1) Tenacious D’s music video for their first single from their new album “Rize of the Fenix” got an applause break from us.

2) Jonah Ray is releasing his new album, Hello, Mr. Magic Plane Person, Hello, on 10" white vinyl with dropcard for a free digital download on May 15th. Better beat everyone else to the flea markets for a record player over the next two weekends.

3) A preview of the Between Two Ferns special this weekend with Jon Stewart…

4) Apparently, TMZ thought it was really cool when Robin Williams dropped in at the Nerdist Theater, “a small comedy club on Sunset Blvd.”, last night, but didn’t bother with Patton Oswalt dropping into the Best Fish Taco in Ensenada on Tues.

5) Tonight on late night:
Lena Dunham on The Colbert Report (Comedy Central 11:30PM)
Stephen Colbert on The Late Show with David Letterman (CBS 11:35PM)

Last night on late night:
Amy Poehler played 5 Second Impression or Die with Jimmy Fallon

6) A big congratulations goes to one of our favorite funny people, Erin Gibson, on becoming a writer for Funny or Die!

7) Horatio Sanz dressed up as a luchador tries to fight drogas in NYC in his new web series Espanto. That’s all we need to say besides WATCH.

8) Ashton Kutcher dressed up as a Bollywood director for Pop Chips and it didn’t work out nearly as well…

9) There is a thing called Network Awesome and they’re looking for ‘video people’.

10) Long-ish reads on comedy:
Serial Optimist interview with Ian Edwards
“Say It One More Time and See What Happens” our latest essay at the Nerdist
““YOUR REVIEW OF THAT REVIEW OF THAT REVIEW OF “GIRLS” WAS AWESOME!” by Matt Champagne

11) Comedy abroad-ish:
In Arizona: Marc Maron TONIGHT, Taylor Williamson this weekend, and Jen Kirkman.
Baron Vaughn TONIGHT at Acme Comedy Co. in Minneapolis, MN
Harland Williams at the Jukebox in Peoria TOMORROW
The Beards of Comedy in Iowa

12) I wonder who would get more heavily criticized this weekend: the person who writes how they thought the Avengers "suckd ballz” or the comedian who tries to make Junior Seau jokes?

1) Pete Holmes was on TMZ. Is that what qualifies making it in Tinseltown now? Also, does anyone still call it Tinseltown? ALSO, is TMZ going to ambush Drew Carey at UCB tonight? These are questions we want answered.

050212_etrade_still

2) Last night on late night:
Stephen Colbert worried about Lena Dunham
Colbert talked Super PAC with Letterman

3) Veep’s Julia Louis-Dreyfus chatted with NPR and HBO Connect…

4) The hilarious Jackie Kashian simultaneously gave all the answers to most interviews that she’ll get as well as laying some wonderful truth about comedy including a great answer for what she would do if she wasn’t doing comedy. Please read.

5) Greg Barris imagines his ideal of real love in this completely sincere web video…

6) When Set List: The Improvised Stand-Up Show is over, it still isn’t over as Kumail Nanjiani tried to do an interview following his set, while “no one”, possibly Reggie Watts, was watching him.

7) There’s a trailer now for the Feelings Comedy Tour with Dave Ross, Jake Weisman, and Matt Ingebretson.

8) Ep. 15 of Louis vs. Rick, the story of a man who taught his cat to use instant messaging.

9) If you’re wondering what the latest emoticons that kids are into these days, let Jake Weisman fill you in.

10) I’d like to think there’d be a day where they will be nothing more to adapt into a movie, but originality without a built-in market is always a risky business model, right Hollywood?

Louis CK & Aziz Ansari’s Web Specials to Air

Uncategorized

DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS UPDATE On March 20th, I released my second standup special Dangerously Delicious for download/stream on azizansari.com for $5 (thanks to Louis CK for figuring out the Internet). Its been a great experience and I’m glad I did it. I wanted to give an update to answer some commonly asked questions. ARE MP3s GOING TO BE AVAILABLE? Ideally I wanted to release MP3s directly at a low price the same way I did the video of  special, but contractually I have a record deal with Comedy Central who put out Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening, my first record. (And did a great job, I enjoyed working with them on that special and CD/DVD). Anyway, I owe them albums and decided to just release this with them as well. If you really want MP3s, you can get the album on iTunes and all that stuff starting May 20th. To be clear though, I’d rather you buy the video from me for the cheaper price of $5 and you can experience the audio only version by closing your eyes or looking away from your screen while you watch.  IS THIS MATERIAL THE SAME MATERIAL YOU ARE PERFORMING ON YOUR NEW BURIED ALIVE TOUR? NOOOOOOOOOO!! Buried Alive is a totally different hour with no overlap. I worked really hard to have a new tour ready for this summer, so please rest assured its all material I haven’t released on any special. If you are interested in coming to see Buried Alive, tickets and tour dates are here. IS DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS GOING TO BE ON TV? Kind of. I edited a new version that’s about 20 minutes shorter (for commercials) and bleeped. Its significantly different than the uncensored, uncut one that you buy and own on azizansari.com for $5. This television version premieres on May 20th at 10 on COMEDY CENTRAL. I decided to do this for a few reasons. First off, to get Emmy consideration a version of the special needs to air on television. Secondly, this version is so different from the real deal one you get from me, that I didn’t feel like its cheating anyone who bought it. Also people buy CDs/DVDs of specials for way more than $5 and versions of them air on Comedy Central so I thought people would understand that. I’m hoping it’ll get more people to hear about the special and check out the full version from me, which will in turn help me put out more content in this fashion (which people seem to like). WILL YOU DO YOUR NEXT SPECIAL LIKE THIS? Maybe? Who knows what the landscape will be like in a few years when I release it. I have thoroughly enjoyed releasing Dangerously Delicious this way though and appreciate all the support. WHO WON THE FACEBOOK CONTEST? We did a contest where the city with the most Facebook likes on the azizansari.com page would get a free show. New York City won. Details on the show soon, just trying to squeeze it in between tour dates. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE BOYZ II MEN VIDEO? “I’ll Make Love to You” with the home security technician played by the dude from Above the Rim.

Louis CK’s award winning Live at the Beacon Theater will air on FX May 12th.

Aziz Ansari’s Dangerously Delicious will air on Comedy Central May 20th 10PM.

Hopefully, this doesn’t mean the “great experiment” in comedian self-distribution is over.

Stephen Colbert’s I Am Pole (And So Can You!) is Now Available

May 9, 2012
Uncategorized

As we’ve mentioned, Stephen Colbert’s first children’s book, I Am a Pole (And So Can You!), is now available in hardcover, e-book and an audiobook read by Tom Hanks. 100% of the proceeds from the audiobook will be donated to US Vets. To mark the occasion, a special page has been created on the Colbert Nation website with info and links to buy. It also features both of the original installments of Stephen’s interview with Maurice Sendak, which saw the unveiling of I Am a Pole, and Stephen’s special tribute to the late author from last night’s show.

Yes, the children’s book that Colbert came up with while interviewing the late great Maurice Sendak is now a reality. Also, the audiobook version is read by Tom Hanks. Just try and have a bad Wednesday, now.
