That’s right. This show is stand-up comedy completely in complete darkness. If you’ve never experienced such a thing before, it’s pretty trippy, and, for this show, you’ll be in the hands of a great line-up.

Also, we should point out that this show, done in pitch black darkness, has a comedian named Steven King on it (sure, it’s spelled differently than the author, but it’s still a cool, novelty selling point anyway).

You can (and should) get your tickets here.

Throwing Shade, the popular podcast and TV series as opposed to just the act, are adding a documentary following a recent live tour that they embarked across North America.

The hosts, Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi, are the driving force behind Throwing Shade’s success. As such, catching them on and off stage is worth a whole documentary from director Michael Blieden.

Get a taste of what that’s like (as well as what it’s like to tour as a podcast these days) in this trailer.

Then, look for Throwing Shade Live to stream on Vimeo-on-Demand for $2.99 this Thursday, June 8th.

Roy Wood Jr. to Replace Ari Shaffir as Host of This Is Not Happening

This means we’ll get to see at least a half hour’s worth of stories from Roy Wood Jr. and we think that’s a pretty great selling point for this latest season of Comedy Central’s storytelling show, This Is Not Happening.

Simone Giertz, Queen of Sh*tty Robots, Makes a Portable Mattress That Allows You to Sleep Wherever Whenever

Don’t be surprised if Simone Giertz ends up a MacArthur Genius Grant a few years down the road.

For our money, making a mattress that is not only portable, but allows you to sleep wherever you want, whenever you want all the time, and function somewhat as a snuggie might make her a dark horse candidate for such a thing.

OK, maybe you couldn’t nap in or near a volcano with this, but pretty much anywhere else is good.

See this creation, which actually, in our opinion, functions pretty well as opposed to the sh*tty robots of her past, in action here.

There are many comedies following the trials and tribulations of a relationship. Off the top of our head, we can’t think of one that involves the couple whose love is in question forming a three piece rock band as a solution.

Zoe Lister-Jones wrote, directed, and co-starred in this nifty take on a romantic comedy entitled Band-Aid.

See what we’re talking about in this trailer.

It’s in theaters in limited release right now as well as available on VOD.

Also, as an added bonus, Fred Armisen is an unassuming neighbor that plays the drums.

Broad City Season 4 Trailer Hints at One Heck of a Season 4

From the looks of it, the adventures of Abbi and Ilana will be bigger than ever in this new season, but the chemistry of their friendship, arguably the unshakeable core foundation of the entire series, remains intact. For Broad City, we have no doubt that fans will watch dozens more episodes that would undoubtedly continue to be delightful.

See for yourself in the season 4 trailer of Broad City here, then look for the season premiere on Wednesday, August 23rd on Comedy Central.

Watch This Beautiful Mini Doc “Class Clown” on How Comedians Like Billy Bonnell Take Their Tragic Childhoods and Make It Part of Their Comedy

June 4, 2017
Uncategorized

The notion of a dark past feeding into the material of a comedian is such well-trodden territory that the nuances and specifics of it are now often overlooked. It’s easy to say that comedians are, in some way, broken (that’s not always true by the way), but their singular experiences paint their persona, delivery, perspective in subtle, yet very powerful ways.

Billy Bonnell, who is now a local LA comedian, had a particularly dark childhood and this touching mini documentary, Class Clown, made by filmmaker Nick Cavalier, shows how Billy specifically dealt with that pain and channeled it through to his comedy, which we happen to enjoy.

Please watch it here.

You Can Watch the Premiere of “i’m Dying up here” Tonight or Right Now

Showtime is really putting a lot of chips down for the latest series, a dramatic look at the 70s LA comedy scene, i’m Dying up here. It was much different golden era of comedy with comedy clubs being kingdoms of their own, making for the compelling book of the same name by William Knoedelseder.

Actual present day comedians Al Madrigal, Jon Daly, Andrew Santino, Erik Griffin comprise a very impressive cast next to Melissa Leo, Sebastian Stan, Ari Graynor, Clark Duke, RJ Cyler, and Michael Angarano.

Also, the one and only Jim Carrey is an EP and writer of this David Flebotte created show that is loosely based on that LA comedy of yesterday.

The series premiere is tonight at 10PM on Showtime. If you don’t have Showtime, the premium cable network was nice enough to put the whole damn premiere episode, ahead of the premiere, on YouTube for free.

For those looking for any bit of positivity in the world these days, you might enjoy a competitive comedy show where all involved try to out-compliment each other.

Boast Rattle acts like an antithesis, even in name, to the phenomenon Roast Battle and definitely takes your mom’s advice of “if you have nothing nice to say, then don’t say it” to heart.

Also, regardless of the compliments that will be hurled at one another, the line-up is stellar as well.

Tickets are $10 and you can (and should) get them here.

Both Joe Mande and Rory Scovel are two great comedians of this current golden age of comedy that are deserving of their upcoming Netflix comedy specials that arrive this month and next.

Also, we just love the juxtaposition of the titles of their specials and how much of a goofy range it covers.

Oh, in case it wasn’t clear, mark these dates down as Joe and Rory’s new hour will definitely be worth watching.

It would seem anthology series have never been more popular than they are now and The Duplass Brothers are going to take their crack at it with Room 104 on HBO.

The show, which seems to have some hints of Twin Peaks, is centered through one, supposedly average motel room following several different characters and their offbeat lives. Get a taste of it with this very first teaser.

Look for the premiere of Room 104 on Friday, July 28th at 11:30PM on HBO.
