Netflix’s The Standups Gives Its First Look of Season 3

December 23, 2021
News
brian simpson, dusty slay, janelle james, mark normand, melissa villaseñor, naomi ekperigin, netflix, stand up comedy, standups

Naomi Ekperigin, Dusty Slay, Mark Normand, Melissa Villaseñor, Janelle James, and Brian Simpson make up for a well-rounded of class half-hour specials that Netflix is putting out as a way to roll into 2022. Luckily, Netflix just got these taped before Omicron took hold and all live stuff had to be put on hold for some minutes.

Who know what we’ll even look like on the other side of this particular variant of COVID-19, much less the other side of the pandemic, but we are very glad to see the likes of these six get to put out a tight new half-hour of material to a live, in-person audience. Truthfully, we’d rather see them all do an hour, but we’ll take what we can get. We have no doubt that they’ll all get to an hour if they want as they do, almost exclusively, kill it on stage.

We were fortunate enough to catch Naomi and Brian work on their particular half-hours and can confidently say that you’re in for something special and should make binging The Standups your big to-do on Dec. 29th when it streams on Netflix.

Get a taste of what’s to come with The Standups Season 3 trailer here.

Netflix Announces Latest Half Hour Specials for “The Standups”

July 7, 2021
News
brian simpson, dusty slay, janelle james, mark normand, melissa villaseñor, naomi ekperigin

The somewhat slow, yet somewhat fast return of stand-up comedy continues as we’re on this side of the pandemic. One of the markers of that is Netflix announcing its latest line-up of half-hour stand-up specials that’s still generically called, for some reason, The Standups.

For 2021, they’ve got a really good batch with Naomi Ekperigin, Melissa Villaseñor, Brian Simpson, Dusty Slay, Janelle James, and Mark Normand. All of them have had specials or have been on TV regularly (or, you know, star on SNL). Some of these folks we’ve personally seen already honing their material and it ought to be something special (especially since this will be one of the first big time specials performed, very likely, with almost no capacity or mask restrictions) All six specials will be taped soon as Netflix is planning the release of this batch of The Standups for later this year.

That means you should keep a close eye (probably through the socials of any of these comedians) on when tickets for these tapings might go up wherever that might be.

Watch Mark Normand Do a Tonight Show Set on The Staten Island Ferry

January 11, 2021
News
fallon, mark normand, stand up, tonight show

In case you didn’t know from the several months of lockdown that we’ve gone through and the several more that we will have to go through, comedy venues and live performance venues of all kinds have gone dark. What that entails from these establishments and the performers who take to their stages continues to be very uncertain.

Thus, in 2021, if you want to perform stand-up, you still have to be very outside-the-box as Mark Normand has handily done for his latest late night set on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Normand took to performing on the deck of the Staten Island Ferry, socially distant to a masked crowd in the open air as the crossed the water. It’s a far cry from the bright lights of Fallon’s studio where he tapes The Tonight Show, but that’s what we’re all afforded right now.

Of course, Normand still has a bunch of one-liners at the ready to effectively narrate the short ferry journey during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Give Mark’s set a watch here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 23: Carmen Morales & Important Distractions

To pull of a live-stream stand-up show is hard just as it. To do it consistently and charge and have a dedicated audience that’s willing to pay in an unprecedented time of economic fallout is truly amazing. That’s what Carmen Morales has done with her recurring live-stream Zoom stand-up show, Social D. Carmen zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to see how she pulled it off and really disproves that comedy is dead right now (it’s just different). Also, “hot” takes on Jim Gaffigan’s rant against the RNC and Ayo Edebiri replacing Jenny Slate as voice of Missy on Big Mouth.

You can follow Carmen at carmenmorales.com and @thefunnycarmen across socials and listen to her podcast No Sir Pod.

Mark Normand Serves Up Another Classic Late Night Set on the Tonight Show

July 17, 2018
Uncategorized

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Mark Normand’s style, writing, cadence, persona, etc. are kind of perfect for the demanding nature of doing stand-up on a late night talk show.

His tight writing, structure, and transitions (and the fact that he dons a suit) calls back to a sort of a classic tight 5 on Carson (this set just happens to be a bit over 5 min. FYI).

In any case, you should enjoy Normand’s set here.
