Pick of the Day: Punkie & Pals (in LA) 4/25

April 13, 2023
News
hollywood improv, los angeles comedy, punkie johnson, stand up comedy

Technically, without the time warp that is the pandemic, it wasn’t too long ago that Punkie Johnson was a staple in the LA comedy scene. She went at stages of all shapes and sizes and wrought joyful havoc on the mic.

Punkie has now been a staple of Saturday Night Live for years now and it’s not too often that Angelenos are gifted to seeing her live. Thus, it behooves us to tell you when Punkie is in town, which, lucky for LA, is later this month on Tues. Apr. 25th at 9:30PM at The Hollywood Improv.

Tickets are only $10 (plus 2 item min.) and Johnson is bringing a handpicked line-up of her favorites including Cid Williams, Feng Chao, Dicey, Nick Kekeris, Bill Posley, Lucas Hirl, and Dave Helem. Go get your tickets fast before they sell out here (space is limited since the show will be in The Improv Lab).

Pick of the Day: Comedy Gives Back-Laughing for Good (in LA) 12/8

November 29, 2022
News
comedy gives back, erin jackson, gina yashere, giving tuesday, hollywood improv, laughing thursday, los angeles comedy, sarah silverman

For a more comedy focused part of this Giving Tuesday, you might want to go get your ticket for Comedy Gives Back’s Laughing for Good, a very stacked night of stand-up comedy at the Hollywood Improv next Thurs. Dec. 8th at 8PM. Comedy Gives Back have been a safety net for comedians, for several years now, when it comes to needs for physical and mental health as well offering tons of grant money to comedians that were out of work as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This is a special night they’re putting on to raise money for their efforts that will be graced by the immeasurable comedy talents of Sarah Silverman, Gina Yashere, and Erin Jackson in conjunction with Comedy Central already pledging $10K as an official partner.

You won’t have to give $10K to go to the show. Tickets just start at $75 and go up to $250 if you’re feeling extra generous. More special guests will be announced that will very likely make it even more worth your while.

Go get them here or, if you can’t go to the show, you can donate directly to Comedy Gives Back here.

Pick of the Day: Ali Wong & Friends (in LA) 11/1-11/9

October 31, 2022
News
ali wong, hollywood improv, los angeles, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

The last time Ali Wong announced a run of shows, she sold out The Wiltern several weekends in a row. The bright, shining comedy star sells tickets out quicker than nearly most headliners in comedy and you really ought to not miss a chance to see Wong work out new material and have some of her favorite comedy folks join her in an incredibly intimate setting of The Hollywood Improv Lab.

Don’t make a mistake and hesitate, this run of shows starting tomorrow will sell out as well.

Thus far, Ali has these dates slotted:

11/1 @ 9:30PM

11/2 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

11/7 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

11/8 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

11/9 @ 7:30PM & 9:30PM

Tickets are $35 (plus 2 item min.) and you better go tickets RIGHT NOW.

Pick of the Day: Summer Girl Winter Boy: Greta Titelman and Matt Rogers (in LA) 8/5

July 21, 2022
News
greta titelman, hollywood improv, la comedy, matt rogers, stand up comedy

You’re well aware that it’s actually quite the rarity to see a legitimate hour set from a comedian while in LA or NYC. Stage time is such a scarce resource for an ever growing number of comedians that you should take the chance, if you can find it, to go watch someone do an hour rather than one of their handful of ten minute sets they’re doing around town.

For all the attitude, style, spunk, and wit that both Greta Titelman (Search Party) and Matt Rogers (I Love That For You, Fire Island) bring to the stage, you should really never miss a set of theirs. Lucky for LA, they’re co-headlining back to back at the one and only Hollywood Improv next month.

Mark down Fri. Aug. 5th at 8PM PT for having an evening on Melrose and watching Greta and Matt take over the Improv’s Main Room. Tickets are $25 (plus 2 item min.) and don’t be surprised if it sells out soon. Go get ’em here ASAP.

Pick of the Day: Tribute: An Evening of Barbara Streisand Songs Sung By Comedians (in LA) 11/12

October 28, 2021
News
barbara streisand, chase bernstein, danny jolles, Eric Hahn, hollywood improv, Jamie Pierce, kira soltanovich

Though Barbara Streisand is probably known by many these days as a touchstone American singer, Streisand had many of her first breakthroughs in comedy films including the hysterical What’s Up, Doc?

So, perhaps, the idea of a tribute to the songs of Barbara Streisand by comedians isn’t so farfetched?

Tribute is going to dive in head first with that notion as Danny Jolles, Kira Soltanovich, Eric Hahn, Chase Bernstein, and Jamie Pierce will be singing the songs of Barbara Streisand (and, we’re pretty sure, have something to say both about Barbara and the idea of earnestly(?) singing Barbara songs at a comedy club). The show itself will be a monthly honoring, brought to you by Eric Hahn, of recording artist legends, FYI.

Maybe this will kick off a trend of Barbara songs being sung at karaoke across LA?

In any case, this Streisand edition of Tribute is set for Fri. Nov. 12th at 7:30PM PT at The Hollywood Improv Lab on Melrose. Tickets are $12 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Get Your First Look at SXSW Online 2021’s Cross Country Comedy Club Showcase

March 15, 2021
News

We had previously told you that SXSW was going virtual for the entirety of their program this year as a result of the pandemic and that, for comedy, they had collected exclusive performances from some of the most well known and respected comedy clubs across the country. That includes The Stand, Acme Comedy Co., Dynasty Typewriter, Hollywood Improv, Zanies Chicago, and more.

Well, SXSW Online 2021 is happening this week, Mar. 16th-Mar. 20th, and you can take a gander at what that all looks like (including Joel Kim Booster performing in front of marionettes) as this sneak peek was just posted on Twitter. It’s nice to see that it’s not just a bunch of Zoom shows and a reminder of how much we can’t wait to get back to watching live comedy in person.

Get more info on the full line-ups of venues and performers participating in SXSW Comedy this year here.

For #SXSW Online 2021, we invited some of the most lauded comedy venues from around the country to present live shows from their home stages.

SXSW Online 2021 Announces a Comedy Line-Up Featuring the Some of America’s Most Renowned Comedy Clubs

It is not too far from this time last year that the devastating news that SXSW was going to be cancelled was going to be delivered. Along with its cancellation came the nixing of a wide-ranging program of live comedy that had become one of Texas’ biggest annual comedy events.

As we are still in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic, SXSW is going entirely virtual for 2021. They did not want to be deterred from not only highlighting the best in comedy wherever the festival could find it, but note how truly special it is and help it survive through its various “homes” and “family members”.

Thusly, SXSW Comedy is opting to have exclusive performances (done with strict COVID-19 safety protocols) from the some of the most hallowed comedy clubs in the country including Acme Comedy Co in Minneapolis, Dynasty Typewriter and the Hollywood Improv in Los Angeles, Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, and Zanies Comedy Club in Chicago with the celebrated comedy stylings of Beth Stelling, Reggie Watts, Erin Jackson, Monroe Martin III, Clayton English, Chris Porter, Emma Willmann, Dan Soder, Joel Kim Booster, and Matty Ryan. Doug Loves Movies, Matt Besser’s improv4humans, selections from The Creek & The Cave’s Bring Back Laughs will also be part of this marvelous cross-country virtual SXSW comedy round-up.

This should be a momentous occasion coming on a year of lockdown in America and how we have all endured and comedy is still going (and will hopefully keep surviving) despite being challenged like it has never been challenged before.

This year’s online edition of SXSW is set for Mar. 16th-20th and you can get more info on their comedy offerings as well as buy/register for a pass here.

In the aftermath of Christmas, when you might have just had enough of the mandatory holiday cheer, a great alternative to that yuletide haze might be a dark Christmas musical from LA comedy scene staples Jeffrey Baldinger and Jessica Michelle Singleton.

I’ll Be Broken Home for Christmas is just such a new musical from Baldinger and Singleton that will be sure to send off the holidays properly with a whole lot comically sinister takes on those classic songs that play non-stop around this time of year.

I’ll Be Broken Home for Christmas is going up at the Hollywood Improv on Thurs. Dec. 26th at 9:30PM. Tickets are $10 and you can (and should) get them here.

Though we staunchly do not enjoy the holidays, even our cold bureaucratic hearts truly enjoy the annual Jen Kirkman’s Dysfunctional Christmas Show that happens in the middle of every December at the Hollywood Improv.

Stories, songs, stand-up, gifts, surprises, and so much more all abound in the more Jen’s celebration of the holiday season in spite of how the family or the world makes you feel around this time of year. Here’s a small taste of the sort of thing that happens at the Dysfunctional Christmas Show.

Jen Kirkman’s 7th Annual Dysfunctional Christmas Show is set for Fri. Dec. 13th at 8PM at the Hollywood Improv. Tickets are $20 and you best go get them here before they sell out.

Usually, stand-up comedy done in the round is done so in gigantic spaces, a stadium, auditorium, etc. and requires a larger than life personality.

This very special evening, simply called Surrounded, at the Hollywood Improv Comedy Lab will transform an already intimate venue into an even more intimate one by putting the stage smack dab in the center of the room and having the audience sit all the way around. Also, you’ll get to see the rising stars with a line-up of Mike Falzone, Lara Beitz, Jordan Perry, and Rick Glassman as well as some newly minted JFL New Faces (Hannah Einbinder and Shapel Lacey).

Tickets for Surrounded are $12 (plus 2 item min.) and you can (and should) get them here.
