See for yourself here, then look for the season premiere on Halloween on IFC.

While Get Out took top honors of Best Feature and Best Director at this year’s Spirit Awards, seemingly every other award went towards comedy as you can see below:

BEST FEMALE LEAD – Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST SUPPORTING FEMALE – Allison Janney, I, Tonya
BEST SUPPORTING MALE – Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST SCREENPLAY – Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
BEST EDITING – Tatiana S. Riegel, I, Tonya
BEST FIRST FEATURE – Ingrid Goes West (Director: Matt Spicer, Producers: Jared Ian Goldman, Adam Mirels, Robert Mirels, Aubrey Plaza, Tim White, Trevor White)
BEST FIRST SCREENPLAY – Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani, The Big Sick

Hopefully, that’s a good omen for the Oscar results later tonight.

Get the full list of 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards Winners here.

Also, John Mulaney and Nick Kroll served up another sharp awards show monologue that was fun and loose, but also game to go a little dark or blue. Watch it here.

One last thing to notice: We’re pretty sure Timothy Chalemet had Armie Hammer who was on a beard shirtless on Facetime (as Hammer was not present at the ceremony). It definitely sweetened the Call Me By Your Name chunk of the monologue.

It just might like yesterday that you were joking about putting a bird on it, but Portlandia has had one hell of a run as a sketch comedy show on IFC.

Most TV shows, especially sketch shows, don’t make it this far. Keep that in mind along with the surprising, but delightful pairing of Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen as the final season kicks off tonight at 10PM tonight on IFC.

The 8th and final season of Portlandia is set to arrive on Thursday, January 18th at 10PM on IFC, which we’re sure you’re making a reminder of right now.

In preparation of that, they released a whole sketch rather than a teaser or a trailer that’s as timely as can be as the trail of men brought down by their history of sexual harassment moves forward every single day. They do it in their own quirky Portlandia way of course.

See for yourself here.

IFC Reveals 11 Shows in Their 2018 Development Slate

With Portlandia coming to a close relatively soon, IFC casted a wide net to find their next scripted hit.

Nearly all these shows are high concept and include such intriguing elements as a “botched cyborg”, a kill list, a struggling dominatrix, West African charities that have gotten out of hand, and rigging an election.

Attached to these projects are the talents of Gabe Delahaye, Josh Ruben, Emily Flake, Elna Baker, Jocelyn DeBoer/Dawn Luebbe, Matteo Lane, and more.

Some of these shows have script orders while others are just incubating in IFC’s Comedy Crib initiative. In any case, IFC has a lot on their plate, especially for a cable network.

With all of this in mind, don’t be surprised if you see a much different looking IFC with a bunch of new shows in the next year or two.
