The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 176: James Fritz & Political Shmolitical

August 9, 2023
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
james fritz, political comedy

Few take on politics in their comedy like James Fritz, mostly because Fritz sees how everything in the world is politicized and accordingly satirizes it. For our money, he’s one of the best at it right now. James joins for this week’s TCB Field Report to talk how politics in and out of comedy and vice versa in 2023 and just how important basketball is.

Pick of the Day: Blam! Blam! Blam! (in LA) 12/14

Yet another touchstone LA comedy show returns on this side of the pandemic. Truly, we just had no idea who or what was going to survive when March 2020 came to pass. There was a point at which we, and so many others, legitimately thought that perhaps none of it would come back. We continue to thankful for the instances where some of our favorite things in comedy have survived and are making a big, big comeback.

One such thing is another one of the LA comedy scene’s longest running comedy shows, Blam! Blam! Blam!, the monthly institution at K-Town’s super cool R-Bar is making its first official show since lockdown happen right at the end of 2021. For years, we loved spending a late night on Tuesdays at 3331 W. 8th St. with Paul Danke at the helm and a beautiful mix, curated by DeMorge Brown, of stand-ups, characters, and the always mind-bending surprise from Davey Johnson.

This return of Blam! Blam! Blam! has all of its favorites including:

James Adomian
Lizzy Cooperman
James Fritz
Nana the Cat Lady
Kimberly Clark
Anna Seregina
Jamel Johnson
Daniel Webb
Tom Waits

Don’t miss out this Tues. Dec. 14th. Get there at 9PM PT if you want street parking to be slightly less difficult.

Pick of the Day: Sauce Comedy (in LA) 9/28

Slowly, but surely (as much as the pandemic will allow), some of our favorite shows from the before times are coming back in LA.

Many Friday nights, you could have found us at the back of a private room at Desano Pizza in East Hollywood for the fantastic weekly comedy show known as Sauce. It was nice, neatly packed show that had some of the best stand-ups in LA and some out-of-left-field bits that were the perfect cherry on top for that slice of the evening.

Thankfully, it’s back with most of its original crew, Babs Gray, Erin Lampart, and Brodie Reed and they’ve relocated to both Silverlake Lounge and a Tuesday night. Their first show back since lockdown is set for Tues. Sept. 28th at 9PM PT and admission is free (proof of vaccination required). Per usual, they have a killer line-up  for this edition of Sauce with Katrina Davis, James Fritz, Kyle Mizono & Anna Seregina, and Steve Hernandez.

If you’re in or around Silverlake in LA (or even if you’re not), make this your Tuesday night for this coming week.

Pick of the Day: In The Green Room

Often, the green room of a live comedy show is one of the best places to be, especially if you want that fly on the wall experience of comedians that are off-stage, but still sharp whilst riffing with their contemporaries.

Being stuck in quarantine, the idea of gathering is still a bit away from happening (even with just comedians). Yet, you can still get a bit of the green room experience this weekly starting this Thursday 4/30 with the In The Green Room live-stream.

Set to hang back in that proverbial/virtual green room is many of Avail Comedy‘s very best including

Comedians Include*
Chris Fairbanks
Gareth Reynolds
Greg Barris
James Fritz
Maggie Maye
Matt McCarthy
Megan Koester
Nick Flanagan
Paul Danke
Phoebe Bottoms
Ramin Nazer
Ryan Singer
Sara June

* based on quarantine availability

Rather than having the news on all day, it’d be much, much better to just hang with comedians hanging with other comedians. Tune in at youtube.com/availcomedy at 8PM PT/11PM

If you follow us, you ought to know that The Super Serious Show is something that you should always be in attendance for as they always have a magnificent line-up featuring all sorts of comedy, both of stage and screen.

This edition for Oct. 2019 is no different as you can see above. In fact, this month, you’ll get to see, in addition to the fantastic comedic stylings of Byron Bowers, Lizzy Cooperman, James Fritz, Eddie Pepitone, Taylor Tomlinson, and host/headliner Asif Ali, My Favorite Murder’s Karen Kilgariff return to the stage and short films from the TBS-made-a-huge-mistake-by-shelving-their-brilliant-series sketch group The Dress Up Gang.

That should be more incentive than usual, which is a lot, to show up for this Super Serious Show.

You can tickets now for $7 (they’ll be $10 cash at door). Please do so here.

Very simply, many of LA’s best tell their worst jokes that they come up with this year. It’s a great, cathartic way to kick 2018 to the curb. Barbara Gray and Dave Child will be presiding over hosting duties.

As a holiday gift to us all, it’s free to attend. Get more details, full line-up here.

Our 7th Anniversary show is next week! Yep, we’re almost 7 years old (and we actually remembered to do something to celebrate this time around!)

We added Talk Show the Game Show’s Guy Branum, James Adomian, who you might have seen wreak delightful havoc at LA Podcast Festival, and a flyer!

Also, we’ll be raffling some of those fancy enamel pins that are otherwise only available through Patreon and our brand new album from AST Records, Comedians of Interest Vol. 1.

Tickets are $10 if you get them in advance or $15 cash at the door.

Yes, The Comedy Bureau will have officially served the LA comedy scene for 7 years at the end of this month. That’s 56 years in dog years and (probably 70 in “bureau years”?)

This time, we actually took enough of a break to remind ourselves that we should put on a show (and actually try to make some money doing so).

As you can see from this scrawled upon napkin straight from the very desk of TCB itself, it ought to be a really good time. Also, there will be a raffle that includes fancy enamel pins, our album (more on that later), etc.

You can get tickets now for $10 or $15 cash at door. Get tickets, more details (that are more legible) here.

On Sunday nights, there’s a good chance you might find us at Bigfoot Lodge East for our last stop of the evening, Babe Island.

Tonight, there unfortunately will be no Babe Island at said Bigfoot Lodge as ASW, Androsky, Gborie, and Fritz are moving their show one neighborhood over to Bar Angeles (AKA The Elliott Smith Bar at 4330 W. Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, CA) two weeks from now on Sunday, September 10th.

Per usual, they stacked the line-up with LA favorites: Jon Daly, Alex & Jude, Richard Bain, Billy Bonnell, and Amy Silverberg.

Except for the location change, it should be business as usual with the show starting around 10PM and there being no cover or minimum.

Get more details here.

James Fritz’s New Album “Still Together” Is the Feel Good Fire That You Might Need Right Now

Rising from that Bill Hicks-ian, firebrand, deeply personal side of comedy, James Fritz has been a welcome thrill to have in LA’s gigantic comedy scene.

Fritz’s comedic voice and persona are refreshing, though more fire than just a breath of air. He personally juggles growing up in rural Kentucky with his more forward thinking ideology along with his own wonderfully bleak self-deprecation. That makes for a wildly colorful, strangely hopeful* style of comedy that you might want to hear right now at this moment in time (or probably for the next several years).

All of that is captured in his new, spectacular album, Still Together. Even as James takes the stage and begins, you can enjoy his playful rage right from the get go. You can get Still Together now off of AST Records here.

*the liner notes do mention how this was recorded at a time between the RNC and the DNC for this year’s election (i.e. objectively brighter days)

If you haven’t seen James Fritz spit fire with his stand up recently, then you should definitely make sure you correct that and check him out doing a real long set, that probably won’t be too long, tomorrow night at Silverlake Lounge.

It’s free to attend and has Kevin Camia, Casey Ley, and Madison Shepard also performing, which gives you less of an excuse to not go.
