Cable networks come up big versus networks yet again.

The Television Critics’ Association have just announced the nominees for the 2016 TCA Awards. For comedy, they are (*comedy nominees in italics):

INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVEMENT IN COMEDY
Aziz Ansari, “Master of None,” Netflix
Samantha Bee, “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” TBS

“Real Time With Bill Maher,” HBO
“United Shades of America,” CNN

OUTSTANDING NEW PROGRAM

“Veep,” HBO
“You’re The Worst” FXX

HERITAGE AWARD
“The Larry Sanders Show,” HBO
“The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” CBS
“Seinfeld,” NBC

“Star Trek,” NBC
“Twin Peaks,” ABC

Outside of ABC scoring a nomination each for black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat and Seinfeld being up for a ‘Heritage Award’, cable networks dominated the TCA nominations for comedy with shows like You’re The Worst, Silicon Valley, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Veep. In fact, they even outperformed streaming services in comedy, which were lead solely by Master of None.

We’re glad to see Samantha Bee, who has hit the ground in a full-tilt sprint since her show Full Frontal premiered on TBS earlier this year, is getting a deserving nod here as well.

Given how expansive TV is, even from last year, we’re going to guess that this won’t be too much of barometer for what the rest of the awards season holds for TV comedies.

The rest of the nominees are listed here.

HBO’s “Divorce” Looks Promising From This Trailer

Whatever your feelings about Sex & The City are, you should probably let those go for the new HBO series Divorce that gives Sex & The City star Sarah Jessica Parker top billing once again.

We say that because the great Thomas Haden Church is also starring and the series happens to be created by the also great Sharon Horgan, who is the co-star and co-creator of the critical darling Catastrophe.

See the potential for this series for yourself in this teaser, then look for Divorce (as a series, hopefully not for yourself) this fall on HBO.

Finally, something has happened that’s pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Announced this morning, HBO and Larry David have come to an agreement to bring back America’s favorite curmudgeon for a ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Of course, Larry offered a perfect explanation for his return. “When asked why he decided to come back, David said, ‘In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, ‘I left, I did nothing, I returned.’”

John Oliver may poke fun at the “John Oliver Effect”, but one should beware of trying to pull a fast one in actually offering up problematic retirement plans to the Last Week Tonight staff.

Otherwise, this latest deep dive segment will happen along with the aid and ire of Billy Eichner and your retirement company might be subject to that “non-existent” John Oliver Effect.

Bill Hader’s Hitman Comedy “Barry” Ordered to Series at HBO

This will be the first time that Hader stars, executive produces, writes, and directs.

Bill Hader will star in HBO’s latest comedy series that comes from both Alec Berg (who’s worked on many of your favorite comedies between Seinfeld to Silicon Valley).

Called Barry, Hader will be a hitman who has grown weary of the hitman life and finds his way into theater and becoming an actor.

Comedy where a hitman is trying to transition into a new life sounds like rich territory for Bill and the supporting cast of Stephen Root and Henry Winkler should be icing on the cake here.

Two of the best and timeliest comedies will get to continue to be the best and most timely through next year.

Announced today, two of HBO’s current hit comedies, Veep and Silicon Valley, are getting to come back for 2017. Selina Meyer and Richard Hendricks are two of the most relevant characters on TV given this election year and the rapidly changing landscape of tech.

We can’t wait to see where either show blurs the line between fiction and reality this year and the next.

After being diagnosed with terminal cancer last year, comedian Quincy Jones has gotten more than he might have imagined in the time since then.

In the last few months, he has gotten a stand-up special crowdfunded and shot, been on Ellen twice, got his special picked up by HBO, and now, a Conan set that marks his late night stand-up debut. For someone that was given a year to live, he seems to be doing alright.

Who knows–maybe it’ll get revived years later?

In a TV season that has been full of renewals, it’s unfortunate to hear that one of the few cancellations is of Togetherness over at HBO.

The Duplass Brothers did bring a dramedy that focuses on adults still figuring out adulthood into a sort of an increasingly crowded field of Transparent, You’re The Worst, Louie, Catastrophe, but we still thought Togetherness was a very solid series from Mark and Jay Duplass.

Don’t fret too much as both of them have plenty of stuff in the works (remember that Jay stars in Transparent too).

Before his unfortunate passing yesterday, a deal to get The Larry Sanders Show over at HBO was closed. Soon, you’ll be able to watch episodes on HBO as well as stream them on HBO’s streaming services.

When that happens, make sure you have an HBO GO account or a friend or family member that’s generous with their password.

Quincy Jones got to return to The Ellen DeGeneres Show for an even bigger surprise than he got last time.

Last time, Ellen gave Quincy an appearance on the show to share his story and a plea to Netflix or HBO to air his special as well as a $10K donation from Shutterfly.

This time, Quincy got the news that HBO will indeed air his special and also received an additional $15K from Shutterfly.

So, in total from the Kickstarter and Shutterfly, Quincy has received $75,273 in donations for the special and living expenses.

His special is set to tape on Monday, April 4th at the Teragram Ballroom, which is in Westlake, just west of Downtown LA. There is a 7PM and 10PM show that you can attend. Tickets are $10-$20.

We’re guessing tickets are going to go fast, FYI.

Facing the diagnosis of terminal cancer, Quincy Jones has been more determined than ever to get a stand-up special done before he leaves this mortal coil, whenever that may be.

A Kickstarter campaign started by his friends to shoot that special has gotten over $46K raised as of this post when they were only seeking just under $5K.

This story has caught the attention of Ellen Degeneres who had Quincy on her show yesterday for several surprises including a $10,000 check from Shutterfly as well as an endorsement to HBO and Netflix brass to pick up his special to air or stream.
