Pick of the Day: 2023 Vulture Festival (in LA) 11/12 & 11/13

October 17, 2023
News

November is approaching fast, which means Vulture is coming to LA. Thankfully, that’s not anything resembling the CA state bird, the California Condor, circling its prey. Instead, it’s a highly curated gathering of the most chic happenings possible via NY Magazine’s cool arm (including a live Comedians You Should & Will Know showcase).

Vulture Festival is coming back to Hollywood once again on Sat. Nov. 12th and Sun. 13th, but taking over a new location, nya Studios, which actually puts its squarely in the “Netflix Valley” of Hollywood (which means you’ll probably still see a picket line if the SAG-AFTRA strike isn’t over in another month).

So far, they’ve announced:

Weird Al Superlatives Live!

Matt Rogers Holiday Spectacular Sing-a-Long Extravaganza (Album Version)

A Big Long Talk With Cord Jefferson (writer/director of what will likely be the end of the year comedy hit, American Fiction)

An Intimate Evening with Adam Pally

That’s just a taste of what’s to come.

Tickets are only $25-$30 per show and you can (and very much should) go snag tix here, before they sell out (Vulture tends to sell out their events).

TCB Debriefing 10/3/23: Blake Wexler Special, Nateland, Only Murders in the Building, Mulaney, CYSWK

1. If absence makes the heart grow fonder, Blake Wexler’s pandemic fueled exodus from LA back to Philly, then releasing a humdinger of a comedy special makes our hearts here at TCB flutter. Daddy Long Legs is the debut hour special from Wexler and Blake makes the sort of first grand impression with a special that one could hope for their very first hour. Taking cues from mentor Todd Glass, Blake is an agile balance of silly and sincere and exuberant and nuanced. He doesn’t so much navigates through this hour as he jubilantly flies through it and it’s quite the ride he takes you on. Please enjoy Daddy Long Legs streaming now, for free, on YouTube, courtesy of 800 Pound Gorilla, here.

2. Nate Bargatze has added entertainment mogul to his resume with the official unveiling of his content company Nateland (Deadline). Though it’s focused on “family friendly” fare, amazing specials from Joe Zimmerman and Greg Warren produced by Nateland suggest that there is plenty to be enjoyed by adults who hate “family friendly” content.

3. Only Murders in the Building will get a fourth season, which means comedy/banjo legend Steve Martin will stay in the realm of comedy for a little longer, thank goodness.

4. John Mulaney just announced dates for a national tour running through all of November and December. If you want tickets, you better go to johnmulaney.com right now before they all sell out.

5. Vulture’s 2023 class of Comedians You Should & Will Know was finally unveiled yesterday and, in case you didn’t already know, we have something to do with it. Please go enjoy what might be the most fairly run list (we run it kind of like the MacArthur Genius Grant) of “who’s next/who to watch” in all of comedy.

6. We’ll leave you with this: if you’re wondering how commonplace parallel thought is in comedy, late night had five months off due to the WGA Strike and still managed to land many of the same jokes about the same news items on their first night back.

Pick of the Day: Good One Live! with Jesse David Fox (in NYC) 3/17

Process.

It’s one of the most mysterious and elusive elements in the art form of comedy. Trying to decipher an individual comedian’s process might actually be harder than making a room full of strangers laugh. That said, Jesse David Fox has done tremendous work in uncovering how comedians actually do their work and pull off that magic that is making people laugh with his long running podcast, Good One.

Fox is doing a special edition of the podcast that will show off his expertise in front of a live audience at Union Hall on Fri. Mar. 17th at 7PM. Phoebe Robinson, StraightioLab, Marcia Belsky, Francesca D’Uva, and possibly more will do short sets followed by an in-depth interview about said set.

It ought to be something special as you’ll get an in-real-time, up-close-and-personal look at exactly how some of NYC’s funniest do what they do best.

Tickets are $18.98. Go get them now before they probably sell out here.

Pick of the Day: Vulture x Union Hall: Pretty Major (Tuesdays in NYC) 9/14

The importance of a stalwart, landmark weekly comedy show in a comedy scene is so vital. It acts as a linchpin  for the scene itself, a platform for deserving talent to brightly shine, and a very fun lab for the bunch that takes on the hallowed duties of hosting such an endeavor. Names such as The Meltdown, Butterboy, Comedy at the Knit, Hot Tub, and Put Your Hands Together might come to mind in this regard (feel free take a moment to get nostalgic about any and all of those shows if you were ever in attendance).

Vulture is now looking to join those ranks by embarking their very own curated weekly live comedy show Pretty Major at the revered Brooklyn stage that is Union Hall every Tuesday at 7PM ET, starting on Sept. 14th. A fantastic cadre of Marcia Belsky, Jay Jurden, and Zach Zimmerman will be presiding over as hosts and, already, we have a pretty good feeling about this.

Just look at the month of line-ups they’ve announced and you’ll know you’re in for a treat of their favorites of the best of NYC comedy.

9/14: Please Don’t Destroy, Taylor Garron, Kylie Brakeman, Sydnee Washington, Francesca D’Uva, and more!

9/21: Jaye McBride, Larry Owens, Jes Tom, Devon Walker, and more!

9/28: Catherine Cohen, Nore Davis, Fareeha Khan, Mary Neely, Martin Urbano, and more!

10/5: Zack Zucker, Spike Einbinder, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Chris Gethard, and more!

Tickets are only $12 and you can (and really, really should) go get them here. They’ll likely sell out pretty quick.

FYI, to out of towners that Vulture’s own Jesse David Fox knows and loves:

FYI: Union Hall is handling the booking. HOWEVER, if you are an LA comedian I know and you're going to be in town or a SURPRISE DROP-IN type, please please please reach out to me. Love, Jesse https://t.co/chis8DNXkG

The annual Vulture Festival is probably one of the best collections of panels, screenings, and other strange, but splendid events with cast/creators/icons/etc. (several of whom are comedy folks) who are deep in the cultural zeitgeist (i.e. an AIM chat with PEN15 stars and co-creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle that they did last year).

So, ever the inventive festival, Vulture is going virtual with Vulture Festival: In The Nest for this year and they will feature yet another very impressive stack of live-streamed events including:

Rachel Bloom in conversation with her fifth-grade bully
Vulture Honorary Degree: Whoopi Goldberg
The Winkler Method: A Henry Winkler Acting Class
State of the Union with Samantha Bee and Rebecca Traister
Screening of HBO’s new series How To with John Wilson
A Night with The New Girl Boys

This time, we’re all blessed with not having to find parking in or around The Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood Blvd. and rushing in and around from room to room so you won’t miss too much of any one of these events.

Vulture Festival: In The Nest is set for Mon. Oct. 26th-Fri. Oct. 30th and passes are on sale now starting at $30. Go snag ’em here.

Vulture’s annual shindig, Vulture Festival is back for another round and plenty of stuff that you’ll really want to make the effort to get to the Hollywood Roosevelt for.

Their schedule already includes a Party Down reunion, a Community reunion, a Good Place panel, an AIM conversation with PEN15 creators, a MacGruber screening with live commentary from Will Forte, and a showcase of Vulture’s annual Comedians You Should and Will Know list*.

That very, very stacked schedule sounds pretty swell, right? Well, you best go get your tickets before they inevitably sell out here.

The idea that comedians and critics would debate anything is a pretty surefire to have one very, spirited, intense, hilarious conversation as it will be for Vulture/NeueHouse’s Comedians vs Critics Emmys Debate Live.

This particular line-up of Demi Adejuyigbe, Jamie Loftus, Max Silvestri and then, Jordan Crucchiola, Dave Schilling, and Bethy Squires debating the upcoming Emmys really ought to be something. Perhaps, they’ll debate the Emmys going without a host once again or egregious snubs or political grandstanding in speeches. We’re not sure what the topics will be, but it’ll be a good time for sure.

Vulture/NeueHouse’s Comedians vs Critics Emmys Debate Live will be this Wed. at the ultra chic NeueHouse and tickets are $25. Go get ‘em here.

Now, Vulture, Good One, and Jesse are doing a West Coast edition that will feature writers Jessie Gaskell, Jocelyn Richard, Danny Ricker, and Jenny Yang from Conan, I Love You America, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Busy Tonight respectively.

It’s effectively a State of Late Night discussion that you shouldn’t miss. Also, you’ll get to sneak into the exclusive NeueHouse for a night.

Vulture Presents Inside Late Night is happening next Thurs. Jun. 27th at 7PM. Tickets are $25 and you best get them here.

Better find a good way to park (or Lyft to) Hollywood Roosevelt for Sat. & Sun. Nov. 17th & Nov. 18th.

The Vulture Festival will be taking over the Roosevelt that weekend and bringing: Bitch Sesh Live, a live table read of Big Mouth, a Schitt’s Creek Holiday Spectacular, Adam Pally and Casey Wilson: An Excuse to Hang Out: An Evening of Music, Comedy, and Friendship, Busy Philipps: In Conversation, and much more!

If that peaks your interest (and we’re betting that it does), you can buy individual tickets here.

As part of a chat with Vulture, Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon, Ryan Ridley, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke (AKA cast and creators of Rick and Morty) not only improvised what a few scenes from a crossover of Rick and Morty and SpongeBob Squarepants might be like, but also got some accompanying animation to really bring it to life.

Spoiler alert, the crossover is definitely more Rick and Morty than it is SpongeBob.

Watch and enjoy here before you sit and tune into tonight’s new Rick and Morty at 11PM tonight.

With the objective of reviewing giant free-standing sculptures throughout NYC, do you think Eric Andre is just going to break down the significance and historical context in which said art was brought to the city?

Nope. He’s going to ask a bunch of strangers questions that would probably never make it into an art magazine.

As far as toeing the line of controversy in comedy goes, Jim Jefferies and Anthony Jeselnik have made very successful careers in pulling that off (even if they apparently cross it).

Their conversation, set up by Vulture, is an enlightening one that goes through their brands of comedy, mutual admiration, and how to continue to toe that controversial line.

We hope that Billy Eichner does Billy On The Street-esque bits throughout the evening, wandering throughout the audience.

As Networks and Netflix Face Off, Your Ability to TV Binge Watch Hangs in the Balance

Due to the massive success that Netflix has had, the TV landscape is changing. Network executives and studios are having to adapt to a new business model of producing and distributing shows, which has, of course, come to a head with where and how money is allocated.

As studios are fighting to own more rights to stream the shows they picked up, your getting to binge watch something like a new season of Arrested Development, Louie, etc. might be in jeopardy. Click the link for the full story at Vulture.
