John Oliver and The “Last Week Tonight” Team Update Us on LGBT Discrimination in the U.S.

August 24, 2015

Now that the bans on gay marriage have been overturned nationwide, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver turned their focus to the other bastions of discrimination that the keep the LGBT people of the country from having their full fledged civil rights.

The more that Oliver and his team keep this sort of thing up, the more likely that there could be some sort of class in high school or college where someone just turns on episodes of Last Week Tonight and the class just watches it.

Watch the segment here.

We could elaborate as to what Tig Notaro chatted about with Conan O’Brien last night during her appearance on Conan in order to entice you to watch their chat.

However, we know that you’re going to watch it anyway since it’s kind of Tig Notaro’s moment right now.

However, we will say that this road trip story is, as Tig will tell you, pretty hilarious.

The special Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted premieres on HBO on Aug. 22nd.

To get the word out, Tig not only has a giant billboard on the side of a tall building, she also made sure to stand near it, so she could point it to anyone walking, running, or driving by.

If you get a chance to point out your own billboard, it looks like you should absolutely do it.

In Taking Down Televangelists on “Last Week Tonight”, John Oliver Starts His Own Religion, ‘Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption’

As Stephen Colbert once showed how unregulated political action committees can be in raising money for their own agenda with the Colbert Super PAC, John Oliver is now showing how unregulated televangelists are with raising money with vague promises of spiritual fulfillment that ultimately end up serving their own agenda.

In his main segment on Last Week Tonight, Oliver ran down the abuses of such televangelists, similar to the sale of indulgences by corrupt church officials hundreds of years ago, that are given so many passes by the IRS for tax-free money often used to buy jets.

After that, Oliver announced the creation of his own church, Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption, which he has made sure, through plenty of legal counsel, is legally a religion.

You can actually donate to Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption by sending money in the mail to:

Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption
P.O. Box 1954
New York, New York 10113

In the televangelist spirit, you can call 1-800-844-7475 to hear a “nice” message where Oliver asks again for money.

This is your first glimpse at, as we’ve said before because of the accolades for Inside Amy Schumer and Trainwreck and various interviews, what might be one of the most highly anticipated stand-up specials of the year.

You can then watch its premiere on Oct. 17th at 10PM on HBO.

Judd Apatow To Produce Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s HBO Anthology Series

Though still largely under wraps, the series that Jemaine and Taika have been working on seems to be coming together.

Similar to the way American Horror Story uses the same cast for different stories, the episodes of this series from Clement and Waititi will use the same cast for stories ranging from time travel to dance contests.

The addition of Apatow should mean that this project is picking up steam and hopefully that will bring the series to the screen relatively soon.

The full trailer for Ferrell Takes The Field shows Will Ferrell grace the diamond in all 10 different uniforms while delivering a Ferrell-style speech at a real MLB spring training game rather than in a sports movie. You’ll notice, as Letterman noted earlier this year, Will does look pretty slick in a MLB uniform.

Watch the trailer here, then look for the premiere on Sept. 12th at 10PM on HBO.

It probably isn’t the whole reason, but it almost seems like HBO might have partially waited to order season 2 for wordplay.

HBO has opted to go for a second season of the geopolitical crisis comedy “The Brink” with Jack Black and Tim Robbins. Unfortunately, one of the series’ executive producer Jerry Weintraub passed away recently and was unable to share in the good news.

The order comes just in the nick of time before the attached stars had the option to go for other projects.

Perhaps, Jack Black’s plea while on Conan worked?

This year is quickly becoming a banner year for Tig Notaro as the documentary following her now legendary set, “Tig”, was just released this past weekend on Netflix and her Showtime special with Jon Dore, “Knock Knock, It’s Tig Notaro” premiered earlier this year.

On top of all of that, she has her HBO comedy special “Boyish Girl Interrupted” premiering on Aug. 22nd at 10PM.

This weekend, they had 7 Days in Hell with Andy Samberg and Kit Harrington and in a couple months, they’ll have their very next comedy sports special, Ferrell Takes the Field.

Earlier this year, Will Ferrell played 10 positions on 10 different teams over the course of one day of MLB Spring Training and from the looks of this teaser, it has all the promise of a 47 year old Ferrell mixing it up in the big leagues.

Look for Ferrell Takes the Field’s premiere on Sept. 12th at 10PM on HBO.

While you’re looking forward to perhaps getting a Will Ferrell baseball card, you can also look forward to an entire special of Will Ferrell playing as many positions on as many MLB teams as he can during MLB Spring Training.

“Ferrell Takes The Field” will premiere on HBO Sat. Sept. 12th at 10PM and will be the second in line of comedy sports specials at the premium cable network.

If 7 Days in Hell goes well in July and Ferrell Takes The Field does the same in September, maybe HBO will do a parody of all those boxing docu-series that they do?

Greg Daniels, the man behind the U.S. version of The Office, is on to his latest project which seems like it will center on the same sort of day-to-day and romantic tensions that Daniels has beautifully orchestrated in the past, but will now be set up in the sci-fi genre over at HBO.

There is no word on talent being attached or more details on the premise, but perhaps, if this gets picked up we’ll all have something to follow up Other Space with.

The Duplass Brothers Now Have a Four Picture Deal at Netflix and an Overall Deal at HBO

Coming from a 7 minute short that followed a man trying desperately to record his outgoing voicemail they made over a decade ago, The Duplass Brothers are now real Hollywood power brokers.

Earlier this year, The Duplass Brothers scored a four picture deal over at Netflix, which was both new and exciting territory for Netflix as well as Mark and Jay.

Now that the duo have succeeded with their series Togetherness and the upcoming Animals at HBO, HBO has gone in for a two-year overall deal for Mark and Jay Duplass to develop and produce more original series.

Between making their own TV series and movies then starring in others, they’re solidifying an indie empire of sorts.

Clueless Gamer has just marked its very first multiplayer episode with a 3-on-3 showdown with Halo 5: Guardians.

Conan O’Brien enlisted the help of Aaron Bleyaert and Andy Richter to take on Thomas Middleditch, TJ Miller, and Zach Woods from Silicon Valley.

The results of the battle are all the trash talking, skill disparity based on generational differences, and bribing that you’d want from a Clueless Gamer battle.

HBO Orders Two Seasons of Animated Comedy Series “Animals” From Phil Matarese, Mike Luciano, and The Duplass Brothers

Props to HBO for decisiveness.

Both The Duplass Brothers and HBO are expanding their comedic scope by going two seasons in on an animated comedy series created by Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano. Apparently, it’s good enough to warrant the entire first season being picked up by HBO as well as the order for a second one all in one feel swoop.

As Animals follows NYC based animals and is targeted at adults, we’re curious how many animal jokes they’ll be firing off as compared to BoJack Horseman.

Nick Kroll, Katie Aselton, and Mark Duplass are all set to voice various animals.

We hope this is a hit not only to have a good show, but to encourage networks to give bigger season orders to new shows or have faith in new shows at all.

HBO Orders a Pilot of “The Gorburger Show”

Your favorite blue demon talk show host is back and possibly better than ever as they might be on HBO.

One of the gems on TJ Miller’s resume that probably doesn’t get enough shine is The Gorburger Show where he played a blue demon that looks like it fresh out of Big Trouble in Little China and switched off between terrifying employees of the studio he invaded and chatting with a musicians. Somehow, it’s less absurdist than The Eric Andre Show.

Now, HBO has ordered a pilot where Miller gets to return as Gorburger and will talk to the likes of Ed Helms and Johnny Knoxville and get to do even more crazy segments that blur the line between Miller’s genuine curiosity and the bloodlust of Gorburger.

Keep your fingers crossed that HBO gets more into the TJ Miller business.

We’re not sure where this is all leading in terms of life possibly imitating art, but we’re enjoying the ride.

While the fictional Pied Piper from HBO’s Silicon Valley is supposedly hiring, the show has now added a website for Hooli, the tech company that goes head-to-head at every turn with Pied Piper and is the company that Mike Judge seemingly likes to use the most to satirize the real Silicon Valley with,

Gavin Belson isn’t hiring quite yet, but you can still enjoy the subtle ridiculousness of Hooli’s site here.

Unlike the last several comedy specials you’ve seen, she’s shooting it at The Apollo Theater.

HBO’s next big one hour comedy special will come from Amy Schumer who is posting a banner year in 2015 with all the acclaim that Inside Amy Schumer is getting, hosting the MTV Movie Awards, and having her movie Trainwreck coming out soon.

Now, Amy has added to that this HBO comedy special that is set to shoot on May 29th at The Apollo Theater (Yes, the one where they’ve had a man with a broom sweep performers off stage) with Chris Rock at the helm.

Looks like they’ll have to make that banner a little bigger.

Given that he’s eaten beef in record time on Conan, this is all par for the course for TJ Miller.

TJ Miller continues to leave an indelible presence with every talk show appearance as evidenced by his latest sit down with Conan.

As the host of the upcoming Golden Trailer Awards, having a role in the Deadpool movie, and being the subversive Erlich Bachman on Silicon Valley, TJ naturally just talked about the craziest trailer that you’ll possibly ever see, some “unbelievable” details about Deadpool that Marvel might get mad at, and showed how to be Erlich in real life.

From seeing this and every other talk show appearance by TJ, you could easily cut together a full length comedy special.
