The Comedian’s Guide to Feeling Better About Trying To Make It In Comedy

It’s no secret that there is a great deal of personal mental strain that comedians go through, often self-inflicted, despite having “making people laugh” in their job description.  While self-help books are often a popular topic for jokes and I’ve surprised other comedians by not having ever entered therapy, any person legitimately doing comedy would tell you that any whisper of encouragement, even if not specifically directed at them, is more than welcome.

Over the last few months, such symbolic “pats on the back” and sincere echoes of “keep at it and believe in yourself” have popped up online and have given credence to the aforementioned claim of insecurity by comedians.  The following is a collection of those metaphorical motivational posters in the form of podcasts, quotes, videos, etc. that might make you more feel comfortable along the road to answering the question:

What the fuck am I doing trying to make strangers laugh?

1) Marc Maron’s Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival Keynote Address

2) Louis C.K. and the Joan Rivers episode of Louie

3) Dan Harmon (Creator of NBC’s Community) on meeting George Gallo, writer of Midnight Run, the dilemma of being creative, and nominations.

4) “It took me until my 40s to realize it: There’s no destination. There’s no getting anywhere. There’s just the going. The key to life is to make the going really fun. Because people that are like, “If I just get to this, then boom!” And then they get there and there’s this dawning of an afterwards. Whereas I’m just always in the going. And it’s not a frantic going like, “I gotta keep going or I’m gonna go nuts!” I can not do anything for weeks or months if I need to and just sit and read books or watch movies. I’m just as fine consuming and absorbing new art as I am trying to make it. But it’s all in the going.”

–Patton Oswalt in A.V. Club Interview

5) Ira Glass, though not strictly talking about comedy, encourages new artists.

I’m at the #UCLA Psych Ward… 14-day #HOLD #PovitiveEnergy + magnets #JEWISH #SMART #818 = #HEALTHY 🙂

2) There are AMAZING THINGS happening at the Nerdist Theater, affectionately known as NerdMelt, and if you want to be a part of such events/happenings, they’re looking for interns.

3) Co-Ed Magazine makes a list of “The 11 Most Relevant Stand-up Comedians”. Going off of their definition of relevant, “…having a connection with your audience,” it’s a decent list with Louis C.K., Aziz Ansari, Daniel Tosh, Donald Glover, Whitney Cummings, and more.  However, there are incredibly notable omissions: Doug Stanhope, Paul F. Tompkins, Chelsea Handler, Chris Hardwick, and Marc Maron.

4) Nerve.com lists five young comedians who should be movie stars. Yeah, we’d like to see Jamie Lee, Hannibal Buress, John Mulaney and Morgan Murphy in a bank heist movie.

5) The Joan Rivers episode of Louie is downright inspiring and right here.

2) Today: the wonderfully hilarious Jamie Lee will be hosting coverage of the Critics’ Choice Television Awards for VH1.com. Do not miss.

3) What Megan Amram thinks an episode of “Games of Thrones” is like without having ever seen the show.

“Enter JAIME LANNISTER, an important member of the 92,924,024-person cast. He has just finished elaborately sexing a glimmering satyr with his shimmering be-amuleted penis. P.S. There are 356,753,103 satyrs in this show. They are half-horse/half-sexy horse.”

4) The march for the Onion getting a Pulitzer via their own grassroots organization AFAJP continues with the celebrity backing of Arianna Huffington, Tom Hanks, and Mario Batali. I wonder what Literally Unbelievable will makes of this.

5) Louis CK doesn’t want his show to go on forever. [via Caroline’s on Broadway]

9) It has come to the attention of the Comedy Bureau that two videos in particular on Osama Bin Laden’s death featuring the amazing Table of Galaxies (the hilarious duo of James Adomian and Whitest Kids U Know’s Trevor Moore) and Hasan Minhaj didn’t get nearly enough press (even though they’ve already been posted here) due to the political nature of the humor in them.  Interestingly enough, we have not vilified Bin Laden the same way we have Adolf Hitler.  Hitler is one of the “go to” references for evil incarnate and Bin Laden is far from that.  It’s not like when Indiana Jones met Hitler when there was no doubt that Indy is looking into the face of evil.  The annoucement of Osama Bin Laden’s death in the social networking age where “no stone goes unturned” and subsequently made fun of brought about jokes about the death of Osama Bin Laden explore the mythos behind Osama Bin Laden, even questioning whether he really died or not.  Watch the two videos below and think about it.

On FX JUNE 23rd at 10:30pm. In conclusion, CK writes, directs, stars, produces, edits, and promotes via Youtube his own show.

Also, hilarious spot.

Louie Season 2 Promo. I know it’s just a promo, but this is one of those “drop what you’re doing moments”.  So go ahead and do that and watch.
