Pick of the Day: We Still Like You (in LA & NYC) 7/14 & 7/20

July 12, 2022
News
allen strickland williams, allison rose, courtney mcginnis, jake noll, john rosenberger, los angeles comedy, melody kamali, nyc comedy, rachel weeks, rufat agayev, sammy mowrey, storytelling, terence hartnett, tyjuan lewis, tyler snodgrass, we still like you

Though storytelling is no stranger to comedy, We Still Like You still stands out as one of the most original and daring comedic storytelling shows that we’ve ever seen and we’re so glad to find that it has survived to this side of the pandemic and is still putting up live shows around the country.

For the uninitiated, We Still Like You not only puts comedians in a position to tell a very personal story, but one where they are very clearly not the hero with the audience reminding them, at the end, in unison, that, “We still like you.” Cathartic and downright hysterical, you should never miss any one of these.

Lucky for both coasts that there are NYC and LA shows coming up.

7/14 @ Central Organic (in Brooklyn) w/Courtney Magginis, Melody Kamali, Rufat Agayev, Terence Hartnett, and Grace Freud w/Tyler Snodgrass and John Rosenberger hosting.

7/20 @ Secret LA Spot w/Sammy Mowrey, Tyjuan Lewis, Jake Noll, Allison Rose, Rachel Weeks, and Allen Strickland Williams w/Danii Gallegos & Tyler Snodgrass hosting (DM @westilllikeyou to RSVP/get address)

Allen Strickland Williams’ ‘Unmatched’ in Development at Quibi

Once more, Quibi scores another bleeding-edge cool comedy project, this time from Allen Strickland Williams with a show about rebelling against a perfected dating app for the sake of sexual freedom and personal agency.

Coupled with the debut of his half hour special at Comedy Central, Williams is having a pretty swell November.

Let’s hope that Unmatched makes it to series to see what ASW has up his very fancy sleeves.

The somewhat controlled chaos of Late Late Breakfast is finally back with more hysterical, insane challenges for LA favorites in stand-up to attempt while doing their sets.

Hosts Tyler Jackson and Danny Maupin will be at Lyric Hyperion in Silverlake this time around on Sat. Jul. 20th at 4PM. Tickets are only $5 for what is truly a beautifully bonkers experience.

Longtime TCB favorite Dave Ross has been putting up ultra short sketches @davetotheross on Twitter for over a month now and each one of them has been great and absurd as all hell.

We won’t explain any further and just let you enjoy these sketch morsels as fresh as possible:

1. Congressmen

2. New Jersey

3. Jackass

4. Phone

5. Put Your Phone Away

Also, we’re pretty sure fans of Dave’s old sketch group, WOMEN, will be plenty thrilled with these.

Please Enjoy Dark Comedy Short About Finding Representation “Unmarketable” from Megan Koester and Steven Feinartz

One of the perpetual mysteries of the entertainment business from the creatives/entertainers/talents’ side is how to get decent representation.

So many factors involve an agency or management company taking you on as a client and two of them are how marketable you are and, unfortunately, how lucky you are.

From the minds of Megan Koester and Steven Feinartz, comes a darkly comedic tale of how attempting to get an agent goes horribly awry with NYTVF selection, Unmarketable.

Watch and enjoy it here.

Also, props to LA born-and-bred Eric Dadourian giving Ari from Entourage a run for his money.

Nikki Black and Nina Tarr’s It’s Your Funeral really does feature live eulogies of audience members that have not yet left this mortal coil after a brief interview by featured comedians.

If you wanted a fun preview of what a living funeral might be like, this is absolutely for you, especially for the fact that Black and Tarr play two charming Jersey Girls who love the macabre.

The latest edition of It’s Your Funeral is happening this week at Think Tank Gallery. Get more details here.

On Sunday nights, there’s a good chance you might find us at Bigfoot Lodge East for our last stop of the evening, Babe Island.

Tonight, there unfortunately will be no Babe Island at said Bigfoot Lodge as ASW, Androsky, Gborie, and Fritz are moving their show one neighborhood over to Bar Angeles (AKA The Elliott Smith Bar at 4330 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA) two weeks from now on Sunday, September 10th.

Per usual, they stacked the line-up with LA favorites: Jon Daly, Alex & Jude, Richard Bain, Billy Bonnell, and Amy Silverberg.

Except for the location change, it should be business as usual with the show starting around 10PM and there being no cover or minimum.

Monthly a house in Silverlake gets turned into a ridiculous “drinking game” comedy show/house party with Brew Haha. Hundreds of folks come out and it seriously looks and feels like you’re in one of those great parties that you’d only see in movies.

Brew Haha will now be trying their hand down in the OC at the Rec Room in Huntington Beach this Saturday, July 29th with a fine line-up of Allen Strickland Williams, Steph Tolev, Morgan Jay, Steve Hernandez, and Brad Silnutzer.

Tickets are $5-$10 and you can (and should) get them here.

At this point in time, you’ve probably heard how divided we are as a country ad nauseam over POTUS, healthcare, gun control, etc.

A nice solution or reprieve from that might be hear to comedians debate things that do not matter whatsoever like Dr. Dre vs. Dr. Seuss.

That is what the traveling comedy show and podcast Arguments & Grievances brings to the table and will be doing so next week at Nerdmelt with some of LA’s best.

Matt Ingebretson, who we feature a lot here, has put together an entire collection of short form pieces from some of the funniest people currently in and around Los Angeles for The Impolite: A Collection of Comedic Lit From LA.

Those people include such comedy folks as:

Megan Amram, Nathan Buckley, Eric Dadourian, Raj Desai, Emily Heller, Karen Kilgariff, Megan Koester, Yassir Lester, Aparna Nancherla, Eddie Pepitone, Sean Tejaratchi, Amber Tozer, David Venhuizen, Patrick Walsh, Jay Weingarten, Jake Weisman, Nick Wiger, and Allen Strickland Williams.

The book has everything from “…high-concept humor to idiotic poetry to a detailed factual account of how Cash Money Records caused a rift between a step-father and his son,” says Ingebretson.

So, with all of that being said, we suggest taking $10 and spending on it buying and enjoying “The Impolite”.

Waking up from a coma after a long period of time, many years in fact can be jarring. Though a fictional depiction of someone waking up from a coma needs an update for these days rather than relying on something like While You Were Sleeping.

With that in mind, Women Comedy present a present day “100% real” reenactment of waking from a coma is like in 2015.
