TCB Debriefing 9/19/23: Dream Scenario, John Waters, Heather McMahan, Russell Brand, Among the Dead, Second City NYC, Jena Friedman

1. It seems like the Nicholas Cage from Weather Man (i.e. an entrancing balance of nuance and “going full Cage”) is back in Dream Scenario, a comedy of literal dreams, from rising star Norwegian director Kristoffer Borgli (Sick of Myself). Simply put, Cage plays a rather ordinary professor who, all of sudden, starts appearing in everyone’s dreams. If that’s not the perfect role for Cage, we don’t know what else would be. Take your first gander at Dream Scenario here.

2. When the word “cult” is being used an appreciative adjective rather than a disturbing noun, there might not be a name more synonymous with that iteration of the word than filmmaker and cultural icon, John Waters. As such, it’s about time that he got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and this week saw that momentous event come to pass. Unsurprisingly, Waters gave what very well be the best Hollywood Walk of Fame acceptance speech ever.

John Waters speaks at the unveiling of his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: "Here I am, closer to the gutter than ever!"

3. Heather McMahan will be the latest beloved, headlining comedian to go the route of self-producing their special and then Netflix buying it as Netflix announced the release of her hour Son I Never Had slated for Oct. 17th (THR). Has Netflix finally gotten closer to the bottom of what seemed like bottomless pockets?

4. With multiple investigations going into allegations of sexual assault, rape, and emotional abuse by Russell Brand, both the BBC and Channel 4 in the UK have removed all content featuring Brand (Deadline). They cited the reasoning of it “…falling below public expectations,” which makes some sort of sense since Brand never really outdid his performance in Forgetting Sarah Marshall (where he played a sex obsessed rock star, mind you).

5. The zombie film and TV subgenre is so expansive that it very well could almost be its own genre separate from horror. Case in point, there is a Japanese, English-language zombie mockumentary in the works from Japanese comedian Shinagawa Hiroshi  and writing duo Midnight Pizza called Among the Dead (Variety). Like the depictions of zombies themselves, zombie films are getting smarter and more complex.

6. Following recovery from both the pandemic and an internal reckoning that changed the entire structure and ownership of legendary comedy institution, Second City, it’s beautiful news to hear that Second City NYC will open its doors on Nov. 16th (Brooklyn Vegan). We’re even more thrilled to hear that former Asylum NYC AD, the amazing Alan Kliffer, will be their Artistic Director.

7. No one does dark humor quite like Jena Friedman, which is why you should take every opportunity to go out and see her shows. Here are four shows she’s lined up for her “Not Funny” Tour, but we won’t be surprised if more dates get added.

8. We’ll leave you with this: If you do 10,000 hours of bad stand-up, you’ll be mastered at bad stand-up.

Nick Cage Gets Meta (Even More So Than He Ever Has) for “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”

December 14, 2021
News
nicholas cage, trailer, unbearable weight of massive talent

For the last couple of decades, Nicholas Cage has built a mythos out of his outlandish performances in movies that range from awards contenders to straight-to-DVD. The movie Mandy was almost designed exclusively to have Cage to cut looser than he has ever before (and somewhat eschewed story to help achieve that goal).

So, perhaps, taking a cue from Jean Claude Van Damme and his meta-character study, JCVD, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent follows Cage being Nick Cage in taking on ludicrous gigs to pay off his ever burgeoning pile of debts, many as far out as he is (i.e. private island, dinosaur skull, etc.) and then having to be the real life version of his insane characters to pull a “real” covert operation. The lines between all the various shades of Nicholas Cage is fascinating here, especially with Nick consciously playing a supposedly farcical version of himself in this most Nick Cage of Cage vehicles from Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten.

We can only ponder what the hell promo for this is going to be like.

Dive into the Nicholas Cage themed rabbit hole of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent with the red band trailer here.

It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Nicholas Cage would do live commentary of one his movies.

However, that doesn’t seem to be on the horizon quiet yet and, in the mean time, we have something pretty damn close with Kenny Stevenson as Nic Cage doing said live commentary of Nic Cage movies.

This Sunday at UCB Sunset’s Inner Sanctum, he’ll be doing just that with The Rock along with guests (that may or may not also be in character) Josh Covitt, Marshall Givens and Jessica Jean Jardine.

Admission is FREE. Get more details for Nic Cagentary here.

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

NIcholas Cage is going to play a lone man trying to hunt down Osama Bin Laden in a film from Larry Charles, the director of Borat.

With Cage, you always wonder whether you’re going to get the Cage from Joe or The Weather Man or the Cage that populates a number of memes on the Internet, but with Charles at the helm and interest from The Weinstein Company, we’re game for One Man Army.

1) JON DALY IS… Ticklish Cage?

Ticklish Cage from Jon Daly

2) Fox pulled this segment of comedian Bob Oschack interviewing Asian USC students about the inclusion of Colorado and Utah in the newly formed PAC 12 Conference due to many in the Asian American community being deeply offended.  Apparently, Asian college students not knowing about the newest developments in collegiate level sports conferences is incredibly embarassing.  As an Asian American USC alumni, I could say that the clip isn’t all that offensive, but then again, I don’t really care about my ethnicity at all.  Also, lighten the fuck up. 3) Tonight on TV: Futurama gets their season finale in a way that they’ve never been drawn before (Comedy Central 10PM), Louie also reaches its season finale (FX 10:30PM), NTSF:SD:SUV has former Crossing Jordan star Jerry O’Connell (Adult Swim 12:15AM), and Thursdays are running out of things to watch.
