Pick of the Day: Ali Wong Live! (in LA & NYC) 5/19, 6/16, and 8/1-8/6

March 31, 2023
News
ali wong, la comedy, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

It has been quite some time and then some (and maybe a bit extra) since comedy superstar Ali Wong has gone on a big tour and especially headlined in and around LA (remember when she played The Wiltern every weekend for over a month and they were all sold out shows?).

Well, 2023 is going to be another big year for Ali as the highly anticipated revenge dramedy BEEF is due out on Netflix soon and Ali is going to be a massive tour across North America stretching from April to September.

For LA and NYC, Wong has lined-up early and late shows as follows:

Fri. May 19th-Thousand Oaks, Bank of America Performing Arts Center with tickets starting at $56 + fees
Fri. Jun. 16th-LBC, Terrace Theater at Long Beach Convention Center with tickets starting at $76 + fees
Tues. Aug. 1st-Sun. Aug. 6th-NYC, Beacon Theatre with tickets starting at $67 + fees

These tickets are already going pretty fast, so you best hop on them at aliwong.com/tour.

A24’s Latest Will Be an All-Out Rage Feud Comedy Between Ali Wong and Steven Yeun in “BEEF”

March 16, 2023
News
a24, ali wong, beef, lee sung jin, netflix, steven yeun

A24’s riding high off one hell of an awards season right now. Between Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, The Whale, and Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, the brand already almost did no wrong in the eyes of their fervent followers and probably feel even more vindicated now.

With that in mind, it’s a great time for A24 to introduce their newest project, a juicy revenge dark comedy series, BEEF, that gets as petty and off-the-rails as class warfare can get between two people who are really great at channeling rage into their performances, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. Created by Lee Sung Jin (Undone, Dave, Tuca & Bertie), this series shows lots of promise, especially given the zeitgeist favors revenge-fueled phenomenons like John Wick and Succession.

Take a gander for yourself here with the official trailer here, then look for all episodes of BEEF to drop on Netflix come Thurs. Apr. 6th.

Pick of the Day: Ali Wong & Friends (in LA) 11/1-11/9

News
ali wong, hollywood improv, los angeles, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

The last time Ali Wong announced a run of shows, she sold out The Wiltern several weekends in a row. The bright, shining comedy star sells tickets out quicker than nearly most headliners in comedy and you really ought to not miss a chance to see Wong work out new material and have some of her favorite comedy folks join her in an incredibly intimate setting of The Hollywood Improv Lab.

Don’t make a mistake and hesitate, this run of shows starting tomorrow will sell out as well.

Thus far, Ali has these dates slotted:

11/1 @ 9:30PM

11/2 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

11/7 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

11/8 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

11/9 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

Tickets are $35 (plus 2 item min.) and you better go tickets RIGHT NOW.

Get Your First Look at Sheng Wang’s First Hour Special “Sweet and Juicy” (That’s Also Ali Wong’s First Time Directing)

August 22, 2022
News
ali wong, netflix, sheng wang, stand up comedy

An hour special from Sheng Wang is long, long overdue. A slow burn comedic style that still hits so hard with great punchlines, specifically pitch perfect diction and delivery is very hard to pull off and, consequently, a rarity these days.

Sheng Wang makes such a feat seem so effortless as his deep, reassuring voice makes some of the most precise writing in all of comedy feel buttery. Certainly, the world will get treated to such delights come Tues. Sept. 6th when Sheng’s first hour special, Sweet and Juicy, debuts on Netflix. As a bonus, you’ll get to see Ali Wong’s directorial debut as she is at the helm for this hour special for the very first time.

Get your first taste of all of this in the trailer, which is, thankfully, just one complete joke that you can savor and then get hooked on.

Sheng Wang Is Getting a Netflix Hour Special with Ali Wong Directing

April 20, 2022
News
ali wong, comedy special, netflix, sheng wang, stand up comedy

(via Variety)

At this moment in comedy, very few voices are as unique as Sheng Wang. His measured cadence, calming ease on stage, and chill delivery are all extremely clever dressing for his perfectly written jokes. Wang has been one of comedy’s best artisans (with one of the most soothing voices to boot) for years now and has been well overdue for an hour special.

If you’ve gotten lucky enough to snag tickets to see Ali Wong recently, you might have seen Sheng open and know what we’re talking about. It’s great to see that Sheng will be one of the specials in Netflix’s comedy special pipeline coming up considering that the streaming giant has really saturated itself with so many specials from, perhaps, too many comedians that it’s harder and harder to stand out on the platform.

Thank goodness that Netflix has wised up and given him an hour special with his good friend Ali Wong attached to produce and direct. If you’re in or around the LA area on Jun. 12th, you be witness to this debut hour special from Sheng at either 6PM PT or 8PM PT. Pre-sale tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10AM PT w/code PEPPER and GA goes on sale at 5/22 at 10AM PT all at shengwangtime.com. So, you better set a reminder.

See the Full Breadth of Big Mouth’s Human Resources In Its First Full-Length Trailer

It was kind of the tease of the last season of Big Mouth that there is more to the world of Hormone Monsters and Shame Wizards than what we’ve seen terrorize or inspire the human teens going through the nightmare that is puberty. Thus, that will be the core of the spin-off series Human Resources.

The world of Human Resources will explore all sorts of Depression Kitties, Logic Rocks, Grati-Toads, and much much more and how off-the-rails their world is as well. Per usual with Big Mouth (or shall we say the Big Mouth Cinematic Universe), it’s stacked with a bright, shining, star studded voice cast that includes Aidy Bryant, Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph, Brandon Kyle Goodman, David Thewlis, Randall Park, Keke Palmer, Lupita Nyong’o, Rosie Perez, Ali Wong, Helen Mirren, Henry Winkler, Janelle Monáe, and Hugh Jackman.

Get a full, rollicking taste of what that’s all going to be like (maybe even more raunchy than Big Mouth?) in this trailer here, then look for all episodes to drop on Netflix on Fri. Mar. 18th.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 97: Erik Abriss & The Actual Good Fight

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
ali wong, bob odenkirk, david cross, joe rogan, spotify

If you’ve listened to the nearly 100 episodes of The Comedy Bureau Field Report that have been recorded and released, you ought to know that there are an unbelievable amount of forces pushing and pulling at each other underneath the shiny, delightful surface of comedy. As of 2022, there is stil no real union that comedians have largely organized behind and, as such, fairness and equity for labor in comedy is one of its most critical issues (and is connected to inclusivity, access, safety, etc.). Intrepid LA indie comedy producer Erik Abriss and TCB’s Jake Kroeger get into the thick of these intersections of comedy, labor, representation, and really trying to figure some sort of North Star to look for and follow to a better future in comedy.

Yes, that means we talk about Joe Rogan’s mess with disinformation on The Joe Rogan Experience and ignorantly the potentially dangerous level of influence he has on his listeners. Also, “hot” takes on Ali Wong’s new special and Bob Odenkirk and David Cross’ new project.

Pick of the Day: Ali Wong (near LA) 11/16 & 11/17

News
ali wong, irvine, los angeles comedy, orange county, stand up comedy

There used to be a time, before Netflix performed original comedy specials, that you were able to catch one Ali Wong performing at all sorts of spots, big and small, all over the place. However, that time has long since passed as Ali Wong has stupendously successful specials, books, tours, movies, TV shows, cartoons that have been part of her ascent into one of the most sought out acts in stand-up comedy today.

Thus, you shouldn’t miss a chance to get a ticket to go see her and you have such a chance right at this very moment if you’re around LA. Ali is headlining The Irvine Improv on Tues. 11/16 & Wed. Nov. 17th at 8PM PT. She is one of the rare folks that sells out theaters in LA by headlining, but does it sparingly (except for that one time where she played every weekend at the Wiltern for over a month). There are still tickets on sale for $40 (+ 2 item min.) and you might want to go snag yours right now before they sell out.

The time for the second season of the wild and phenomenal Tuca & Bertie is nigh. For awhile, we were all left wondering what the fate of the show would be as Netflix had relinquished any chance for a second season on their platform.

Thankfully, Lisa Hanawalt and company along with, of course, Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish, as Bertie and Tuca, all got their shot at a cooler network, Adult Swim. Once more, the wait for brand new Tuca & Bertie isn’t much longer as Jun. 13th has been set as the season 2 premiere date.

After some animatics, sneak peeks, etc. over the last several months, here’s a full gander at what’s in store for Tuca & Bertie or, rather, what they have in store for their lush animated world with the official season 2 trailer.

For a little while, we were left grieving the news that Tuca & Bertie wouldn’t be picked up for another season at Netflix. Then, Adult Swim gave Lisa Hanawalt and her beautiful, hysterical, otherworldly creation Tuca & Bertie another season, which we absolutely couldn’t wait for. There was an animatic released last year that gave us a bit of hope and excitement for what’s to come for the oddest bird couple.

Now, here‘s a full sneak peek, fully animated and just as charming and wild as you’ve come to expect, of season 2 of Tuca & Bertie.

There’s no specific premiere date (and what use are those anyway as everything changes all the time?), but it looks as though we can expect new episodes to start rolling out this Summer.

Since it looks more and more likely that the world will survive into 2021, there are things we can and will look forward to. A vaccine is at the top of most people’s lists, but a new season of Tuca & Bertie is up there.

Fresh from  this past weekend, Tuca & Bertie creator Lisa Hanawalt graciously gave a peek of a sneak peek with an animatic clip from season 2. Tuca & Bertie are together again at a strip club and, as is one of the magical things about this show, it’s a team of plant strippers are on stage.

If you’re having a bit of trouble dreaming up that up, just enjoy the sneak sneak peek here.

Tuca & Bertie Is Being Revived at Adult Swim

It’s pretty clear to us that Tuca & Bertie, the animated series from Lisa Hanawalt that featured Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish’s voices as birds didn’t get enough of a chance over at Netflix. It was such a wildly imaginative, colorful, unique, funny world with a very lovable duo of Tuca & Bertie (that may be the successors to Broad City’s Abbi & Ilana for female friendship on TV?).

Announced this morning, Tuca & Bertie will be getting the greater chances that they deserve over at Adult Swim with an entirely new season due next year. That’s all the details for now, but, go watch/rewatch the inaugural season of Tuca & Bertie over at Netflix to get transported to the wild, lush, and nuanced universe that Hanawalt created.

Ali Wong Will Stay at Netflix for Her Next Two Specials

Apparently, HBO had their sights set on Ali Wong, who shot to fame with two Netflix specials Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife, in the ongoing war for comedy prestige with Netflix.

Yet, Netflix prevailed, presumably as they were going to dole out more cash (and we wouldn’t be more surprised if they’ve got some other lovely things lined-up for Wong).

In any case, this means that we all will be getting an Ali Wong special next year and another one in the perhaps not so distant future after that.

What lies in the future between the big players in the comedy special space? It has yet to be seen, but bidding wars will probably get fiercer as networks and streaming services amasses war chests of exclusive comedy specials.

This will sell out pretty quick, so we’ll keep this short. The one and only Ali Wong has added dates to her Milk & Money Tour for the Long Beach Convention Center on Feb. 1st at 7PM & 10PM.

If you didn’t get a chance to catch her for the row of weekends she played at the Wiltern, then you have another shot to catch her in 2020. Pre-sale tickets are now available with the code “COBRA” and you better snag them quick here.

Tuca and Bertie Trailer Shows a World That May Be Even Wilder Than BoJack Horseman

Considering Lisa Hanawalt was instrumental to the creation of BoJack Horseman, it had us curious what her own show Tuca & Bertie about two Odd Couple-ish bird ladies would sound/feel/look like and if it would, be at all, similar to BoJack.

Well, this full trailer shows a world that’s, if you can imagine, a little more “out there”, brimming with more vibrant colors, and, in total, a rollicking universe that’s all it’s own with the voices of Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish leading the way.

See for yourself here, then look for episodes of Tuca & Bertie to start streaming on Netflix on Fri. May 3rd.

If you’re jonesing for Ali Wong’s latest work (as millions have following the release of her two specials, you’ll be delighted to hear that she’s coming out with a book later this year.

The book itself will actually be an endearing, but we’re sure done up in Ali’s biting sense of humor, collection of letters to her daughter that will cover “intimate tales, untold secrets, and advice for living your best life”. It’s quite the advanced birthday or holiday gift for her daughters (as well as every Ali Wong fan).

Dear Girls is available for pre-order right now from Penguin Random House right here and will be coming out in hardcover on Tues. Oct. 15th.

One of the shows we were most excited for coming into 2019 is Tuca & Bertie, a sort of Odd-Couple-esque animated series starring two middle-aged birdwomen voiced by Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong.

Well, the series premiere is just around the corner (all episodes start streaming on Friday, May 3rd on Netflix) and we we’re finally getting a first look into the show in this featurette that shows creator Lisa Hanawalt (who is getting upgraded from her gig at BoJack Horseman) and stars Haddish and Wong in the recording booth as well as them in their bird women form.

Somehow, we’re even more excited about Tuca & Bertie now.

Two years ago, Ali Wong’s first hour special Baby Cobra, performed while pregnant, premiered on Netflix. It, as you probably are well aware of, catapulted her and her unapologetic brand of comedy into being famous.

Ali returns to the stage to pretty much offer up a sequel with Hard Knock Wife. At its core, Ali is the same firebrand comedian that millions of a folks fell in love with, but is now more successful than her husband and has been through a couple years of motherhood. If you want a great, NSFW take on mother and a wife in 2018, you’ll enjoy this hour.

Here’s a trailer to get a taste.

You can stream Hard Knock Wife now on Netflix. It’s a pretty great way to cap off Mother’s Day we think.

Ali Wong’s Next Comedy Special Will Be Coming to Netflix in 2018

Ali Wong represents an important landmark in Netflix comedy specials for how much it catapulted in her to the stardom that she has now and how much brighter it made Netflix’s comedy branding look.

After Wong’s Baby Cobra came some of Netflix’s biggest acquisitions and original specials came including ones from Dave Chappelle, Louis C.K., Amy Schumer, and Jerry Seinfeld.

So, looking forward to a TBD date in 2018, Wong’s next special, which was just taped this weekend, is something that you absolutely need to be on the lookout for.

Ali Wong and Randall Park Will Star in a Rom Com Feature That They Co-Wrote for Netflix

This romantic comedy will follow a bit of a star crossed lovers archetype as both protagonists, though in love with each other, grow up in very different circumstances.

What has us excited is the possibility of Ali bringing her comedic sensibilities that you saw on her Netflix special, Baby Cobra, and Randall bringing his from Channel 101 to a modern romantic comedy. This project will be co-written by Grimm staff writer and playwright Michael Golamco as well, which could add yet another unique flavor here.

With the creative latitude one might get at Netflix, such a unique rom com, whatever that may be, could be very possible.

Random House and Ali Wong have a struck deal for Ali’s first book, which will feature stories and lessons that Ali has learned throughout her life. All of that will be within the frame of letters to her baby daughter.
