Fox Names Street on Their Lot After Mel Brooks

October 25, 2014

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Turns out George Carlin isn’t the only comedy legend to get a named after them this week.

Fox Studios made sure that the street that runs by the sound stage where Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein was shot at bares the Brooks’ name and had a ceremony earlier this week.

So, if you’re on the Fox lot here in LA, which is much harder to get to than George Carlin Way, make sure to go by Mel Brooks Blvd and try to recreate that big chase scene through the studio backlot from Blazing Saddles.

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Will Be Writing “The Lego Movie” Sequel

(via Deadline)

For those worried that the magic of Phil Lord and Chris Miller for the very first Lego Movie wouldn’t come around for the sequel, worry not.

Lord and Miller have indeed just signed on to write the sequel even with their busy schedule these days and Hollywood wanting to work wonders with their most improbable projects (i.e. taking a child’s toy franchise and make a hit movie out of it).

So, everything is awesome, once again?

Our 1461st Day

October 26, 2014
Uncategorized

As of today, The Comedy Bureau is 4 years old, or 1461 days (365 x 4 plus one day for one leap year in 2012). We here at The Comedy Bureau have yet to take a day off since we were founded on Oct. 25th, 2010, a streak that we don’t mind keeping up in this wonderful, bizarre, innovative, defiant (and a whole grab bag of other great adjectives) comedy scene in this seemingly infinite metropolis that is Los Angeles.

We didn’t have any anniversary celebration lined-up tonight because we were too backed up in paperwork here at Comedy Bureau HQ and LA comedy just has too much going on tonight. Don’t worry, we’ll have an official 4 year anniversary shindig soon.

Still, we look forward to continue to make seeing, doing, and knowing about comedy here in LA and beyond, possibly even more in the not so distant future (cough cough, producing “things”, that’s all we’ll say for now, cough cough).

The only thing is that our entire staff ever shows up to work. In fact, it just seems like that there’s only ever one guy here. Maybe some donations would help out with that? If you can’t donate, just please spread the word about what we do.

Feel free to chant 4 more years for our benefit at your convenience. People thinking about the midterm elections of the end of Obama’s administration shouldn’t be confused at all.

Series Creator Jill Soloway Looking Towards Five Seasons for “Transparent”

(via Deadline)

Amazon has already renewed their hit dramedy series Transparent for a second season, but creator Jill Soloway already has plans to go five seasons should the series make it that far according to a recent interview.

That’s quite a stretch for an online series, but Transparent has quite the acclaim thus far to make a go for five years.

Perhaps, there might be even more as syndication, in the traditional TV sense, isn’t quite the same with online streaming services.

Two books that need to be on your shelves by the end of the year are Bob Odenkirk’s “A Load of Hooey”, which is out now, and Megan Amram’s “Science… For Her!”, which comes out Nov. 4th.

On top of that, Odenkirk and Amram are touring the country for their respective books. Bob’s tour is already under way and will visit San Francisco tonight, then go to Pasadena, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Chicago, and NYC through Nov. 9th. Brandon Wardell, who is on Odenkirk’s upcoming stand-up album Amateur Hour, and special guests will be coming along too.

Amram’s tour stretches from Nov. 5th-Nov. 15th and has stops in Los Angeles, Portland, Toronto, Cambridge, NYC, and Brooklyn.

So, get both books and catch both Bob and Megan read live or whatever awesome, crazy thing they choose to do at these book tour events.

Take a Listen to The Actual Finale to David Cross’ Album “It’s Not Funny”

October 26, 2014
Uncategorized

(via Splitsider)

10 years ago, David Cross released a stand-up album by the name of It’s Not Funny and, whether you were aware of it or not, the final track on the album was not the actual finale to the live performance that was recorded.

Now, Cross has released the finale that was cut from the album by Sub Pop called “Clapping in the USA” via The Comedian’s Comedian Podcast with Stuart Goldsmith.

While it’s a bit of an incendiary track to be sure in the way it satirizes Christianity and country music, no one would be surprised that this would ever be the close to an hour of stand-up from David Cross, leaving all of us slightly confused why it would be left off the album.

Luckily, we get to all hear and enjoy it now.

Meryl Streep Set to Play One of the Worst Opera Singers of All Time

Uncategorized

(via Deadline)

Even with her turn and a capable singing voice in Mamma Mia, acting demigod Meryl Streep’s next project will have her playing the role of Florence Foster Jenkins in a biopic directed by award winning director Stephen Frears.

Jenkins, a real figure in 1940s New York high society, was widely regarded as a terrible singer, but she got to sing opera as a career as she was a wealthy heiress. Audiences still turned turning out for her performances, presumably to see how bad it really was.

The story will follow her manager/partner keeping up the illusion that she has a great voice, so, we think there should be a good bit of comedy to come out of this movie.

Also, if you’re wondering how bad a singer Jenkins was, notice how you’ll cringe at her botching Mozart.

High Concept Comedies Are in Style Ahead of This Pilot Season

There are indeed plenty of semi-autobiographical comedies in development, especially with the success of freshman series Cristela at ABC.

However, at the other end of the TV comedy development spectrum, at this time, is a bunch of high concept comedies that steer clear of the fish-out-of-water in a small (or big pond) dynamic. Conspiracy theories, witches, and, highest concept of all, Vine stars, and more are all subjects for comedy projects that are being worked for TV across several networks.

Specifically, TBS has ordered a sort of Lost parody from Justin and Jordan Shipley, DirecTV has ordered a parody reminiscent of Downton Abbey that will star Peter Serafinowicz and Will Sasso from College Humor’s Big Breakfast, Elizabeth Banks is set to produce and direct a workplace conspiracy theory comedy from Caroline Williams at ABC, 30 Rock’s Josh Siegal and Dylan Morgan are writing a witch comedy at NBC, Nick Frost is set to star in a comedy as an ex-jewel thief that’s having trouble getting out of the jewel thief business also at ABC, and Rainn Wilson is developing a series following stars (minus Curtis Lepore due to Internet outrage at his rape charge that he plead down to an assault charge) on the six second movie platform Vine trying to make it in the traditional half hour format.

There’s no telling where these will end up, if anywhere at all, but it’s a good sign to see more comedy series in the works that aren’t how two people met and fell in love or how an abnormally configured family figures out how to be a family.

Twitter’s Audio Card and Tumblr’s New Video Player Offering More Ways to Consume Your Comedy Online

The last few weeks have seen a few new social media innovations that might make being plugged into watching your favorite sketch group or listening to your favorite podcast while scrolling through your timeline.

Twitter has just introduced an “Audio Card” that will allow you to listen to embedded audio, just via SoundCloud for now, while combing through your favorite tweets or possibly tweeting yourself (perhaps, live tweeting a podcast if you have way too much free time on your hands, perhaps?).

Weeks ago, Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer announced that the Tumblr video player would get an overhaul. Their first version of the new Tumblr video player has arrived and it does indeed work better than previous versions and allows for easy embedding of Instagram and Vine videos. You can also loop the video player, again, if you have way too much free time on your hands. The video player will also pop out to the side of your Dashboard, though we’re guessing you’re not going to do that while watching various comedy videos.

Well, let’s see how much more you’re glued to your smartphone because of these innovations and that’ll be a good gauge of how well these two upgrades to Twitter and Tumblr are.

Of course, the Last Week Tonight team and Oliver do a bang up job of letting us all know what’s up, making us laugh, and encouraging action. Watch it all here.

When you take stock of all the problems that you have in your life and who you would look to advise you in how to solve said problems, the first two names that pop up are, of course, comedians Jen Kirkman and Michael Ian Black.

While, for awhile now, it’s been not easy to just go up and ask them your advice, you’ll have that very opportunity when they shoot their new show for JASH, Really Good Advice. What great luck we all have, right?

They will be filming two live shows at Nerdmelt on Nov. 17th, 7PM & 9PM and if you can get to this, you should definitely go.

We can’t wait to see what comes of this whether it be a web series, a TV show, etc.

Just because an apocalyptic event has happened and civilization and life as we know is falling apart at every turn doesn’t mean that people still get on each other’s nerves for the little things like what to bring to parties or how to go about getting rid of your stuff. It’s just that the end of the world has happened and that’s kind of hard to forget.

Good Cop Great Cop’s Matt Porter and Charlie Hankin delve into the post-apocalypse minutia in their brand new CC:Studios web series New Timers where they explore that exact premise beautifully.

So, ahead of Joe taking a slight detour from the show’s focus by going to a Rhubarb Festival, they gave him a more “energetic” co-host and the results were not what Joe expected. In fact, they were the last thing Joe expected.

The company you always hear so much about while listening to your favorite podcasts, Audible, will now be more than for just hearing audio versions of books.

Audible has just brought Rooftop Comedy into their fold, which really means that Rooftop is now part of Amazon’s fold. Other than partnering Audible, Rooftop doesn’t seem like they’ll be changing course much and will continue in their current direction of taping and distributing live comedy like the Holy F*ck album, but, presumably, with a little more corporate weight behind them.

We’re curious to see if the number of people listening to comedy albums off of Rooftop’s label will get a spike from this.

truTV’s big shift from reality and court TV to comedy, specifically with the branding “WAY. MORE. FUN.” has begun and it’s kicking off one of its more highly anticipated shows tonight, “Friends of the People”.

With a cast boasting The Lucas Brothers, Kevin Barnett, Josh Rabinowitz, Lil’ Rel, Jermaine Fowler, and Jennifer Bartels, we think it definitely will be worth checking out the series premiere tonight at 10:30PM on truTV.

We can see this is probably going to be way more fun already.
