R.I.P. Gilbert Gottfried, 1955-2022

April 12, 2022
News
gilbert gottfried

Just a few hours ago, comedy titan, Gilbert Gottfried passed away at the age of 67. Gottfried hasn’t been in full health as of recent years, but news of his departure feels like it struck out of nowhere.

When all is said and done, Gilbert should go down in comedy history as one of its truly fearless boundary pushers and innovators. His unrelenting path of dismantling any and all “sacred cows” led to, as you probably know, it hard left turn when cracking a 9/11 joke just days after the attacks on the Twin Towers, but also saw him through telling the most iconic version of The Aristocrats joke (as pristinely captured in Paul Provenza and Penn Jillette’s 2005 doc).

Gottfried has had a wide ranging career outside of those two distinctions of course (Aladdin, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, Law & Order SVU, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver), but we have no doubt that the reverberations of comedy will really be felt in the coming days, weeks, and months. His comedic MO to joke about the things that no one should joke about at the time that no one should supposedly joke about them (remember how he lost out on his lucrative Aflac gig from joking about a tsunami in Japan?) has more influence on the art form of comedy today than probably has ever been written or thought about. It’s not a farfetched thought at all to think that Gilbert Gottfried’s daring on stage has changed comedy forever.

So, go down a Gilbert Gottfried Internet rabbit hole (you might be surprised by just how extensive his voiceover career was) and remember that comedy, especially stand-up, might not be where it is without him.

Mark Your Calendars for 9/8 when “Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11” Premieres

Sept. 8th, 2021 will see the arrival of one of the best documentaries not only about comedy, but about the very DNA of jokes, the audiences hearing them amidst a historic tragedy, and the truly undeniably healing power of laughter.

Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11, co-directed by Nick Fituri Scown and Julie Seabaugh, has been long in the works aiming for a release nearing the 20 year anniversary of the events of September 11th, 2001. Even in the excerpt of their doc that recounted the story of The Onion having to put its first issue out after moving offices to NYC after 9/11, we were spellbound by the depth and scope of perspectives weaved together. The feature length Too Soon goes all over the place covering comedy in the days leading up to it, as it happened, and, of course, the fallout/the discovery of ways to joke about/laugh about one of America’s darkest days.

Interviews range from Gilbert Gottfried, who was lambasted for his 9/11 jokes being akin to the doc’s title, to Nathan Lane & Matthew Broderick, who were doing a run of The Producers on Broadway at the time, to Scott Thompson, who attempted a terrorist themed solo comedy show, to Jeff Ross, Laurie Kilmartin, Ian Edwards, and numerous other comedians and people in comedy.

When it comes to joking about the taboo, this doc really shows how much people just need and utilize humor to get through the darkness (not unlike the current and perpetual moment of COVID-19).

With that in mind, you might want to catch it Too Soon: Comedy After 9/11 on Sept 8th on ViceTV.

Pick of the Day: Gilbert Gottfried Does Set List Live! 4/23

April 20, 2021
News
carmen morales, gilbert gottfried, improvised stand up, nowhere comedy club, set list

Before lockdown, when international comedy was able to be done in person, there was a phenomenon known as Set List that challenged comedians ’round the world to improvise stand-up based off of absurd, never-before-seen topics as if it was a part of their long-standing, best-selling act. It had played almost every single comedy festival in existence and had been a TV show in both the UK and Australia.

Of course, in person comedy has taken a “sabbatical” due to the pandemic, but the virtual space has provided for plenty of new avenues and innovation and transition in comedy. Set List, given it’s reach and the fact that both comedians and audience discover a never-before-seen topic together makes it kind of a dream for virtual comedy, which is why we’re thankful to see the iconic Gilbert Gottfried do a whole Set List show (with Carmen Morales opening) this Friday at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET via Nowhere Comedy Club.

Gottfried speaking on completely random topics, after all of what the world has been through, really ought to be one of the more thrilling comedy experiences throughout the entirety of this virtual era of live comedy.

Tickets start at $10 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

It really takes a special kind of comedian to be worthy of a documentary that puts their life, both on and off stage, under the microscope.

Gilbert Gottfried is definitely one of those comedians.

The upcoming documentary Gilbert from Neil Berkeley will not only looks into the long, winding, storied career of Gottfried, but show what he’s like in between being the unmistakable voice on stage and screen. In fact, you get to hear what his real voice sounds like.

See for yourself in the trailer.

Gilbert starts playing in NYC on November 3rd and in LA on November 10th.

Sony Pictures Classics Lands Distribution for “The Comedian” Where Robert De Niro Plays an Insult Comedian

So, he’s just going to be a little less crazy than De Niro’s Rupert Pupkin from The King of Comedy.

Not only is there a lot of buzz on the order of award nominations around this latest De Niro vehicle, The Comedian, but he’ll play an insult comic that has to face his own demons and grow, which definitely has our interest peaked. Hannibal Buress, Gilbert Gottfried and Jim Norton will be featured as fellow stand-ups in the movie and the insults were written by none other than the Roastmaster General himself, Jeff Ross. We haven’t seen a trailer or a TV spot, but it’s kind of hard to not have a bit of a good feeling about The Comedian.

Look for limited release from Sony Pictures Classics at the end of this year/beginning of next year.

Scott Rogowsky has been hosting his own live late night talk show Running Late for years, but made history recently by using said talk show to find a roommate.

He made a listing for an open house, then notified people that there would be cameras documenting them for a “project on NYC housing”. He didn’t explain any further and had potential roommates walk into a talk show set in a living room complete with guests Gilbert Gottfried, Andrew WK, and music band leader The Gregory Bros.

He made a whole web series as a result of this experiment that you can watch right here.
