Katie Hannigan’s Exuberance Is Undeniable in Her Late Night Debut

August 3, 2018

Coming fresh off of being an unrepped New Face at JFL Montreal, Katie Hannigan shows Colbert’s crowd at The Late Show what a handful of industry folks got to see just a week or so before.

She has such a magnetic persona and delivery that contrasts perfectly with her material about her life, making it a real joy to watch this late night debut.

See the set for yourself here.

Rather than wait for comedy folks to make fun of a bad movie that finds its way to your local multiplex, come watch them dream up something that’s so bad that it’s funny (and, of course, subsequently reveling in how bad/stereotypical/derivative/hack it is) at the new live comedy show Setflix.

Looking at this line-up, which includes a longtime member of Screen Junkies and a co-host of The Bechdel Cast along with a co-host of The Simpsons podcast Everything’s Coming Up Podcast, we’re pretty sure you going to hear some “best/worst” movie pitches.

Setflix will happen at Dynasty Typewriter on Wednesday, August 15th at 8PM. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at door. Get them in advance here.

Big Adventure Festival Looks to Pack as Much as It Can (Including Comedy) to One Weekend

From the looks of it, Alt 98.7′s Big Adventure Fest, coming to Costa Mesa this November, will have shades of Clusterfest, Coachella, Comic-Con, and E3 all in one weekend.

It sounds ambitious, but their line-up seems pretty solid (as you can see above). For comedy, having the likes of Patton Oswalt, Jim Jefferies, Maria Bamford, Hari Kondabolu, Kristen Schaal, and Emo Philips down in Orange County sounds pretty fantastic.

They have yet to announce podcasts and other treats. So, with early bird passes being $39.50 + fees (single day) $69.50 + fees (weekend), it sounds like a pretty good deal to us.

Get more details and passes here.

Hulu’s Latest Comedy Will Be “Shrill” Starring Aidy Bryant and Based on Lindy West Book

Hulu gave a straight-to-series order for this adaptation of Lindy West’s memoir, Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman and will join Future Man and Ramy as Hulu’s original comedy line-up.

If you take a look at Hulu’s original comedies, you’ve got to appreciate their dedication to high-concept single camera comedies often starring women, especially given how selective they’ve been compared to their competition.

By the way, Bryant will play the lead, Annie, based on Lindy and also stay on at SNL, which we’re sure answers the wishes of many.

Lisa Best is a terrific comedian whose name you should definitely get familiar with and also had a lovely late night debut on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

On top of that, she made a great case, during her set, for understanding and empathisizing the B (for bisexual) in LGBTQIA+ more than the general public probably does currently.

Paul Isakson and Tom Kauffman as well as director Danny Jelinek have been responsible for some of the best stuff on Channel 101 over the years (including Everything, Sex Teenagers).

Now, they’ve got a full fledged TV pilot in the form of an Adult Swim TV special called Art Prison. Of course, it’s a show about a prison specifically designed for artists.

It’s wonderfully ridiculous, meta, and so damn funny as well as tangentially commenting on art, art criticism, the prison industrial complex, storytelling etc. Also, if you’re a big fan of Fresh Off the Boat’s Randall Park, he’s playing the lead by the way.

So, give it a watch and enjoy on AdultSwim.com here.

Knowing the wide, wide appeal of Nate Bargatze’s laid-back keen observations on life (you should watch/listen to everything Nate Bargatze’s done if you’re not familiar by the way) and the keen sense of Jerrod Carmichael’s writing/producing, we wouldn’t be surprised if this show gets and maintains the sort of success that ABC was hoping for when rebooting Roseanne.

After docs on Garry Shandling and Robin Williams, the latest documentary that will dive deep into the life of a comedian that brought joy to so many will be Love, Gilda (directed Lisa D’Apolito) following the one and only Gilda Radner.

There will be, of course, plenty of talking head interviews (that include Lorne Michaels, Martin Short, and more) as well as a collection of various media from Gilda’s personal life showcasing her rise to one of SNL’s first legitimate stars. An intriguing part of the doc will be Radner’s words from her diaries being read from the likes of Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Cecily Strong.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for Love, Gilda in theaters starting Friday, September 21st.

Podcast veterans Amanda Lund and Maria Blasucci (that includes Trading Movies, The Big Ones, and The Complete Woman) with accomplished entertainment behind-the-scenes multi-hyphenate Priyanka Mattoo are looking to start, as mentioned above, a podcast network by women for everyone called Earios.

The aim of Earios is to provide a greater platform for female voices under the umbrella of full scale podcast network and like the plethora of famous folks they have in their delightful campaign video, we’re also think you should support their Kickstarter to launch the network.

As of this post, they’ve raised $13,626 of the $25K goal and they have just under a month left to get it funded.

Oh, some of the rewards, which include having podcast star Matt Gourley on your podcast as a guest and developing your podcast, are pretty sweet.

So, get more details and back Earios here.
