Pick of the Day: Katrina Davis: Not Funny: A Collection of Stories and Untold Joke Origins (in LA) 4/5

April 1, 2024
News
katrina davis, los angeles comedy, solo show, stand up comedy, storytelling

It’s touching to see that Katrina Davis, though she has left LA for NYC, is going to be back in the City of Angels plenty for the foreseeable future. Davis was beloved in the LA scene and we have no doubt she’s making quick work of the NYC comedy scene.

Come this Friday, April 5th, Davis will be the main attraction at The Elysian with a very special hour show that mixes storytelling, stand-up, and illustration with the idea that those in attendance will get the back story on some of her bits.

Entitled Not Funny: A Collection of Stories and Untold Joke Origins, we’re sure that there will be more than plenty of laughs as well as plenty of cathartic feels throughout the entirety of the show. Tickets are $16 and you best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Summer School: Entertainment Community Fund Benefit (in LA) 6/1

We’re almost at a month since this current WGA Strike began and all signs point towards it continuing for more weeks to come. As such, anything supporting the Entertainment Community Fund is crucial right now as many of those on the picket line are of humble means and are currently living off of reserves in their bank account.

There already have been a few comedy benefits supporting the ECF already in LA and NYC and there are sure more to come including the one, Summer School, happening this Thurs. Jun. 1st at 7PM at the Virgil that will double as a benefit for the ECF and People’s City Council Mutual Aid LA Fund.

The likes of such comedy stars (as well as a couple SNL folks) will be in attendance including: Andrew Dismukes, Adam Conover, Mike O’Brien, Jenny Yang, Katrina Davis, and Sophie Delaney along with hosts Aly Dixon, Elizabeth Schantz, and Jess Uhler.

Tickets are only $15 and admission is free for WGA members. Go get tickets and support the ECF/PCC Mutual Aid/WGA Strike here.

Pick of the Day: Katrina Davis-The Comic Is Present (in LA) 4/1 & 4/2

March 2, 2022
News
artist is present, experimental comedy, katrina davis, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

No matter how self-deprecating comedians will ever get and insist that comedy isn’t really an art form as some of us wheel and deal in humor for the lowest common denominator for much success, comedy is indeed an art form. There are others among comedy that actually bristle and brim and even burn through the edges of the forms and tropes of comedy, whatever discipline it may be, that really make it light up like the art form that it could be.

The warm and also sharply funny Katrina Davis is embarking on such a project, The Comic Is Present, with her upcoming performances of The Comic Is Present. Taking a cue from Marina Abramovic’s famous performance piece The Artist Is Present, Katrina will allow audience members to say whatever they want to her while seated opposite her for 60 seconds. Then, Katrina will turn all of that into fodder for a 50+ minute set of stand-up comedy. Neither Marina or Shia LeBeouf with a bag over his head went this far with the performance art, but, then again, either of them probably wouldn’t really want to do the stand-up comedy portion of this comedy experiment.

Here’s a bit of a sneak peek of what that might look like.

Katrina will be putting The Comic Is Present up at The LODGE in Hollywood/Melrose Hill on April Fool’s Day, Apr. 1st & Apr. 2nd at 6PM PT. You can, and very much should, go get tickets and more info here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 98: Katrina Davis & What Apologies Are Missing

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
awkwafina, joe rogan, katrina davis, spotify

Katrina Davis has not only charmed the LA comedy scene in the years since she moved here, but has become a trailblazer for being one of the first comedians to have both a virtual audience and live audience together at her show. In general, her passion to continue with both in-person and virtual comedy ought to light the way for more stubborn or purist comedians. She shares her pandemic era comedy journey with TCB’s Jake Kroeger as well as getting to actually hot hot takes on the Joe Rogan-Spotify saga and Awkwafina’s apology for her use of a “blaccent”/AAVE.

Comedy Central is doing another round, their 10th season in fact, of their short form digital stand-up series, Comedy Central Stand Up Featuring in LA. As the Satellite has sadly closed its doors awhile ago, CC will be going to another hip venue in LA on Tues. Mar. 1st, the even more kitschy Lodge Room in Highland Park (the place where you can catch Paul F. Tompkins on a somewhat regular basis these days).

Also, of course, they have rows upon rows upon rows of great handpicked comedians that, if you’re reading this, you’ve might have come to know and love by seeing them making the rounds in LA, NYC, and elsewhere. This gorgeous line-up will include (over 3 shows):

6PM: Brittany Schmitt, Mike Mulloy, Jes Tom, Jamel Johnson, Brandon Wardell & Chloe Radcliffe

8PM: Daniel Weingarten, Giulia Rozzi, Niles Abston, Felonius Munk, Mo Welch & Chloe Hillard

10PM: Danielle Perez, Joey Avery, Ali Macofsky, Sean Grant, Katrina Davis & Caleb Hearon

Pick of the Day: Sauce Comedy (in LA) 9/28

Slowly, but surely (as much as the pandemic will allow), some of our favorite shows from the before times are coming back in LA.

Many Friday nights, you could have found us at the back of a private room at Desano Pizza in East Hollywood for the fantastic weekly comedy show known as Sauce. It was nice, neatly packed show that had some of the best stand-ups in LA and some out-of-left-field bits that were the perfect cherry on top for that slice of the evening.

Thankfully, it’s back with most of its original crew, Babs Gray, Erin Lampart, and Brodie Reed and they’ve relocated to both Silverlake Lounge and a Tuesday night. Their first show back since lockdown is set for Tues. Sept. 28th at 9PM PT and admission is free (proof of vaccination required). Per usual, they have a killer line-up  for this edition of Sauce with Katrina Davis, James Fritz, Kyle Mizono & Anna Seregina, and Steve Hernandez.

If you’re in or around Silverlake in LA (or even if you’re not), make this your Tuesday night for this coming week.

It may be redundant to say as this show is being presented by D.O.P.E., but if you want to see a dope all black female showcase, look no further than next week’s Black Herstory at the Virgil.

With a line-up that hails from across the country (with some of our personal favorites), this evening, hosted by Charla Lauriston, will be an unforgettable night of black girl magic comedy that should be the thing you’re doing next Saturday night.

Go get your tickets right here right now.
