Russell Howard to Shoot Netflix Special During Final Leg of His International Tour

It’s about time that Russell Howard got a U.S. distributed comedy special.

This latest tour he went on was truly international and one of the biggest we’ve heard of in recent memory (maybe only Weird Al’s last tour was as big or bigger?) as Howard went all around and sold out shows in the UK, the U.S., U.A.E., Sweden, Norway, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Australia, and Canada.

In any case, Howard and his comedy are a charming whirlwind and will hopefully get a bit more notoriety in the States soon.

ESPN8 The Ocho To Be Real for One Day

One of the best jokes from the 2004 film, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, is the fictional offshoot network, ESPN8 “The Ocho” that reports and features the more “odd” sporting endeavors.

Next week, on 8/8, The Ocho will be real, taking the place of ESPNU, and feature ESPN coverage of “The 2016 American Disc Golf Championship” and “…roller derby, trampoline dodgeball, kabaddi and the 2017 Championship of Bags”.

Given all that HBO has done with comedy sports special like Tour De Pharmacy, 7 Days in Hell, and Ferrell Takes the Field, it’s about time ESPN stepped up to the plate to make fun of themselves.

Listen to Full Audio of Andy Kindler’s JFL 2017 State of the Industry Address

In case you don’t know, Andy Kindler does a new hour every year roasting the whole industry of comedy at the JFL Montreal Comedy Festival.

It’s a time honored tradition and required listening. It is “Inside Baseball”, even by comedy nerd standards, but looking up references is kind of worth it for Kindler’s pointed, yet rambunctious dressing down of all of comedy.

Also, if you’re curious about the feud between Kindler and Gervais, it’s a main focus of this particular State of the Industry Address.

CBS All Access Picks Up “No Activity”, a Drug Cartel Comedy from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay to Series

CBS All Access Picks Up “No Activity”, a Drug Cartel Comedy from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay to Series

What seems fun about this series, based on the Aussie series of the same name, is that it takes the dynamic of a “buddy cop comedy” to the next level.

No Activity specifically “…follows two low-level cops who have spent too much time in a car together; two criminals who are kept in the dark; two dispatch workers who haven’t clicked; and two Mexican tunnelers who are in too small a space considering they’ve only just met.” It’s a buddy comedy on all sides of the law.

Ferrell and McKay’s Gary Sanchez and Funny or Die will be producing it with CBS to be seen on CBS’ digital platform, CBS All Access.

Since it’s a digital series and has a Ferrell and McKay stamp on it and the original Aussie star Patrick Brammall is starring in this American version, we are crossing our fingers that this will get to seem less like the multicam sitcom fare that represents most of CBS’ comedy brand and that another original cast member, the amazing Sam Simmons will be brought on as well.

Here’s How to Watch This Upcoming, Completely Live Season of The Chris Gethard Show

Here’s How to Watch This Upcoming, Completely Live Season of The Chris Gethard Show

To the best of their ability, The Chris Gethard Show crew wants to make sure as many people around the U.S. can tune into the completely and totally live broadcast of their third season on TruTV. Unlike SNL being on NBC, it’s a little trickier to have broadcast a show live on air on a cable network.

So, they made this guide to cable and non-cable, East Coast, non-East Coast, and live audiences so you can catch the happy madness go down with the rest of the Gethard faithful.

Basically, this is how it will work:

  • US East Coast viewers with a cable subscription that includes truTV can watch live as it airs.
  • US Non-East Coast viewers with a cable subscription that includes truTV can watch live on the website or through the app.
  • Non-cable subscribers can watch live through Sling TV, Hulu with Live TV, Direct Now and Playstation Vue.
  • Come to a taping! The show films in midtown Manhattan at 11PM on Thursdays. Ticket requests for each week will go live 8 days before the episode airs, and can be found here.

For international viewers that want to watch, they’re working on it.

Oh, most importantly, remember that this season 3 premiere will air live on Thursday, August 3rd 11PM EST/8PM PST.

IFC Reveals 11 Shows in Their 2018 Development Slate

With Portlandia coming to a close relatively soon, IFC casted a wide net to find their next scripted hit.

Nearly all these shows are high concept and include such intriguing elements as a “botched cyborg”, a kill list, a struggling dominatrix, West African charities that have gotten out of hand, and rigging an election.

Attached to these projects are the talents of Gabe Delahaye, Josh Ruben, Emily Flake, Elna Baker, Jocelyn DeBoer/Dawn Luebbe, Matteo Lane, and more.

Some of these shows have script orders while others are just incubating in IFC’s Comedy Crib initiative. In any case, IFC has a lot on their plate, especially for a cable network.

With all of this in mind, don’t be surprised if you see a much different looking IFC with a bunch of new shows in the next year or two.

@KathyGriffin: “TODAY. The @AP has to clarify. I am no longer under federal investigation. The case is closed, I have been completely exonerated. Finally.”

Phew.

After a, frankly, unnecessary federal investigation stemming from the controversial photo that had TV star/comedian Kathy Griffin holding a representation of Trump’s head, she is now free and clear.

Freedom of speech feels just an iota more protected and that’s one less distraction from everything the Trump Administration is actually up to right now.

Sarah Silverman Wants to Connect with Un-Like-Minded People in Her Topical Hulu Show “I Love You, America”

Commenting on the upcoming show at the TCAs today, Silverman wants to make a point of trying to engage and connect with people that aren’t anywhere near her perspective, ideologies, and attitudes.

While other shows in late night do try that approach from time-to-time, it would seem that they will be a central tenet of “I Love You, America”.

Silverman might just pull off what Russell Brand’s Brand X ultimately could not if executed correctly.

Joe Mande and Super Deluxe Are Developing a Joanne the Scammer TV Show

Branden Miller, better known as Joanne The Scammer, has made quite the ruckus with the marvelously infamous character online and will now, apparently, be getting a chance to possibly do a TV show.

Miller won’t be alone in trying to have a Joanne The Scammer TV series though as the very accomplished TV writer/comedian Joe Mande and the creative team at Super Deluxe are on board, helping shape the project before it makes the rounds to potentially get bought up.

In the meantime, you can go down a rabbit hole where this all might have started on Joanne the Scammer’s Instagram here.

Colbert’s Cartoon Trump to Get Its Own Show on Showtime

As a sitting U.S. President, Trump might just have broken new ground by provoking two major cable TV networks to order series that portray a clearly negative version of him even though he’s the lead character. We’re pretty sure that has never happened to any other U.S. President.

Yet, The President Show on Comedy Central and this newly ordered ‘Cartoon Trump’ spin-off from The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s Cartoon Trump segments on Showtime furthers Trump being in a class that’s all his own.

Both Colbert and Late Show’s Chris Licht will be helming the project.

TBS Renews Angie Tribeca for 4th Season

We’re thrilled to see that the Carells’ Angie Tribeca will be still proudly holding the torch for unapologetically silly comedy in a television landscape full of dramedy and dark comedy for another year.

FYI, this 10-episode, 4th season is slated to come around next year on TBS.

Funny or Die’s “Pitch” App Aims to Streamline Making Money and Moving Up in Comedy Writing

Basically, Matt Klinman, Pitch’s creator, has made a sort of digital writers room for specific topics, ad campaigns, etc. where, if invited, you stand to possibly make money from writing jokes, humorous copy, and the like based on the performance (i.e. likes) of whatever you write.

The app will launch at JFL Montreal this weekend and is, again, invite only.

However, we’re thoroughly intrigued to see where this might go and how it possibly might provide a path to those who follow the writing path in comedy. If you can get in on “Pitch” somehow, you might want to try it out.

A Score and 1 Year Later, Jon Stewart Lines Up His Next Two Stand-Up Specials at HBO

If you listen closely, you can hear the giant sigh of relief from HBO as these are two big time comedy specials that didn’t go to Netflix.

Before his stint in changing comedy, late night, television, and the entertainment landscape in general at The Daily Show, Jon Stewart made his name through doing stand-up comedy. He had specials, his last one being from HBO 21 years ago, under his belt. Being the host and face of The Daily Show for all those year just took time away from him getting up on a mic regularly.

His animated project at HBO didn’t quite work out, but we are more than happy to see a Jon Stewart comedy special or two (or three if you count him hosting another round of Night of Too Many Stars) in the not so distant future.

Bob’s Burgers Season 8 to Have Very First Holiday Special and a Completely Fan Drawn Episode for the Premiere

Announced at Comic Con this past weekend, Loren Bouchard and company have even more fun than usual planned for the latest season of Bob’s Burgers. It’s kind of surprising to think that they haven’t done a holiday special yet, but it’s crazier to think that they’ll kick off season 8 with a crowdsourced episode.

Look for this new Bob’s Burgers to start on Sunday, October 1st on Fox.
