TCB Debriefing 10/12/23: The Curse, The Daily Show, How Did This Get Made?, Aparna Nancherla, Please Don’t Destroy, Cora Bora, Daniel Sloss

October 12, 2023
News
aparna nancherla, benny safdie, cora bora, daniel sloss, emma stone, how did this get made, late night, nathan fielder, paul scheer, please don't destroy, seth meyers, the curse, the daily show

1. If you dare (and of course you do since it’s the reason for the Halloween season), take your first full look at the meta meta meta house-flipping/docu-series/supernatural(?) thriller, The Curse with Nathan Fielder, Emma Stone, and Benny Safdie. Then, set a reminder for Nov. 10th, it’s premiere date on Showtime/Paramount+.

2. The Daily Show will be the second to last late night program to return to the air (the last one will be SNL) and has, surprise surprise, not picked a permanent replacement for Trevor Noah. Instead, they’re going with another round of revolving hosts including Michael Kosta, Desus Nice, Sarah Silverman, Charlmagne Tha God, Leslie Jones, Michelle Wolf, and The Daily Show correspondents. This all begins next week and, one hopes, they’ll get someone permanently behind the desk before the hell that will be the 2024 election gets into full swing.

4. Just a friendly neighborhood reminder of Aparna Nancherla‘s reserved comedic brilliance a la giving her depression the name “Brenda” in an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

5. The Please Don’t Destroy boys made a whole damn movie, The Treasure of Foggy Mountain, the trailer of which plays exactly like one of their sketches. Also, Conan O’Brien as Ben Marshall‘s Dad is perfect casting. See the madness in its entirety Nov. 17th on Peacock.

6.  You won’t have to wait for the next season of Hacks, whenever that’s going to happen, or rebinge The Good Place to see Meg Stalter and Manny Jacinto on screen again. Their indie comedy festival darling, Cora Bora just sold its North American distribution rights to Brainstorm Media (Variety). Hope this makes for a bright light in theatrical releases in early 2024.

7. Internationally renowned for breaking up relationships for people’s well being via his comedy, Daniel Sloss is making his latest stop in LA next week. By the way, we got tickets if you want them. Just be the first to let us know @thecomedybureau on IG.

8. We’ll leave you with this: Apologies for missing out on yesterday’s debriefing (and Monday’s even though that was technically a national holiday). Our esteemed founder Jake Kroeger is also the booker at the beloved Lyric Hyperion now and he’s getting the hang of juggling 100 balls at once (in addition to running TCB and booking a theater) .

TCB Debriefing 9/28/23: The Curse, Cam Gavinski, Late Night Returns, Big Mouth S7, Fingernails, Ziwe, Zainab Johnson, Invisible

News
airplane, big mouth, cam gavinski, fingernails, late night, the curse, zainab johnson, ziwe

1. Take your first peek at what hath Nathan Fielder, The Safdie Brothers, and Emma Stone wrought with a teaser for their “haunted” real estate series, The Curse, set to premiere on Nov. 10th Showtime/Paramount+.

2. Cam Gavinski proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the best way to break the rules in comedy is to know them with one hell of a debut special how to make everything about you forever and always. We’ll share more thoughts soon, but, for now, please enjoy a grand 90 minute, very tightly rehearsed meta comedy epic here.

3. Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Stephen Colbert are all set to return to their desks on Oct. 2nd (and effectively kick that punk Gutfeld to the curb) along with John Oliver coming in a day early on Oct. 1st with Last Week Tonight. Expect a new episode of Real Time with Bill Maher this Friday as well (Variety).

4. A “Making of Airplane!” is in the works (Deadline) and you ought to know that there will be plenty of old folks saying that they couldn’t make a movie like this today (despite the Internet being chock full of much more controversial content).

5. As October is technically the spookiest month of the year, it only makes sense that the adult animated series that simultaneously makes you burst out laughing about the most embarrassing moments of your adolescence. Get ready with this first trailer for season 7 of Big Mouth, set to premiere on Oct. 20th on Netflix.

6. Fingernails is The Office meets Black Mirror? See for yourself on Nov. 3rd on AppleTV+.

7. Unsurprisingly, tickets for Ziwe’s Black Friend Tour are selling out fast and have resulted in more dates being added. Go get your tickets at ziwe.com before you miss out and are forced to think how you would have fared on a round of Baited.

8. Zainab Johnson, who you have probably have seen on Upload, but hopefully have seen do delightful stand-up, is having her debut hour on Amazon Prime, come Oct. 24th, with the wondrous title, Hijabs Off.

9. We’ll leave you for this: Drew Carey not only covered people’s tabs at Swingers and Bob’s Big Boy for the entire duration of the WGA Strike, but included one extra day as a victory breakfast/lunch/dinner.

1. The Jimmys, John, Seth, and Stephen are banding together as Strike Force Five in order to support the staff of their late night shows, which have been the productions that have suffered the longest from the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike. Kimmel, Fallon, Oliver, Meyers, and Colbert will be doing a limited run series (though plenty of episodes should be coming out) where they chat (and will hopefully provide some sort of respite from Gutfeld! being the defacto #1 late night show on the air). Strike Force Five rolls out exclusively on Spotify starting tomorrow and proceeds from the pod go to all those late night staffers, which have all probably grown some sort of strike beard by now.

2. Rose Matafeo‘s chance encounter with celebrity romance has blossomed into one of the rom com series to watch of the moment, Starstruck. Season 3 is just around the corner (Sept. 28th) on Max and you can get your first taste here.

3. The irrefutably hilarious Jay Jurden just added more dates to his Kinda Sorta Sorta Kinda North American tour. Go get tickets before they sell out (again) here.

4. Jeymes Samuel, the director behind modern day black Western The Harder They Fall, is at it again (i.e. changing the racial narrative paradigm in genre movies) with The Book of Clarence that follows a Jesus copycat in Jesus times. It almost feels like this would have been an episode straight out of the fifth season of Atlanta (if there was one). Take your first gander at The Book of Clarence here, then look for it in theaters in 2024.

5. Per item #1, late night really does need help as they’re resorting to compilations such as “Best of SNL Writers on Seth Meyers” since they’ve been off air for so very long.

With Ziwe Being Canceled, Is Late Night Supposed To Be Mostly Just White Noise Now?

April 7, 2023
News
late night, ziwe

Earlier this week, Showtime (or rather Paramount + with Showtime’s Chris McCarthy) announced its upsetting decision to not renew the rowdy newcomer in late night, Ziwe, for another season. Unfortunately, this news leaves Amber Ruffin as the sole late night host who isn’t an old white guy (unless you want to count the new season of The Eric Andre Show as part of traditional late night). The Jimmys (Kimmel and Fallon), Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Andy Cohen, James Corden for a few more episodes, and the right-wing-provocateur-non-comedian Greg Gutfeld are all that’s left for late night at the current moment.

This doesn’t exactly paint a bright, beaming future for a long standing genre of TV that has entire Emmy categories dedicated to it. Kudos, by the way, to The Hollywood Reporter for having their headline for this new item read “Ziwe Canceled as Showtimes Orders Mandy Patinkin Comedy Seasoned“ to highlight a young black woman being kicked off a network and another old white man gets another show).

It would almost seem that the Chris McCarthys and Ted Sarandoses of the world couldn’t care less about late night given its current state. All the attempts, over the last several years, to redefine/reimagine/disrupt the original Tonight Show format laid out by its originator Steve Allen in the 1950s (because it doesn’t seem so invigorating or exciting on this side of the 21st century) are gone and, once more, we’re back to a bunch of old white guys talking to celebrities trying to convince people watch whatever they were just starring in. One by one, the late night new blood and paradigm shifters that included Desus & Mero, Lilly Singh, Samantha Bee, Hasan Minhaj, Trevor Noah, and now, Ziwe, have all closed up shop, left, stepped down, or had their show canceled. In very minuscule contrast, the only new developments in late night are that The Late Late Show might be replaced by a retooled version of @midnight, Chelsea Handler could return to late night, and The Daily Show might have an entire panel of hosts.

Brands and channels are being reshuffled due to bigger and bigger corporate mergers and streaming services increasingly becoming the dominating way to watch content. This has led to almost unprecedented level of cuts and write-offs of content in a desperate search of surefire franchises/cinematic universes/etc. Late night talk shows are certainly not immune from this and seem to be rather low in priority compared to, well, everything else that is, ironically, featured by guests on late night.

It’s at this point that one might wonder what hath the future wrought for late night talk shows. Unfortunately, there is a more pressing existential question at hand, “What’s the point of late night talk shows, especially if people aren’t largely even watching them at midnight?” A large segment of Colbert and Kimmel’s audiences don’t even watch it live at the namesake time, but rather during the day, in clip form, on YouTube. Where would James Corden be if not for the viral popularity of Carpool Karaoke? Also, the advent of podcasts make for deeper, more satisfying, more easily digestible interviews (since you can listen while doing a myriad of other things) than the heavily edited ones that air past 11PM. Additionally, the idea that an individual would watch someone like Chlöe Bailey on Fallon tonight and THEN being convinced to watch the new Little Mermaid truly seems farfetched in 2023.

Sure, but answer your question.

There is an unspoken need for the 24 hours news cycle to have some sort of sugar on it. News media continues to be hell bent on scaring us all half to death so they can win a never-ending ratings race and, as that’s the case, it’s necessary to have comedy to process that. Late night, as a genre, often fills that need in both finding the humor in the dark and simultaneously distracting us from the inherent anxiety of existing. Talking to celebrity guests and having bits sprinkled in might not be the way to accomplish that in the coming years.

It seems as though eons ago that Conan O’Brien stepped down from his tenure in late night and traded it for a podcast empire, which he seems to be having a blast with. It actually feels like the wild, anything-could-happen early days of Late Night with Conan O’Brien. The majority of the fun of Eric Andre putting the talk show format through a blender then spitting it out again is not really having any idea what’s going to happen as well. If there’s to be any future to late night talk shows, it might be prudent for the “catchy” new portmanteaus of Warner Discovery or Paramount + with Showtime to do some version of Insomniac with Dave Attell.

Know that we think about it, such a show might actually have to happen if there’s another writers’ strike.

Please Enjoy Greg Barris’ Late Night Debut on Corden

News
greg barris, james corden, late late show, late night, stand up comedy

Fresh off the release of his stellar album Deep Healing, Greg Barris is making quite the rounds with his stand-up in 2023. His self-effacing, hip charm and semi-mystical hijinks have been a personal favorite of ours for, well, as long as we’ve been around as a Bureau (nearly 13 years at this point).

So, it’s a bit of a mystery as to why Barris just notched in his first late night stand-up set last night on The Late Late Show with James Corden, but we’re glad that it happened and that Greg did one of “the hits”, a bit about his expectations of dating people of a certain name.

With all of that said, go watch and enjoy Greg’s late night debut here.

If, somehow, that isn’t the case, Dylan made a killer network TV debut doing a set on The Late Late Show with James Corden and that counts as everyone being put on notice that Dylan has arrived and deserves that pilot about him and his gay twin.

Please revel and enjoy Dylan’s set here.

Get a Tasty Preview of Sam Morrison’s Sugar Daddy from His Set on Seth Meyers

Up and coming NYC comedy star Sam Morrison has really put himself on the map with his delightful solo show about the loss of the love of his life, Sugar Daddy. He has already done a go of it at the Edinburgh Fringe and is currently in the middle of run at the SoHo Playhouse.

As if that wasn’t enough, he just got to do a bit of it on Late Night with Seth Meyers as a stand-up set for his late night network TV debut. The way that Sam Morrison specifically has woven in humor through his own grief is so full of truth-is-stranger-than-fiction sort of surprises that we’re pretty sure you’ll want to see the whole story after watching this set.

FYI, Sugar Daddy is playing at SoHo Playhouse in NYC through 2/17.

James Acaster Has a Perfect Late Night Interview on Seth Meyers

November 14, 2022
News
james acaster, late night, seth meyers

These days, the niche art of being an amazing guest on a late night talk show, a format that’s going through its own growing pains as a whole, seems all but lost. Most hosts doing the heavy lifting for folks that are there to promote something that you have already seen an ad for on YouTube or numerous billboards around wherever you live.

That said, there are usually a handful of late night interviews that recall some golden times of late night where people actually looked forward to staying up late to watch what tomfoolery folks were going to get into with Carson or Letterman (in the earlier years). UK comedian James Acaster‘s latest appearance on Seth Meyers is one such interview as he came in as succinctly silly as he could possibly be (and he didn’t even have a planned bit, which seems to be a go-to move for comedians doing panel interview these days). At every possible moment, James opted for the best comedic choice, almost as if he was playing Talk Show: The Game Show with Guy Branum.

Go see James’ lovely, hysterical interview on last week’s Late night with Seth Meyers here

Watch and Enjoy Kurt Braunohler Returning to Do Stand Up on The Tonight Show for 3rd Time

November 10, 2022
News
kurt braunohler, late night, stand up, tonight show

Stand up on late night has ticked a little closer to where it was 2019, but it’s still not a plethora of comedians that are showing off an incredibly tight 5, hoping to be called to the couch by Johnny Carson. That said, the lack of frequency makes performing on any late night show special in its own way and getting to return to the same show as a favorite to perform multiple times is even rarer accomplishment with the lack of slots going around.

So, Kurt Braunohler, fresh off the release of his latest special Perfectly Stupid, available at perfectlystupid.com, marks his 3rd set on The Tonight Show last night and delivered what we think is a classic Kurt set (some absurdly clever short jokes and examining the human condition through a ridiculous and hysterical story he went through with some perfectly chosen yelling).

Go see and enjoy it all for yourself here.

Please Enjoy All the Intersections of Sabrina Wu on Their Tonight Show Debut

News
late night, sabrina wu, stand up comedy, tonight show

While there are certain people who are going to take some time to wrap their around all the spectrums that exist for identity, it should be noted that the expanding diversity of who comedians are these days had led to many deeply funny bits that we’ve never seen before as opposed to interchangeable bits about dating or taking Lyft/Uber.

Sabrina Wu is delightful, charming proof of this as shown by their set from last night’s Tonight Show. Being Chinese, trans, queer, and pretty good at sound effects amount to a very, very strong debut late night set. Sabrina managed a pretty hilarious contrast of being deeply vulnerable and silly and wove that into every bit of every facet of their identity. It’s an indelible set of, hopefully, many more to come.

See for yourself and watch Sabrina’s Tonight Show debut here.

Ian Karmel Thanks Folks for Wedding Presents While Doing a Tight Late Night Set on Weddings

Ian Karmel is such an integral part of The Late Late Show and a force on the podcast he co-hosts, All Fantasy Everything, that you might need a reminder that Karmel is quite the hysterical stand-up comedian. That’s actually the thing that got him to elevated station he’s at now and he hasn’t lost a step while being one of the funniest co-hosts on TV and in your headphones.

This latest late night set from him on last night’s Corden is proof positive. Karmel does one of the best sets on weddings, perfectly observed and written bits sandwiched in between legitimate expressions of gratitude for wedding gifts he has received before his wedding this week.

Please enjoy his set here and make sure you take every chance you can to see Ian live.

Please Enjoy ATL’s Katherine Blanford and Her Late Night Debut on The Tonight Show

News
katherine blanford, late night, stand up comedy, tonight show

If you don’t already know about how great the comedy scene is in Atlanta, let this serve as a friendly reminder that plenty of great comedians are right there right now in addition to the wealth of headliners that come through their healthy stable of comedy clubs/theaters/venues. Both Joe Zimmerman and Andy Sandford came out of ATL and are now very solid staples of NYC’s stand-up scene.

Katherine Blanford is a shining star in Atlanta’s scene and showed exactly why, as well as repping for Atlanta comedy, on The Tonight Show last night. Blanford’s dazzling charisma, homespun, down-to-earth delivery, and her plentiful, sharply written punchlines put on quite the debut for a late night set (and we have no doubt that there will be more to come).

With that all said, please enjoy Katherine Blanford’s first Tonight Show set here.

Joe Pera Imagines a Gentler James Bond That’s Probably the Sort of Calm We Need

In anticipation of his upcoming two part nationwide tour ingeniously called “Summer in the Midwest and Rustbelt Tour” and “Fall Everywhere Else Tour”, Joe Pera went on Seth Meyers last night and showed Hollywood what they’re missing by having Joe Pera Talks with You come to a close.

Joe opted to “reveal” during his chat with Seth that “he will be” a wildly reinvented James Bond that’s more about fighting litter than international crime lords. In fact, he’ll be a Yank living in Philly and, well, you should just enjoy Joe Pera’s extremely homespun version of Agent 007, which includes Seth reading lines for an iconic scene and a rare little bit of giggly breaking from Joe during this whole bit.

Give it a watch and giggle plenty for yourself here.

Emmy Blotnick Makes a Case for Humans Getting Pampered Like Dogs

April 22, 2022
News
colbert, emmy blotnick, late night, stand up comedy

At this point in human history, there are many dogs that get treated so well that their humans don’t take care of themselves nearly as well. We’d hope that you’ve made it to this side of the pandemic with the understanding that you do actually have to active steps to take better care of yourself and that you might not be able to help others if you can’t help yourself.

Emmy Blotnick’s latest late night set hinges on radical self-care, so radical that perhaps humans should show themselves as much care as the pets that they adore, obsess over, or sometimes call their children. Blotnick dazzled the Colbert stage once again for a delight, uplifting late night set and you can (and should) watch it here.

jay jurden, late late show, late night, stand up comedy

Punchline for punchline, Jay Jurden has proven himself to be one of the best joke writers/tellers working today. There is so many punches and tags in his jokes that even we stop thinking about the classical structure of his stand-up and just how precisely everything fits together. It’s unmistakably good old fashioned stand-up, but cleverly made so splendid for everyone in 2022.

Jay already showed off his skills in his late night debut in 2019 on The Tonight Show and he just did it again for second late night set that aired on last night’s Late Late Show with James Corden.

Please enjoy it and brighten your day because it’s so good here.

For the last few years, few other comedians have ascended quite like Ziwe, writing on one of the best late night shows on the air right now, Desus & Mero, to having the hottest IG Live show during lockdown, Baited with Ziwe, to having her own groundbreaking late night variety talk show, the eponymous Ziwe.

The first season of Ziwe having the keys to her very own talk show was some of the most delectable satire in late night and this next upcoming season (streaming Fri. Apr. 29th on Showtime) is going to one-up that as you can see in this season 2 trailer here.

Ziwe will march on in her iconic mission to be unflinching in picking apart issues and celebrities (and even her own writers). This season will have Baited-ish interviews with Ilana Glazer, Chet Hanks, Nicole Byer, Hannibal Buress, Adam Pally, Charlamagne Tha God, Emily Ratajkowski, Katya Zamolodchikova, and Mia Khalifa (and the Hannibal, Ilana, and Chet ones seem like they’ll be iconic from the get go).

Truly, knowing that season 2 of Ziwe is just around the corner, Apr. 29th suddenly seems so far away and can’t come soon enough.

Please Enjoy Emil Wakim’s Late Night Debut on The Tonight Show

It’s still a toss up as to which late night show will take the baton from Conan to most prominently feature stand-up during an episode. Thankfully, in the race that’s mainly between Corden and Fallon, plenty of great comedians are getting highlighted and really getting to do their thing.

NYC’s Emil Wakim is the latest to make their late night debut and Wakim really plays with the negative space (i.e. for comedy, extended pauses and dramatic passages) while painting a honest image of his intersectional biracial identity. It’s a pretty fun, very confident late night debut and you should give it a watch here.

One of the UK’s current best comedy exports (and, consequently, one of the world’s biggest comedians), Russell Howard was supposed to go on a global tour that got was cut short back in 2020 because of, well, you know by now.

Now, on this side of things, Russell, one of the most upbeat comedians working today by the way, has hopped back on his global tour now called Respite. He’ll be working his way through North America starting next month, but kicked off his joyous arrival stateside on one of our biggest stages, The Ed Sullivan Theater at The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

James Austin Johnson Breaks Down the Specifics of His Trump Impression and Having a “Yuge” SNL Debut

Just like in his SNL debut, James Austin Johnson is the very first of the new cast members on this 47th season of Saturday Night Live to make a late night appearance. Johnson, unlike almost any other cast member in the history of the show, appeared as the core character in this season opening cold open sketch as President Biden.

Since then, JAJ has appeared in several sketches throughout this season almost as if he was a full cast member.

Johnson sat down with Seth Meyers on Late Night to share his whirlwind life changing move to NYC after finding out he got SNL and gets into the nitty gritty with how he perfected his very specific, very brilliant Trump impression.

Please enjoy his interview here and here, which we’re sure will be the first of many late night appearances.

John Early and Aidy Bryant Announce a Relationship and Made Late Night Fun Last Night

News

What late night has had to do to get through to this side of the pandemic and what it will look like (and what it should be to justify its existence) in the years to come is largely a mystery.

Above all, it should always be centered on unhinged fun, the sort that is best viewed at 11PM onwards in the late night time slots.

Thus, a round of applause should be given to John Early and Aidy Bryant going all in on a bit and camping it up in “unveiling a relationship” on Late Night with Seth Meyers last night.

Please enjoy a much more fun relationship than whatever Kanye or Pete Davidson is up to here.

Andrew Sleighter Delivers the First Stand Up Set (on TV) for 2022

January 6, 2022
News
andrew sleighter, james corden, late late show, late night, reggie watts, stand up comedy

At the dawn of 2021, the prospect of late night was much different, well, actually, slightly different than it is now. Most shows didn’t have a live audience and there was a good majority reliance on doing interviews via Zoom or some other teleconferencing platform. While Fallon and Seth Meyers both caught COVID-19 in the last few weeks, late night is pushing forward somewhat as it once did, featuring stand-up comedians doing short sets included.

The slickly funny Andrew Sleighter starts off stand-up comedy for 2022 with their first televised set and, unlike in 2021, it’s not on a boat or on a rooftop, but on a big, fancy soundstage with a live audience. Omicron is refueling the pandemic, which we’re very much still in, but Sleighter gives a great take on his quarantine epiphany: millennials’ horrid financial health compared to their actual health.

Give Sleighter’s/2022’s first set a watch on The Late Late Show with James Corden here.

It’s just a joy to hear the cartoon-like quality of her delivery coupled with her getting very personal with her life story of being raised über athletic, then still having feminine expectations by her über masculine OC family.

Honestly, Blair should be doing late night all the time. She is, quite simply, a pure joy to watch.

We can only hope that streak starts with Blair’s first late night set on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Please, please, please enjoy it here.

In fact, her writing might be some of the sharpest in stand-up comedy today as Laurie never ever stops working at her craft. Throughout lockdown, she did Zoom, drive-in shows, and outdoor shows as much as she could and, for our money, has some of the best COVID material in comedy, end of discussion.

Now that Conan has sailed off into the sunset of TV and comedy history (to return at some point in a non-late-night form on HBO Max), Kilmartin has really honed in her stand-up even more so than she already was doing. She just released her latest album Corset now available for purchase and/or streaming.

Laurie also got to do her very first set on The Late Late Show with James Corden and impart some exemplary strategies for raising your kids. Please enjoy her set here (and then follow everything she does).
