You Have One Less Excuse to See The Tomorrow Show, The Walsh Brothers Show, or The Midnight Show

The LA Metro (yes, that’s a real thing that people use in this city) is extending its hours. Some of LA’s best live comedy shows start at midnight, so stop being lame like most businesses in LA county and stay up past 12AM on the weekend, OK?

Tammy Pescatelli Assaulted on Stage and There Are No Arrests

OK, obviously this person did not learn about free speech this week like everyone else did.  Comedians are free to say what they want on stage and audience members are free to say what they want on what they hear, hopefully though, after the show.

Physical assault is not either of those things.

Yanks Over at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

July 15, 2012
Uncategorized

The world famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival is only weeks away and, if you have the type of coin to afford that kind of trip, there’s literally thousands of shows to see (almost a thousand of them are strictly comedy). More than a handful of them are very funny Yanks (we’re assuming that the Scottish also call us Yanks) that definitely deserve more worldwide recognition.

Like…

Kumail Nanjiani, Hannibal Buress, Rory Scovel, Eddie Pepitone, Kristine Levine, The Imaginary Radio Program, Set List, The Super Serious Show, The Pajama Men (even though they’re way more famous in the UK than here), Rick Shapiro, and more.

If you’re someone who lives not in the U.S., consider this a nice guide to American comedy at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Watch Little Miss Sunshine, Ruby Sparks, Bridesmaids, and More Outdoors

July 15, 2012
Uncategorized

Been waiting for the opportunity to watch a movie outdoors and not be in a cemetery?

Well, Street Food Cinema is here this summer in LA to solve that very specific problem every Saturday with a portable screen, a legion of food trucks, and the lovely environs of Exposition Park near USC/Downtown.

They’ve already screened The 40 Year Old Virgin and Rocky Horror Picture Show, but they still have:

Little Miss Sunshine and Ruby Sparks Jul 21st
Bridesmaids Aug. 4th
Sixteen Candles and Valley Girl Aug. 18th
Weird Science Aug. 25th

Tickets are only $10, doors are at 5:30PM, and the movies are at 8:30PM. Also, in case you didn’t know, we have lovely weather here in Los Angeles. It’d be a shame if you didn’t go outside.

Sarah Silverman Finds Way To Be More Ridiculous Than Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC

July 16, 2012
Uncategorized

Stephen Colbert’s Super PAC has been well documented as a phenomenon that tows the line between comedy, performance art, and political action. Well, Sarah Silverman just raised the stakes a whole sex act by offering casino tycoon Sheldon Adelson “a scissoring session” if he donates his announced $100 million contribution to Mitt Romney to Barack Obama instead.

The only thing that could possibly top this is if Ron Paul was just kidding the whole time.

We’re Almost as Excited for Pete Holmes/Matt McCarthy Parody of The Dark Knight as the Real Thing

Pete Holmes and Matt McCarthy have been parodying Christopher Nolan’s batman trilogy for quite some time now for College Humor and they have done it superbly. This latest reinterpretation of one of the most dramatic scenes of The Dark Knight is no different.

Also, both Pete and Matt are hilarious in non-Batman life and you should check the tons of other stuff they do.

Please Watch Modern Comedian, One of the Best Docu-Series We’ve Seen on Comedy

July 16, 2012
Uncategorized

Filmmaker Scott Moran just launched his web series, Modern Comedian, exploring the craft of comedy in a time that defies labels and limitations. From just this one episode with Kurt Braunohler, this is one the best looks into legitimately seeing comedians, especially ones pushing the idea of what comedy can be, working at their craft, then executing.

The next episode is next Monday with Ben Kronberg and we simply can’t wait to hear about his writing process.

Louis CK Weighs In on Tosh Incident on The Daily Show

Apparently, Louis CK had no idea what was happening when he reportedly “defended” Daniel Tosh and the rape joke incident at the Laugh Factory as he appeared on The Daily Show last night. Of course, he shares his feelings on it in the funniest way possible by jokingly taking down comedians, bloggers, men, women, and The Mets all at the same time.

Mike O’Brien’s 7 Minutes in Heaven Gets Real Goofy with Folk Singer Joanna Newsom

In all of the episodes of SNL’s Mike O’Brien’s web series, 7 Minutes in Heaven, there is something special about the ones with musicians on. Specifically, this really kooky episode with folk singer Joanna Newsom and the one with Reggie Watts are our two favorites. Maybe the expression “7 minutes in heaven” should refer to impromptu musical jam sessions in the closet instead of sex?

Stop Telling Jen Kirkman to Have Kids and Pre-Order Her Book

July 18, 2012
Uncategorized

Hey world! My book I Can Barely Take Care of Myself comes out April 2013. But it is available for pre-order now! Why pre-order? It helps the man (I mean Simon and Schuster executives) know that there are people out there who want to read about the topic of Child-free by Choice. And theyll get behind my book even more - instead of yell at me.) Links to AmazonPaperback:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1451667000/simonsayscom Kindle:http://www.amazon.com/Barely-Take-Care-Myself-ebook/dp/B008J4B3YG/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1341955599&sr=1-1&keywords=jen+kirkmanLinks to B&NPaperback:http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/i-can-barely-take-care-of-myself-jen-kirkman/1112033189?ean=9781451667004&format=paperbackNook:http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s/i-can-barely-take-care-of-myself-tales?keyword=i+can+barely+take+care+of+myself+tales+&&store=nookstore&iehack=%E2%98%A0APPLE iBOOKSTOREhttp://itunes.apple.com/us/book/i-can-barely-take-care-myself/id543374001?mt=11 Chelsea Lately regular Jen Kirkman is childfree by choice. Heres what shed like to say to everyone who cant stop telling her shell change her mind. Its hard to be an adult. You have to dress yourself and pay bills and remember to buy birthday gifts. You have to drive and get annual physicals and tip for good service. Some adults take on the added burden of caring for a tiny human with no language skills or bladder control. Parenthood can be very rewarding, but lets face it, so are margaritas at the adults-only pool. Jen Kirkmans stand-up routine includes lots of jokes about not having kids (and some about masturbation and Johnny Depp), and total strangers constantly approach her and ask, Who will take care of you when youre old? (Servants!) Some insist, But youd be such a great mom! (Really? You know me so well!) Whether living rent-free in her childhood bedroom while trying to break into comedy (the best free birth control around, she says), or taking the stage at major clubs and joining a hit TV show-and along the way getting married, divorced, and attending excruciating afternoon birthday parties for her parent friends-Jen is completely happy and fulfilled by her decision not to procreate. I Can Barely Take Care of Myself is a beacon of hilarious hope for anyone whose major life decisions have been questioned by friends, family, and strangers in a comedy club bathroom. And for everyone who wonders if Jen will ever know true love without looking into the eyes of her child. (A girl can dream.) Advance praise for Jen Kirkmans I Can Barely Take Care of Myself:Jen has a unique, fresh, and funny way of reminding people that sometimes, you really do know whats best for you.-Sarah Colonna, comedian and New York Times bestselling author of Life as I Blow ItIm now convinced of two things: Jen is freaking hilarious and she should definitely not have a baby-she should have a Valium.-Whitney Cummings, creator of Two Broke Girls and Whitney

Why people furiously and sincerely argue about why Jen Kirkman needs to have kids to live a fulfilled life instead of just laughing at her hilarious comedy is completely beyond us. You can and should pre-order her book, “I Can Barely Take Care of Myself”, which comes out April 2013, whether it’s cleverly intentional or not, approximately 9 months from now.

Charlie Kaufman’s Anomalisa with Dan Harmon on Kickstarter is Almost Funded

Charlie Kaufman, Dan Harmon, and Starburns Industries gave themselves two months to raise $200,000 for their own stop motion feature film, Anomalisa.

It’s been a week and they only need a little more than $5000. We don’t know where this will lead to, but we like the potential that crowdfunding can choose the movies we want to see.
