Netflix’s The Standups Gives Its First Look of Season 3

Naomi Ekperigin, Dusty Slay, Mark Normand, Melissa Villaseñor, Janelle James, and Brian Simpson make up for a well-rounded of class half-hour specials that Netflix is putting out as a way to roll into 2022. Luckily, Netflix just got these taped before Omicron took hold and all live stuff had to be put on hold for some minutes.

Who know what we’ll even look like on the other side of this particular variant of COVID-19, much less the other side of the pandemic, but we are very glad to see the likes of these six get to put out a tight new half-hour of material to a live, in-person audience. Truthfully, we’d rather see them all do an hour, but we’ll take what we can get. We have no doubt that they’ll all get to an hour if they want as they do, almost exclusively, kill it on stage.

We were fortunate enough to catch Naomi and Brian work on their particular half-hours and can confidently say that you’re in for something special and should make binging The Standups your big to-do on Dec. 29th when it streams on Netflix.

Netflix Announces Latest Half Hour Specials for “The Standups”

July 7, 2021

The somewhat slow, yet somewhat fast return of stand-up comedy continues as we’re on this side of the pandemic. One of the markers of that is Netflix announcing its latest line-up of half-hour stand-up specials that’s still generically called, for some reason, The Standups.

For 2021, they’ve got a really good batch with Naomi Ekperigin, Melissa Villaseñor, Brian Simpson, Dusty Slay, Janelle James, and Mark Normand. All of them have had specials or have been on TV regularly (or, you know, star on SNL). Some of these folks we’ve personally seen already honing their material and it ought to be something special (especially since this will be one of the first big time specials performed, very likely, with almost no capacity or mask restrictions) All six specials will be taped soon as Netflix is planning the release of this batch of The Standups for later this year.

That means you should keep a close eye (probably through the socials of any of these comedians) on when tickets for these tapings might go up wherever that might be.

Though progress has been made for racial equity and meaningful representation for BIPOC, there is still a ways to go in that regard. Next Thursday, Sept. 24th at 6PM PT/9PM ET is a good chance to keep moving the needle forward with the Ladies of Comedy Association’s fundraiser for black performers via a BIPOC specific fund at Comedy Gives Back, an organization dedicated to bettering the lives of comedians, a group that historically doesn’t do well looking after themselves.

Slated to perform at noted virtual venue, Nowhere Comedy Club, is a stellar line-up critically acclaimed and rising star comedians including Janelle James, Dewayne Perkins, Calise Hawkins, Rob Haze, and host Franqi French.

Tickets are ranging from $20 to $500 and you can (and should) go get them here now.

It may be redundant to say as this show is being presented by D.O.P.E., but if you want to see a dope all black female showcase, look no further than next week’s Black Herstory at the Virgil.

With a line-up that hails from across the country (with some of our personal favorites), this evening, hosted by Charla Lauriston, will be an unforgettable night of black girl magic comedy that should be the thing you’re doing next Saturday night.

Go get your tickets right here right now.

Jenny Zigrino and Jen Saunderson Made a Cooking Show Actually Inspired by Jokes with “The Filling Is Mutual”

If you’re a fan of any cooking show where chefs all have to use a weird ingredient, you’ll dig IFC web series The Filling Is Mutual.

Hosts Jenny Zigrino and Jen Saunderson pick out a single joke from their comedian guests’ acts and then dream up a dish based on said joke. Sometimes, it’s delicious and sometimes, it really embodies the joke as much as a recipe can.

In any case, you should watch The Filling Is Mutual and maybe get hungry for ‘dicks in a komono’ or ‘white devil eggs’.

Seeso is wasting no time in getting the second season of live comedy showcase series Night Train with Wyatt Cenac going. The renewal announcement was made today along with the line-ups feature much of the best in NYC and around the country. The tapings are all set up all around Valentine’s Day.

What makes us most excited about this new batch of Night Train is plenty more opportunity for Wyatt to spit the fire that he did with his immediate-post-election album, One Angry Night in November (you can still get it for free here).

You can get tickets, from which the proceeds will go to charity, here.

Fuse Will Have a Brand New Stand-Up/Sketch Show “Uproarious” Starting Next Month

We guess it was inevitable that all the channels that once played music videos most of the time were going to get into original comedy programming, right?

Fuse is getting into the comedy game with their brand new show Uproarious that will mix stand-up and sketch, probably a little differently than Adam DeVine’s House Party. One Jimmy Tatro will host the show that will feature the likes of such comedy stylings that we enjoy from Jesus Trejo, Emma Willmann, and Janelle James.

Look for the series premiere of Uproarious on Fuse starting Friday, October 7th at 11PM.
