We’d love to make a Comedy Bureau app, a NYC branch of TCB, and more. Make that happen by pledging $ on our Patreon

Really, on top of being able to streamline our operation for Los Angeles to be its best self, we could also go global (i.e. have a Comedy Bureau for the UK, India, etc.) if we got enough money through Patreon.

Richard Linklater’s Next Film Will Be Adapted from Maria Semple’s “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” Starring Cate Blanchett

Richard Linklater’s Next Film Will Be Adapted from Maria Semple’s “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” Starring Cate Blanchett

Following up Everybody Wants Some, Linklater’s next work will continue his thematic focus on the transitioning between stages of life on how complex and, often, funny they can be.

This time, however, the Maria Semple novel he’s adapting from centers around a fiercely independent architect and mother that goes missing all of sudden. With Blanchett starring as the titular Bernadette (as well as a supporting cast of Kristen Wiig, Billy Crudup, and Judy Greer) and Linklater at the helm, we trust that this will undoubtedly be something to look out for.

Judd Apatow to Tape a Stand Up Special at JFL Montreal

Before he became a big time writer/director/producer, Judd Apatow had enveloped himself in comedy through stand-up. It makes sense for someone who was one of the biggest comedy nerds ever (he scored interviews with the biggest comedians of his time while he was in high school) well before podcasts or YouTube was around.

Having gotten tapped for writing and producing gigs like The Larry Sanders Show, Apatow’s stand-up then rested on the backburner for several years.

After carving out a niche as a Hollywood power player, especially in regards to comedy, Apatow returned to stand-up a few years ago, performing regularly all throughout LA’s most respected venues (Largo, Improv, etc.).

So, as he has a comedy series on Netflix, Love, he has been sharpening his stand-up over the last few years, and Netflix loves making big time comedy specials now, this special was inevitable.

If you like to see it live, it tapes at JFL Montreal on July 24th.

One of Our Favorite Venues in LA, The Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe, Needs Help Via Indiegogo

We spend a good deal of time at The Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe as some of the best, most innovative shows in town often happen there (Dr. Brown, Natalie Palamides, Modern Vaudeville, Feel Good Podcast, Underbelly, etc.) as well as a healthy round of open mics that have really fostered a community within theater itself.

Recently, they’re in urgent need of repairs to the theater and are crowdfunding in order to cover the cost of said repairs.

Please consider helping them so they can continue putting on their amazing shows and continue to grow.

The Daily Show’s “Donald J. Trump Presidential Twitter Library” Pop-Up Exhibition Happening This Weekend in NYC

This weekend, a whole pop-up museum dedicated to examining POTUS’ Twitter account will open in NYC thanks to The Daily Show at 3 West 57th Street near Fifth Avenue.

You’ll be able to tweet from a golden toilet, watch a montage of what Trump thinks is “Sad!”, hear stories of people who got into a Twitter fight with Trump, and other such exhibits that would normally exist in museum, but focused completely on @realdonaldtrump on Twitter. While this is all done in the name of continuing to send up Trump and the absurdity of his administration, his tweets are, unfortunately, are and will forever be important to the historical record.

You’ll be able to check it out, free of charge, from 11AM-7PM, Friday, June 16th-Sunday, June 18th.

‘Broad City’ Will Bleep Every Mention of Donald Trump’s Name for Season 4

‘Broad City’ Will Bleep Every Mention of Donald Trump’s Name for Season 4

According to a recent USA Today interview, Ilana Glazer says that every time they mention Trump’s name in season 4 of Broad City, it’ll be bleeped just like the myriad of graphic language that is flagged by Standards and Practices or like the recurring Unnecessary Censorship segment on Kimmel or even, in a way, be regarded like the name Voldemort.

It wouldn’t be hard to imagine that every mention of Trump’s name on Broad City is probably surrounded with actual expletives as well.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to Return for a 4th Season at Netflix

If The Get Down and Sense 8 getting the ax over at Netflix had you worried about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (though with the show’s individual success, we’re confident that you probably weren’t all that worried), fret not.

A season 4 just got the greenlight at the streaming service giant and the most cheery color palate in comedy will continue for at least a couple more years.

Dave Chappelle Will Be Doing Another Residency at Radio City Music Hall Featuring The Roots, Chris Rock, Trevor Noah, Ali Wong, Erykah Badu, and Childish Gambino

In 2014, Dave Chappelle did a whole run of shows at the legendary Radio City Music Hall featuring guests like The Roots.

That seemed to go pretty well.

So, Dave is doing it again this August with plenty of the aforementioned big name guests. Tickets for this residency will go on sale this Friday.

Just in case you weren’t aware, The Comedy Bureau has been solely run by me, Jake Kroeger, for nearly 7 years. I’ve loved serving both LA and comedy that whole time. Though I’ve gotten side gigs in this past, the Bureau takes up most of my time (i.e. it turns out that it’s a full time job running a whole agency by yourself) even though that has proven to be an ill advised idea financially time and time again (i.e. I make almost no money doing it and continue to live with my folks). Through monthly $ pledges on Patreon, I could have this be a sustainable public service that wouldn’t ever have to end. The more I get, the better The Comedy Bureau can be as well (app, NYC branch, etc. etc.). So, with all of that said, please support The Comedy Bureau on Patreon.

Alamo Drafthouse Is Officially and Finally Coming to DTLA in 2018

Alamo Drafthouse Is Officially and Finally Coming to DTLA in 2018

Of the indie/arthouse theater chains around, the Alamo Drafthouse has seen success where many others have struggled. Moving to LA was part of a nationwide expansion enacted over the last few years due to their popularity in their original locations.

Though a ballpark timeframe for when Los Angeles would get its very own Alamo Drafthouse has been foggy for quite some time now, 2018 is the target for when Alamo Drafthouse will join the shopping/dining/working complex known as The Bloc in DTLA’s Financial District.

As Sundance Sunset Cinemas was recently given up to AMC, this announcement couldn’t come any sooner as you’ll now have an indie theater on the Eastside of town to watch those darling indie comedies and dramedies rather than hustling over to any of the ArcLights or The Landmark in West LA.

Also, Alamo Drafthouse does happen to have some of the best introductory videos that warn to not talk or text that get updated quite often as opposed to by the decade like most other theaters.

Will Arnett Says ‘Arrested Development’ Season 5 Will Be Much More Like the Original

Rather than trying to plan around shooting schedules and piecing together multiple storylines from multiple characters, there will be more of the Bluths coming together in the upcoming season of Arrested Development.

So, someone’s wishes (probably a lot of people’s) have been answered.

We’ll see how much season 5 will harken back to some of the best seasons of televised comedy, hopefully, not to far from now.
