Comedy Central Orders Weekly Variety Show Pilot Hosted by Justin Willman, Produced by Chris Hardwick

August 6, 2014

(via Deadline)

Comedy Central is going further into the Nerdist/Chris Hardwick business after the sucess of “@midnight” by ordering a pilot produced by Hardwick for a variety show intended to be weekly.

Justin Willman who you might know as a charming magician or the host of Cupcake Wars would be set to host what would be a mix of sketch, stand-up, “social experiments”, and more.

This might prove to be another nice way to expand Comedy Central’s branding as a variety show doesn’t currently exist on Comedy Central.

Summer is almost over and with it is coming the next row of returning series at Comedy Central that continues to be on a roll with its programming schedule. South Park, Key & Peele, Tosh.0, Adam Devine’s House Party, and Brickleberry are all set to come back through the end of August to the end of September.

You should all be paying attention to Comedy Central’s batting average when it comes to returning shows because it seems pretty great. Also, this should all keep us well entertained while we wait for the premiere of Moonbeam City.

Drunk History enlisted the drunk storytelling skills of Dave Ross and Steve Berg to tell the amazing stories of the anti-segregation Judge Waties Waring and how Citizen Kane was made, respectively.

The reenactments bleeding into the drunkenness of the storyteller along with Rich Fulcher as Waring and Jack Black as Orson Welles are priceless in these clips.

Nathan For You made waves all over the world when he founded Dumb Starbucks. After months after the first Dumb Starbucks, we all get the whole story including getting legal advice, becoming a parody artist, hiring the staff, and then actually opening up, all leading up to getting shut down for health code violations.

It’s as amazing as you would think it is. Hopefully, we’ll see the return of Dumb Starbucks soon.

It’s time to get the pussy back on the chain wax (i.e. stop feeling down that there has been a void of Key & Peele in your life). Season 4 is just under two months away from premiering on Comedy Central, specifically Sept. 24th.

With that, we’ll all get to see Hillary Clinton’s Anger Translator too.

Jim Gaffigan’s pilot that was in contention for awhile at CBS has now officially moved to a ten episode order at TV Land for next year and gotten a title, The Gaffigan Show. The show, much like his stand-up, will draw from his experiences of being a husband and father of five.

Reruns of The Gaffigan Show will air on Comedy Central a week after their air on TV Land. This has us curious if CBS and NBC will end up regretting letting go of The Gaffigan Show and Mulaney respectively.

Paul Scheer along with Lilan Bowden, Jeff Sloniker, Barak Hardley, Lee Newton,  Jacob Womack, and H. Michael Croner make up Comedy Central’s CC: Social Scene that will be making sketches based off of theme based user suggestions from Twitter.

For proof, here’s the whole CC: Social Scene team together explaining what’s happening. So far, there will only be six episodes, so don’t sit too long on thinking of what to suggest if you indeed want to hopefully influence a sketch at the Twitter #CCSocialScene.

Yet another promising animated series trailer lands today. After the trailer for Adult Swim’s Mike Tyson Mysteries found its way from Comic Con to the Internet, Comedy Central just posted a trailer for their latest animated series, Moonbeam City.

Between the voices of Rob Lowe, Elizabeth Banks, Kate Mara, and Will Forte, and the spectacular neon color palate, over sized clothes, etc. Moonbeam City looks like everything you’d want an 80s animated procedural comedy to be.

Both Drunk History and Nathan For You just got picked up for their third seasons at Comedy Central only after a few weeks into their second seasons.

On their night, we’ll still maintain that Drunk History, Nathan For You combined with The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and “@midnight” is one of the most solid blocks of comedy on TV right now and will thankfully be that way in the future.

The city of San Diego thought it prudent to give one Kurt Metzger a jaywalking ticket while he was walking back from a bar rather than driving.

Little did they know that this great bit on Kurt’s Comedy Central hour long stand-up special White Precious would be the result (spoiler alert: they do not come off as the good guys).

By the way, you should buy White Precious off CC:Stand-Up Direct for $5. It’s pretty damn great.

On last night’s Colbert Report, Marvel’s Joe Quesada made the announcement that there will be a new Captain America and he will be Sam Wilson otherwise known as The Falcon.

Last year, Rory Albanese left his long tenure at The Daily Show as a writer/executive producer to pursue other projects, do a bit of stand-up, etc. In fact, he signed a development deal with Warner Bros. and subsequently sold a project.

Now, Albanese is returning to his EP role on a Comedy Central series, except it will be on the brand new show with another Daily Show alum, Larry Wilmore and his upcoming show,The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore set to replace The Colbert Report.

Though this doesn’t give us much more details on The Minority Report, it should instill a more confidence in whatever they’re up to in developing it right now.

If there’s one a recurring issue that Nathan Fielder seems to have throughout hosting his show Nathan For You, it seems to be that many folks don’t like his persona very much. With this in mind, he hired an expressly diverse focus group to give him pointers on camera and make over his entire image in the hope that people will like him more.

Of course, this experiment doesn’t happen without a few Nathan’s own “obstacles”. Watch parts one and two here.

Now that The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail is a TV series having its series premiere on Comedy Central Jul. 23rd 12:30AM, you’re probably wondering how it, a great comedy show in the back of a comic book store, all got started.

Well, while it’s always been in the back of Meltdown Comics, it hasn’t always been hosted by Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani. In fact, the show had been going for awhile, but only went to the weekly phenomenon that we all know now with the forces of Jonah, Kumail, and producer/booker Emily Gordon coming together a few years ago.

Watch and hear the full origin story here.
