TCB Debriefing 1/17 & 1/18/24: Josh Gondelman, Suncoast, Nitecap, JoCo Cruise, Clone High S2, Schmigadoon/Rap Sh!t

1. Josh Gondelman should run for office, mostly because he’s the sort of deeply and genuinely good person that would never want to run for office with the way American politics is run. Also, he is so damn funny. See all of what we’re saying with his Don’t Tell set here.

2. Hulu scored big with dramedy with all the wins racked up by The Bear, so they’re leaning in even more. Case in point, their latest feature release, Suncoast that sees a lonely, trauma drenched teen befriend a grizzled Woody Harrelson (is there any other kind these days?) here, then look for it on Hulu on Feb. 9th.

3. One of the coolest spots for comedy in Burbank, Nitecap, will be back in business starting next weekend.

4. Defying logic, the JoCo Cruise is the cool cruise for comedy fans and wondrous nerds alike and it’s set for its 2024 voyage on Mar. 9th. Peep a fraction of the stellar line-up, then get tickets at jococruise.com.

5. Both Schmigadoon and Rap Sh!t have just been cancelled by Apple TV+ and Max respectively. Guess networks have it out for music based comedies.

6. Despite Max bringing down the ax today, cult favorite Clone High has been spared and is due for a second season on Max on Feb. 1st. Take your first gander of the alt history hijinks coming to season 2 here.

7. We’ll leave you with this: After nearly two years of not having a host on The Daily Show, Comedy Central says that they’re going to announce “new steps” for the show that just garnered another Emmy win. Sounds like they’re still not sure.

Get Your First Look at the New ‘Clone High’

Between the trio of Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Bill Lawrence, there is a veritable comedy empire that spans movie, TV, live action and animation. Since 2002, their paths have led them to critical and commercial darlings including The LEGO Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Afterparty, Scrubs, and Ted Lasso.

Also, in 2002, they all created a cult animated favorite, Clone High, the first in many milestones of their quick-fire, smart off-beat humor. Over 20 years after it first premiered, Lord, Miller, and Lawrence are reviving the series of HBO Max and though reboots/revivals/refreshes/etc. are getting tiring as a commodity, this particular new edition of Clone High looks pretty damn fun (especially with almost all the core elements/characters intact).

After all, if Lord and Miller could make a beloved movie franchise out of LEGO, they certainly can redo their own series with Bill Lawrence.

See for yourself in this first teaser for the new Clone High here, coming to HBO Max soon.

This week, TCB’s Jake Kroeger zooms with the beloved comedy and art world hybrid Christina Catherine Martinez. Even without a pandemic, Martinez has managed to imbue her comedy with her professional art critic sensibilities to create marvelously absurdist, subversive, high brow, yet incredibly silly bits, stand-up, and characters. Her and Jake discuss what her detailed plans for translating her conceptual comedy to live-streaming platforms like Zoom on IG Live, the extension of her Aesthetical Relations brand/universe (even revealing plans for a special), and an attempt at a quick rundown of Groundlings’ controversy, MTV animated series revivals, and Comedy Central’s order of two new John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch specials.

Also, here’s John Cage’s 4:33 to get that John Cage joke at the end.

Classic MTV Animated Series Continue to Make Comeback with Revivals of Clone High and Beavis and Butt-Head

News

Possibly following the lead from the Jodie, the upcoming Daria spin-off at Comedy Central, other MTV animated properties are getting another shot, specifically Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Clone High (via  Deadline) and Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head (via THR).

Beavis and Butt-Head is already in the works for its return at Comedy Central with series creator Mike Judge back overseeing the revival that supposedly will include specials and spin-offs. Clone High’s reboot has been announced by MTV Studios, but it has yet to find a network to call home.

Given the need for new content and animation being suddenly one of the best, safest ways to produce a TV series while quarantine continues, it’s not entirely surprising to see a new wave of nostalgia-baiting additions to development slates. Those that grew up with Clone High hold on to the series very fondly and the success of Lord and Miller (making things like The LEGO Movie be better than anyone could have possibly imagined) after that has probably made Clone High fans even more loyal. Mike Judge has also had a monumental career following Beavis and Butt-Head including Office Space, King of the Hill, Idiocracy and Silicon Valley and has expanded his fan base beyond the Beavis and Butt-Head crowd. It’s a unique situation for both series as not only is the strong pull that many millennials and even some Gen X-ers will have to at least binge a few episodes, but the curiosity of fans from all of their other work to check out these upcoming revamped versions of their early work.

How the production and release of these two series will be a curious case to watch. Animated production does take a bit of time and we do wonder how these shows will fare if there is already a vaccine in place and people just want to stay outside for awhile.
