International Fans of “The Simpsons” Made a Pixel Art Couch Gag and Protest in The Streets Over Time Slot Change

It should come as no surprise to any of us that the living legend of an animated series The Simpsons, going 26 seasons strong, has a fervent following worldwide.

Recent examples of this came this week as an Australian duo of Paul Robertson and Ivan Dixon created a fantastic pixel art “couch gag” that will be used on tonight’s episode. The team at The Simpsons even had a fun response to their submission.

Much more unbelievable than that, over two thousands Bolivians gathered in the streets to protest a time slot change of The Simpsons (via The AV Club).

It’s been quite the week for The Simpsons that was capped off with a WGA Award win.

Welcome “The Special without Brett Davis”, The Replacement of “The Chris Gethard Show”

Uncategorized

As Chris Gethard and The Chris Gethard Show are headed to actual cable TV thanks to the good folks over at Fusion, there was a vacant slot for late Wednesday nights at what’s now probably one of the most famous public access networks, MNN.

Not one to let the slot fade away, Gethard has handed the keys to Brett Davis and his “The Special without Brett Davis”. Just having watched the first episode with guests Jake Fogelnest and Joe Pera, we think you are all going to be happy with Davis and company as TCGS’ replacement. They definitely keep the funny and the bizarre of this time slot going and we can’t wait to see what they’re going to pull off in the months to come.

We’re not going to reveal anything else, so just go watch it already.

If you want to attend a taping (if you live anywhere in NYC, we highly recommend it), e-mail thespecialwithout@gmail.com.

John Oliver and “Last Week Tonight” Shows That Big Tobacco Is Still a Force To Be Reckoned With

February 16, 2015
Uncategorized
big tobacco, john oliver, last week tonight

Many laws here in America have curbed smoking and “Big Tobacco” has gotten much needed regulation over the years. However, Big Tobacco still shows signs of their old habits by popping up elsewhere in the world where the leash on them is much longer.

Even with 2006’s Thank You For Smoking doing a great job of sending up the abuses of the Tobacco Industry, there’s still much more to satirize from the people who make cigarettes, like companies suing entire countries, as John Oliver and Last Week Tonight discovered.

It’s a great segment to hit the ground running after winning that WGA Award this weekend. Watch it all here.

Conan O’Brien To Be First U.S. Late Night Talk Show Host To Tape in Cuba Since 1962

Conan O’Brien is having a pretty amazing year as far in taking his show out of the studio. The fantastic remotes aside, he already has a trip to Comic-Con scheduled for later this year and now, he has traveled to Cuba since sanctions had been lifted by Obama to tape an episode.

Tonight Show host Jack Paar was the last late night talk show from the U.S. to do so all the way back in 1962 when he chatted with Fidel Castro.

We’re not sure what’s going to happen, but we’re sure Conan is going to make some comedy gold out of riding in old cars and visiting a cigar factory. We’ll find out when the episode airs Mar. 4th.

Jessica Williams Says She Won’t Be Hosting “The Daily Show”

February 16, 2015
Uncategorized

After the announcement of Jon Stewart’s upcoming retirement as host of The Daily Show, there was, as was to be expected, rampant speculation about who would replace Stewart. There were a good deal of folks that cast their votes immediately for current Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams to fill the role. The idea was furthered by the upcoming movie Hot Tub Machine 2 depicting her as the host in the not so distant future.

However, last night, Williams expressed her appreciation for the sentiments, but also stated that she won’t be hosting The Daily Show following Jon’s exit.

In her own words, she tweeted:

Fact 1: I’m not hosting. Thank you but I am extremely under-qualified for the job! At this age (25) if something happens politically that I don’t agree with, I need to go to my room & like not come out for, like, 7 days. That being said I am super not right for it, but there are quite a few people who are! Can’t wait to stick around & see what happens.

So, you can take off one picture off all of your bulletin boards of potential Daily Show replacements that you all obviously have right now.

The SNL 40th Anniversary Special Brings Back “Celebrity Jeopardy”, Got 23 Million People Watching, and Is Perfect Boost For SNL App

The Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special was the gigantic, nostalgic whirlwind of a walk down Studio 8H that we were led to believe it was.

Cast members, hosts, writers, etc. from the show in 1975 until now were in attendance to pay homage to SNL not only as a show, but a cultural institution.

There was a big ol’ musical revue kicked off by Martin Short and Maya Rudolph as Beyonce, Weekend Update anchored by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Jane Curtin, a touching In Memoriam tribute (that also has a pretty great burn at the end), and rare glimpses into auditions of SNL cast members as well as some folks that should have been cast members like Stephen Colbert.

Also, SNL’s Celebrity Jeopardy lived once more, complete with Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery and Norm MacDonald as Burt Reynolds,  and was every bit as glorious during its run in the late 90’s through the 2000s.

It should come as no surprise that this special scored a record 23 million viewers from last night (via Variety) and will probably have millions watching several of the clips over at Hulu and YouTube.

With all of the reminiscing of seasons past, it’s perfect timing on SNL’s part to push their SNL app that gives access to thousands of clips from the past 40 seasons.

If you didn’t catch the special last night, hopefully you’ll have today off to catch up.

March is just around the corner, which means The Late Late Show with James Corden is almost set to premiere. In the meantime, the interim period of The Late Late Show is still in effect and, this week, they have very intriguing guests hosts in Thomas Lennon, Lauren Graham and Will Arnett.

Lennon is scheduled for Mon-Wed., Graham on Thurs., and Arnett for Fri.

In addition to their hijinks, Weird Al Yankovic, Natasha Leggero, Nick Kroll, Matthew Perry, Tom Papa, Jimmy Kimmel, John Krasinski, and David Cross are all set to be guests this week too.

Take note that Lennon has voiced Craig Ferguson’s robot skeleton sidekick Geoffrey Peterson at The Late Late Show from time to time and perhaps he’ll do it again.

Find out what happens (two weeks ago, they had the Super Bowl Sharks on) by tuning in to CBS at 12:35AM all week long.

One of the longest running comedy publications in existence, MAD Magazine, has invited Weird Al Yankovic to be a guest editor for the next issue.

With his acceptance of the invitation, Yankovic will apparently be the magazine’s first guest editor.

Yankovic will also be joining in other noted comedy folks like Key & Peele with Entertainment Weekly  or Judd Apatow with Vanity Fair recently guest editing the magazine’s comedy issues.

As you can clearly tell, he’s been dreaming of this for awhile:

Help Finish Documentary About Bassem Youssef “Tickling Giants”

Oft referred to as the Egyptian Jon Stewart, Bassem Youssef hosted a hit satirical news show in Egypt called Al Bernameg. However, as free speech seems to be more limited over there than it is here, Youssef ran into problems when poking fun at those in power.

A documentary is being made about his trials and tribulations in trying to pull off what he pulled off called Tickling Giants. They’re looking to crowdfund $150,000 on Indiegogo by Mar. 10th. As of this post, they have raised $47,827.

If you donate $20, you’ll get a digital download of the movie, but, in general, any amount donated to this project is definitely going to a good cause for both comedy and free speech.

HBO Picks Up “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” For Two Seasons That Will Run Through 2017

For those of you that had thought that John Oliver was going to possibly leave Last Week Tonight to replace Jon Stewart later this year at The Daily Show, you obviously aren’t aware of how good Oliver has it over at HBO and how much HBO is into Oliver.

Today, that was all made clear by HBO announcing that two 35 episode seasons of Last Week Tonight have been ordered that will air in 2016 and 2017 separately.

Aside from possibly narrowing your list on who is coming to The Daily Show desk, rejoice in the fact that will have almost three more years of Oliver at his own desk doing stuff like this week’s takedown of Big Tobacco.

Of the Oscar nominated pictures in the Foreign Language Film category this year, Damián Szifron’s Wild Tales (titled Relatos Salvajes when originally released in Argentina) presented by Pedro Almodovar stands out as it combines a bits of a comedy and a thriller in a few stories that represent a revenge anthology. The premise kind of reminds us a little of the brilliant Seven Psychopaths from Martin McDonagh.

See what we’re talking about in the trailer here and if your interest has been peaked, you can perhaps catch Wild Tales in limited release this Fri. Feb. 20th.

Matt Ingebretson, who we feature a lot here, has put together an entire collection of short form pieces from some of the funniest people currently in and around Los Angeles for The Impolite: A Collection of Comedic Lit From LA.

Those people include such comedy folks as:

Megan Amram, Nathan Buckley, Eric Dadourian, Raj Desai, Emily Heller, Karen Kilgariff, Megan Koester, Yassir Lester, Aparna Nancherla, Eddie Pepitone, Sean Tejaratchi, Amber Tozer, David Venhuizen, Patrick Walsh, Jay Weingarten, Jake Weisman, Nick Wiger, and Allen Strickland Williams.

The book has everything from “…high-concept humor to idiotic poetry to a detailed factual account of how Cash Money Records caused a rift between a step-father and his son,” says Ingebretson.

So, with all of that being said, we suggest taking $10 and spending on it buying and enjoying “The Impolite”.
