Reno 911! to Ride Again at Quibi

Reno 911! to Ride Again at Quibi

Quibi is really good at keeping their hype up in the air. Their curious, niche projects from very funny people (amongst dozens of other genre projects they’ve got in development) have drummed plenty of anticipation for the short form streaming service.

A full on revival of Reno 911!, as far as their comedy slate is concerned, might be their biggest get yet and one that makes their future even more interesting (and viable?). Reno 911!’s Robert Ben Garant, Thomas Lennon, and Kerri Kenney-Silver are set to return both as writers and cast members and perhaps what was born as a parody of the long-running reality series Cops very well might translate from half hour episodic to short form.

We’ll all just have to wait and see how this plays out when Quibi officially arrives as a streaming service, but, again, they’re doing a pretty job of keeping people curious and talking about them thus far.

We’re not exactly sure what’s going to happen here, but, then again, that is the magic and wonder that is the absurdist experimental comedy offered up humbly by Kyle Mizono and Anna Seregina.

There will be some holiday surprises, guests, but, apparently, you’ve got to stand at the door? Again, it’s a little vague as to what that will be, but we trust in Kyle and Anna to make the best immersive holiday comedy experience with whatever secret plans they have in store for us all.

The mystery of Come Home for the Holidays with Kyle and Anna but Please Stand at the Door at Lyric Hyperion next weekend will probably rival the mystery of opening up any holiday gift.

So, go get your tickets already.

Gareth Reynolds’ Riddled With Disease Is the Sort of Terrific Album You’d Expect from The Dollop Co-Host

Truly, it shouldn’t come as any surprise that the co-host of The Dollop, the amazing biweekly American history podcast (and one of our all-time favorites) with Dave Anthony and Gareth, would put out a proper comedy album that offers a very satisfying, very funny listen.

Gareth Reynolds’ debut album “Riddled With Disease” delivers on that notion and showcases what Reynolds’ cherished commentary, riffs, and act-outs on an ep. of The Dollop would be like if applied to his own life. There is a spirited bounce and a great deal of play in every tale and premise, but it’s all very sharply observed and carefully constructed. Simply put, Gareth is just a pure delight to listen to, no matter what he’s talking about (and Riddled with Disease spans a whole range from his cat, Jose, to the overarching topic of racism) and this album is proof of that. In fact, you don’t even need to know who Foghat is to enjoy his Foghat story.

So, please, please, please go get and enjoy Gareth Reynolds’ Riddled with Disease from Comedy Dynamics here.

For decades, a BBC interviewer by the name of Alan Yentob has been interviewing/playing along with the masterful shenanigans of the brilliant, truly legendary Mel Brooks.

This mockumentary comedy special spans generations all the way up to present day Mel Brooks who still seems just as sharp as ever (no matter what your age is when taking in his work).

We can’t wait to see what Brooks and Yentob had hidden up their collective sleeves for all these years (must be pretty big sleeves, right?)  with Mel Brooks: Unwrapped coming to HBO next Friday, Dec. 13th.

HBO Max Announces Stand-Up Specials from Tracy Morgan, John Early, Rose Matafeo, and Ahir Shah

HBO Max Announces Stand-Up Specials from Tracy Morgan, John Early, Rose Matafeo, and Ahir Shah

Well, well, well.

As Netflix announced today that it beat out HBO to keep Ali Wong in the fold, HBO swings back with their own exclusive stand-up special offerings that will be coming to their streaming service HBO Max next year. It’s a pretty intriguing slate thus far that includes comedy superstar Tracy Morgan, comedy star on-the-rise John Early, New Zealand comedy star making-her-way-stateside Rose Matafeo, and up-and-coming political English comedy star Ahir Shah.

We were actually wondering what would happen to this sort of segment in stand-up comedy as Netflix is currently in the business of doling out hours for comedy’s biggest stars and then giving who they think are up-and-comers (but are somewhat established, certainly enough for an hour special) 30 min. or 15 min. specials. Our hunch was that Amazon and other streaming services/networks like HBO Max would fill in this niche and it is certainly coming to pass. Amazon’s already put out hours from Alice Wetterlund and I Mom So Hard and, from the looks of this announcement, HBO is getting in while the getting is good.

Ali Wong Will Stay at Netflix for Her Next Two Specials

Ali Wong Will Stay at Netflix for Her Next Two Specials

Apparently, HBO had their sights set on Ali Wong, who shot to fame with two Netflix specials Baby Cobra and Hard Knock Wife, in the ongoing war for comedy prestige with Netflix.

Yet, Netflix prevailed, presumably as they were going to dole out more cash (and we wouldn’t be more surprised if they’ve got some other lovely things lined-up for Wong).

In any case, this means that we all will be getting an Ali Wong special next year and another one in the perhaps not so distant future after that.

What lies in the future between the big players in the comedy special space? It has yet to be seen, but bidding wars will probably get fiercer as networks and streaming services amasses war chests of exclusive comedy specials.

NYC’s Doug Smith serves up a terrific debut album here with Barely Regal. Smith has carved out his place in NYC comedy as a stand-up and co-created one of favorite things awhile ago in the experimental stand-up show, See You in Hell.

There seems to be a very classic feel to Barely Regal with Doug’s myriad of stories and observations of his life and straightforward, low key delivery. Also, Smith’s debut album still feels current, modern, and relevant as he makes that “classic feel” work for these times that we live in. There is an undeniable earnestness throughout this hour and careful, pinpoint consideration as to where get silly (including his amazing This Is Not Happening story included at the end).

So, please go get and enjoy Barely Regal, out now from 800 Pound Gorilla Records., here.

Originally, just a rapper, Awkwafina/Nora Lum has now expanded her reach into starring in movies (Ocean’s 8, The Farewell), both in comedy and drama, and, as of Jan. 22nd, leading off her own semi-autobiographical TV series about growing up in NYC as the one and only Awkwafina.

From the looks of it, not only is this Awkwafina maintaining a wide acting range, furthering her star power, and offering up something that looks pretty enticing to us, but it also seems as Comedy Central has the perfect series to follow-up Broad City with.

Take a look for yourself with the Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens trailer here, then look for the series premiere on Comedy Central on Wed. Jan. 22nd.
