Pick of the Day: Jackie and Laurie Present

March 10, 2020
News, Uncategorized
burbank, jackie kashian, laurie kilmartin, los angeles, pick of the day, stand up comedy

Hands down, one of our all time favorite podcasts is The Jackie and Laurie Show with the amazing, brilliant, hysterical pairing of Jackie Kashian and Laurie Kilmartin. Their weekly perspective as some of the funniest comedians working today (that happen to be older women) is a true joy and illuminating on how far we’ve come with representation in comedy and how much further we need to go.

This evening is a special showcase that not only feature Kashian and Kilmartin, but a collection of their “Comics of the Week”, a handpicked line-up of their favorite female comics that you need to see, which will include Marcella Arguello, Hannah Einbinder, Robin Tran, Kimberly Clark, Bernie Pauley, Amy Anderson.

So, you’ll get a bit of Jackie and Laurie and an amazing stand-up show all in one night. Tickets for Jackie and Laurie Present are $20 (+2 item min.). Please go get them here.

Simply put, The Sklar Brothers are and have always been a true joy to watch. Their cadence, act outs, writing, rhythm, imagination always make for a joyful ride through their marvelous brand of comedy. Of course, as their duo of twins, they are just able to hit those punchlines and tags so damn fast and it never fails to have us cackling wherever and whenever we happen to be watching them.

All of that is on display with their latest appearance on Conan, which you should very much watch here.

Apple TV+ Gets a Bit of That Bob’s Burgers Magic with Trailer for Loren Bouchard’s Central Park

March 10, 2020
News, Uncategorized
apple tv plus, loren bouchard, stanley tucci, trailer

Unlike Disney+, Apple TV+ hasn’t exactly gotten to ride the coattails of something like The Mandalorian. Perhaps, this super charming musical animated series from beloved Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard might be the thing to put Apple TV+ on the map.

There are clever songs with animated dance numbers, the comfort and familiarity of Bouchard’s aesthetics from Bob’s Burgers, and even Stanley Tucci voicing an evil 1%-er in the vein of a Captain Planet villain dead set on paving over Central Park to build more NYC high rises. See all of this for yourself in the newly unveiled trailer.

Certainly, we’re very on board to see what Central Park is all about. We’ll look forward to May 29th when it premieres on Apple TV+.

Pick of the Day: Glow Show with Joey Z

March 11, 2020
News
experimental comedy, glow in the dark, kyle kinane, los angeles, reggie watts, variety show

It’s unfortunate that SXSW got cancelled (amidst a bunch of big time events getting cancelled because of COVID-19). However, if you were looking forward to seeing some very special comedy in Austin, TX during SXSW this month, perhaps you can get kind of close (without leaving town) with the Austin-born Glow Show with Joey Z.

As the name suggests, it’s a comedy show with glow-in-the-dark running rampant from start to finish and this line-up certainly is worthy of SXSW with the likes of Reggie Watts, Kyle Kinane, and fresh off her TV debut and fantastic debut album Vanessa Gonzalez. We have no doubt that this ought to be something special.

The Glow Show with Joey Z is set for Mon. Mar. 30th at Lyric Hyperion at 9PM. Tickets are $8 now and $12 day of. Save a few bucks and go get your tickets here right now.

Please Enjoy Marlena Rodriguez’s Late Night Debut on A Little Late with Lilly Singh

March 11, 2020
News, Uncategorized
late night, lilly singh, marlena rodriguez, stand up

From where we’re looking, it might seem like there’s a nice little wave of late night stand-up debuts this month. Last week, Hannah Einbinder dazzled on Colbert. This week, Marlena Rodriguez graces the stage of A Little Late with Lilly Singh for her very own late night network TV debut (and we sincerely hope more are coming over the next couple of weeks)

Rodriguez blends bits of sobering honesty with undeniable silliness, which she especially commits during act outs. It’s a very satisfying mix of the dark and the light that Marlena has perfected over the years.

So, please enjoy Marlena’s comedic stylings with this very set from last night’s A Little Late with Lilly Singh.

Quibi Picks Up Joel Kim Booster’s “Trip” to Series

(via Deadline)

Even when it was announced that it was in development, we were very excited for Joel Kim Booster‘s modern-day, gay rom com inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

As far as we’re concerned, Booster’s wickedly sharp sense of humor needed to be in a show somewhere and it’s finally going to happen as the upcoming mobile only streaming service Quibi just ordered it to series.

We’re sure that people will be binge watching everything as they stay indoors and consequently run out of things to watch soon enough. So, it’s nice to know something this unique is on the horizon.

Pick of the Day: Fancy Sauce (i.e. Return of Sauce Comedy)

March 12, 2020
News
comedy show, live comedy, los angeles, stand up comedy

For every day of the week, there is usually one or more weekly live comedy shows that you can rely on in the Greater LA Area to deliver you the best in stand-up, sketch, and improv. For Fridays, Sauce was absolutely one of those shows and hosts and LA comedy favorites Barbara Gray, Erin Lampart, Jeff Wattenhofer, and Brodie Reed maintained a damn good stand-up comedy show (that always included some jaunty, original bits and characters) at 8PM at Desano Pizza Bakery for years and years.

Now, after a bit of a hiatus, Sauce is back, but has evolved into Fancy Sauce and will be going up at The Airliner on Fridays, starting next month. We have no doubt that they’ll be as good as they have ever been in The Airliner’s brand spanking new, wonderful upstairs show room.

So, Fancy Sauce will be in Lincoln Heights (just North of DTLA) starting Fridays at April 3rd at 9PM. Tickets will be $5 and it should be part of your weekly comedy diet, especially if you live far on the Eastside.

We were already pretty thrilled at the prospect of a Three Busy Debras series on Adult Swim.

This trailer is just a bit more a sneak peek of the fun, absurdist, feminist chaos that Sandy Honig, Mitra Jouhari, and Alyssa Stonoha have in store for us all. We can’t wait.

Look for Three Busy Debras to premiere on Adult Swim on Mar. 29th at midnight.

Many LA Comedy Venues Announce That They Have Gone Dark for March

March 13, 2020
News

Due to concern over the spread of this latest novel Coronavirus, COVID-19, events and venues around the world have be shutting down/postponing/cancelling events/etc. in a way to combat the spread of said virus. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom has called for a moratorium on any public gatherings of 250 people or more and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has strongly encouraged the same with events that bring 50 or more people together.

Thus, plenty of venues and shows in and around Los Angeles have taken it upon themselves to be pro-active and preemptively suspend operations.

Here’s a rundown of announcements made by major comedy venues around LA right now (we will update this with any new updates/changes as frequently as we can).

*UPDATED*

Upright Citizens Brigade (Franklin, Sunset, Inner Sanctum)-all operations are cancelled until further notice.

Dynasty Typewriter-all shows are postponed until further notice.

The Comedy Store-All shows suspended through March.

Largo at the Coronet Theatre-All shows considered postponed.

Westside Comedy Theater-all operations are suspended until further notice.

The Groundlings-All shows cancelled until Mar. 31st.

Hollywood Improv-Calendar shows that venue is dark until April 1st.

Lyric Hyperion Theatre & Cafe-Theater will go dark until end of March.

Flappers Comedy Club-shut down until further notice.

Second City Hollywood-All performances suspended until further notice.

The Clubhouse-Closed until further notice (possibly will re-open on Mar. 20th)

Pack Theater-All shows cancelled until further notice.

Hollywood Laugh Factory-closed until further notice.

Comedy & Magic Club-All shows are postponed until further notice.

Ahmanson Theatre (where Book of Mormon is, well, was happening)-all shows cancelled until at least Mar. 31st.

Flappers Comedy Club-capacity of Main Room and Yoo Hoo Room limited in respect to state recommendations.

Haha Cafe-Closed until further notice.

Tao Comedy Studio-closed for the next week.

Many indie shows and open mics are going dark as well, but NOT all of them are. For now, many of the hourly mics are still active and there are a handful of small shows that are still going forward as of this post. Again, we will be sure to keep you as updated as we possibly can to know where you can go see a show if you so choose (NOTE: it probably will be at a very small venue).

Truly, all we need to say is that you’ll get to see Eddie 7 days a week with characters, rants, guests, and more during these weird times. Eddie’s firebrand (often meta) comedy might be perfect thing to hear/see right now. Tune in at @eddiepep on Instagram at 4PM PST daily.

The Midnight Gospel Teaser Hints at Netflix Animation Getting as Trippy as It Has Ever Been

March 17, 2020
News, Uncategorized
adult swim, duncan trussell, netflix, pendelton ward, the midnight gospel

Combining the otherworldliness of both Pendelton Ward, creator of Adventure Time, and comedian Duncan Trussell can only amount to something super trippy, wildly colorful, and mischievously subversive. To be those things at Netflix (considering their animation line-up already including BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, and LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS) is quite a feat.

Thus, The Midnight Gospel has been born or, rather, is set to be born on April 20th when all episodes stream on Netflix.

Get a taste of how they’re going to expand and tickle your mind with this teaser (we don’t even want to giveaway too much in order to let you let the idea of The Midnight Gospel wash over you sans any hints)

Community to Stream on Both Netflix and Hulu

News, Uncategorized
community, hulu, netflix, now streaming, where to watch

(via Variety)

Due to the notion of self-distancing and, in general, staying home in these weird times, we have no doubt that you’re indulging every show and movie that you ever thought about watching/rewatching.

So, now is about as good a time as ever to find out that the landmark sitcom Community created by Dan Harmon will not only be on one streaming service, but, due to a nifty deal that Sony Pictures TV struck, be available on both Hulu and Netflix. The series is already on Hulu and will begin streaming on Netflix on Apr. 1st.

There are six seasons to watch and maybe this will lead to #sixseasonsandamovie becoming a reality.

Chris Gethard Presents Is Continuing Their Marathon Livestream on Twitch

News

In the ongoing quest of finding things to do during these weird times, might we suggest something that you haven’t look to yet because you’ve probably spent a lot of time binging on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime etc. etc.

A few months back Chris Gethard returned to his public access TV roots to highlight his favorite comedians and also give them a platform to make a show the way they want with Chris Gethard Presents. They’ve already featured such wondrous talents from all around NYC as Sam Taggart & Max Wittert, Megan Stalter, Mary Houlihan, Monroe Martin, Christi Chiello.

You can watch clips over at their YouTube channel OR you could watch the full episodes as they were intended to be watched during an ongoing (even as we typed this out and posted this) marathon over at Twitch. They’ve got episodes streaming back-to-back throughout all hours of the days today and tomorrow (and maybe even more).

Here Are Some Delicious Teasers for What We Do In the Shadows Season 2

March 18, 2020
News, Uncategorized
fx, season 2, teaser, what we do in the shadows

Season 1 of What We Do In the Shadows managed to expertly pull off both adapting the beloved movie of the same name from Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement into a TV show, staying faithful to the look and tone as well as introduce a new facet of the “grounded” vampire universe with a whole new cast of new characters.

Truly, one of the best things we saw last year.

Season 2 is right around the corner as you can see in these teasers and, thankfully, it’ll be one thing (probably) that won’t get postponed. Look for season 2 of What We Do In the Shadows to premiere on Wed. Apr. 15th on FX.

Conan To Return March 30th (with a Quarantine Friendly Version)

March 19, 2020
News
conan o'brien, quarantine, tbs, team coco

You probably have already seen that Conan O’Brien has been providing us with the sort of bits and tomfoolery that made him famous from the comfort and CDC recommended location of his own home. Leave it to the likes of Conan O’Brien to keep the silliness alive during these anxious times of this COVID-19 pandemic.

Other late night hosts have been also “broadcasting” from home, but the ever clever O’Brien has devised a way to do his show by shooting on an iPhone and utilizing video chat to interview guests.

Thus, Conan, will continue to air in this stripped down version (that’s oddly both lo-fi and high-tech) on TBS starting Mon. Mar. 30th at his normal air time of 11PM ET/PT. Technically, that makes Conan entirely a remote segment, which is where O’Brien has truly thrived in the last few years.

We can’t wait to see Conan do what he does best, make TV history, and inadvertently be a great ad for the iPhone’s video capabilities.

Here’s a List of Local Comedians That Really Need Financial Support Because of COVID-19 Pandemic

March 19, 2020
News
aid, la comedy, local aid, los angeles, relief, support, support artists

In addition to great comedy livestream benefits that are happening like Comedy Quarantine and King Lear From Home or a GoFundMe for venue staff at Lyric Hyperion, a Google Doc has been assembled for comedians and comedy folks in LA that are financially affected the most as nearly all live, in-person entertainment has effectively shuddered for the coming weeks.

Per the doc:

What is this: Comedians rely on live performances to make their living, and many comedians are losing or canceling paid work due to covid-19 and CDC recommendations. There are other ways to support your favorite comedians – many of them have merch, albums, or skills that can be booked that don’t require seeing them in person (notes on scripts, graphic design, etc!).

See, share, potentially join in on (NOTE: Please use your best judgment when including your needs on this document; if you have a full-time job with benefits and are not losing financial income, this might not be the document for you) the Alternate Income for Comedians! here: bit.ly/HelpComediansCOVID19

What We Do in the Shadows Season 2’s Full Trailer Is Here

March 20, 2020
News

The return of What We Do in The Shadows is a few weeks away and, as such, we’re getting more of a taste of what they’ve got up their ruffled sleeves and damn it looks fun. Not only do you have Nandor, Nadia, Lazlo, and Guillermo trying their very best, but still falling short of being exemplary vampires, but we’re really looking forward to seeing “energy vampire” Colin Robinson’s evolution with intentionally bad jokes.

See all of this for yourself in the full season 2 trailer for What We Do In The Shadows here. Look for it on FX starting Wed. Apr. 15th.

Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen Is Back On! (via Livestream)

hot tub with kurt and kristen, livestream, stand up comedy

One of the pillars of LA comedy is the amazing, weekly Monday (mostly) stand-up show, Hot Tub with Kurt & Kristen. Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has led to plenty of suspensions of live comedy shows across the board right now leading to a big wave of livestreaming, especially in the last week.

Thus, Hot Tub is joining in, starting tonight, on said wave, thankfully, at its same time, 8PM on Mondays with yet another fantastic line-up. In fact, it might be the first time that Hot Tub has ever done this and this might be the first live comedy show in LA to return via livestreaming.

This first livestreamed Hot Tub has a line-up of:

Ian Abramson
Dana Donnelly
Chris Garcia
Maya May
Caleb Synan
Sarah Tollemache
Nick Turner
Nick Ciarelli and Brad Evans

You’ll just have to watch it on Twitch at 8PM PDT/11PM EST. Tune in via Twitch here: http://bit.ly/hottubstream. Also, they’ll be taking donations during the show via Twitch, but you can donate to the comedians performing before the show here.

The wondrous comedy duo, The Puterbaugh Sisters, have just released their latest work, a madcap feminist satirical web series Kitchen Women. Danielle and Tiffany Puterbaugh revisit life as a woman in the 50s, back when the notion of women belonging in the kitchen was unfortunately all too commonplace.

Fortunately, they revisit such times with a darkly comedic lens highlighting the cracks in the veneer of such a life fettered with broken glass and vodka. There is plenty of hysterical bedlam (as well as plenty of cameos by LA comedy favorites like Marcella Arguello, Ever Mainard, and more) through all six episodes.

So, without further adieu, please enjoy all episodes of The Puterbaugh Sisters‘ Kitchen Women here.

Comedy Quarantine Is Becoming a Nightly Stand-up Livestream (That Allows You to Pay Comedians Performing)

News
comedy quarantine, live stream

The very first @ComedyQuarantine offered dozens and dozens of the best comedians in and around LA to not only perform and give all of us a bit of a break, but get a chance to get so much needed support as so much work has dried up.

Now, what we thought might have been a one-off livestream is going to become a nightly one, Monday-Friday, bringing more of LA comedy’s favorites that, up until two weeks ago were performing at the plethora of weekly stand-up shows all around town. Last night’s line-up was pretty stellar including The Puterbaugh Sisters, Casey Ley, Clark Jones, and Molly Ruben-Long.

Tune in to @ComedyQuarantine on Instagram Live (and also check who’s playing on their IG feed) with hosts Teresa Lee and Barbara Gray Mon.-Fri. at 7PM PST/10PM EST with new line-ups every single night.

Not only is this a marvelous short from  The Dress Up Gang (NOTE: TBS continues to keep their show on their shelf even though this is an even better time to put their entire brilliant series out on some sort platform) starring DeMorge Brown that is so playfully strange and offbeat, but it has absolutely nothing to do with COVID-19.

Enjoy 5 minutes and then some of DeMorge being an absolute joy and The Dress Up Gang nailing the weird minutia of daily life with A Day with DeMorge here.
