Judd Apatow Gets Looks of Concern in Trailer for His Netflix Special

November 14, 2017
Uncategorized
amy schumer, chris gethard, judd apatow, mike birbiglia, netflix, ronny chieng, stand up, trailer

On December 12th, a brand new comedy special from Judd Apatow will stream on Netflix. It won’t be some sort of variety TV special. It will be an hour of stand-up special from the writer/director/producer that used to do stand-up several years ago, first coming up with Adam Sandler before heading off to writing gigs at places like The Larry Sanders Show.

As it turns out, the idea of Judd Apatow: The Return as a stand-up special has caused some alarm for comedians who he has personally worked with behind the camera over the years.

See for yourself in this trailer what Chris Gethard, Amy Schumer, Mike Birbiglia, and more have to “say” to Apatow about returning to doing stand-up.

Real Life Just Paralleled Armando Iannucci’s “In The Loop”

November 14, 2017
Uncategorized
armando iannucci, in the loop

Iannucci’s landmark film In The Loop from 2009 largely followed a Minister of the Department for International Development (played wonderfully by Tom Hollander) consequently causing chaos after having some rather unfortunate meetings that lead to his eventual downfall. Also, Peter Capaldi screams some of the funniest lines in cinema the whole way through.

It just so happens that, in 2017, real life Minister of Department for International Development Priti Patel has come under serious fire for unannounced meetings with Israeli politicians including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Civil servants at Priti Patel’s Department for International Development have been told to expect a new minister, The Independent understands.”

In the film, Hollander loses his position as Minister of Department for International Development during a quite disastrous trip to Washington, D.C.

Whether life actually imitates art will always be up for debate, but we’d like to think that Armando Iannucci is just that brilliant with political comedy that something he makes fun of is inevitably and unfortunately bound to happen.

Night of Too Many Stars Is This Saturday (and HBO Made Sure to Redo This Promo Sans Louis C.K.)

The big annual TV special Night of Too Many benefiting programs for autism was set to be even bigger as this is the first year that the live event will be broadcast on HBO rather than Comedy Central.

Jon Stewart and a whole boatload of, as the name suggests, too many stars do various bits through the evening in order to raise money. Until last week, one of those guests was Louis C.K., then all the fallout of his sexual misbehavior claims being confirmed happened resulting in C.K. effectively having his career stripped away from him.

So, this promo was actually promptly redone to make sure C.K. was completely severed from the event.

All of that being said, it still has “too many stars” and you should set aside time to watch and support on Saturday, November 18th on HBO at 5PM/8PM PT/ET.

Louis C.K. Influenced a Generation of Comedians. What Happens Now?

Vulture’s Jesse David Fox keys in on how a whole generation of comedy will need to reflect on what being “brutally honest” on stage means and how it might now be received depending on your angle.

If you watch or listen to any of Louis’ specials/albums where got “brutally honest” or watch the very controversial episodes of Louie now, you’ll find that much of what you might have laughed heartily at is now, unfortunately, kind of disturbing and sad.

For Some Over the Top Murder Mystery Comedy, Watch Trailer for “Game Night”

From the looks of the trailer, Game Night seems to fall somewhere between It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Clue, and The Game.

On many levels, this movie seems utterly ridiculous, especially Rachel McAdams relative calm throughout this “game night” ordeal and Jesse Plemons’ bit. Yet, all the set pieces seem almost inexplicably enjoyable (let’s hope that there are more than just what’s shown in this first trailer) and they kind of have us on board for whatever this ride is.

Seeing Jason Bateman and Sharon Horgan on screen is always a plus as well.

In any case, see all of this for yourself in the trailer here.

Game Night is set for theatrical release on March 2nd, 2018.

Louis C.K. Confirms Sexual Misbehavior Claims, Issues Apology Following Being Dropped from “Night of Too Many Stars”, Having His Specials Taken Off of HBO, Netflix Scrapping a Second Special, and The Orchard Shelving “I Love You, Daddy”

November 10, 2017

In the course of less than 48 hours, Louis C.K. had his entire career furiously brought down, effectively losing it all. All of his current works/projects/appearances were nixed or shelved and his entire catalog and all the other stuff he’s involved in will undoubtedly feel the fallout from this ordeal.

So, of course, he couldn’t keep going on not saying anything, which is why he just issued this statement in apology (via Variety):

I want to address the stories told to the New York Times by five women named Abby, Rebecca, Dana, Julia who felt able to name themselves and one who did not.

These stories are true.  At the time, I said to myself that what I did was okay because I never showed a woman my dick without asking first, which is also true. But what I learned later in life, too late, is that when you have power over another person, asking them to look at your dick isn’t a question. It’s a predicament for them.   The power I had over these women is that they admired me.  And I wielded that power irresponsibly.

I have been remorseful of my actions. And I’ve tried to learn from them. And run from them. Now I’m aware of the extent of the impact of my actions. I learned yesterday the extent to which I left these women who admired me feeling badly about themselves and cautious around other men who would never have put them in that position.
I also took advantage of the fact that I was widely admired in my and their community, which disabled them from sharing their story and brought hardship to them when they tried because people who look up to me didn’t want to hear it. I didn’t think that I was doing any of that because my position allowed me not to think about it.
There is nothing about this that I forgive myself for.  And I have to reconcile it with who I am.  Which is nothing compared to the task I left them with.

I wish I had reacted to their admiration of me by being a good example to them as a man and given them some guidance as a comedian, including because I admired their work.

The hardest regret to live with is what you’ve done to hurt someone else.  And I can hardly wrap my head around the scope of hurt I brought on them. I’d be remiss to exclude the hurt that I’ve brought on people who I work with and have worked with who’s professional and personal lives have been impacted by all of this, including projects currently in production: the cast and crew of Better Things, Baskets, The Cops, One Mississippi, and I Love You Daddy. I deeply regret that this has brought negative attention to my manager Dave Becky who only tried to mediate a situation that I caused. I’ve brought anguish and hardship to the people at FX who have given me so much The Orchard who took a chance on my movie. and every other entity that has bet on me through the years.

I’ve brought pain to my family, my friends, my children and their mother.

I have spent my long and lucky career talking and saying anything I want.  I will now step back and take a long time to listen.

Thank you for reading.

If you somehow had your hopes up about a new season of Louie ever getting made, you can let that go now.

Going forward from here, it must be made clear that people’s lives need not suffer for the benefit of creative and artistic genius within a person who does such things. As far as comedy is concerned, there are plenty of brilliant comedians that do not commit rape, sexual assault, harassment, misbehavior, or engage in any sort of behavior that irreversibly harms people.

You probably won’t be able to watch a lot of Louis CK’s works the same way ever again. However, if you thought, at any time, that he was so funny that you couldn’t imagine finding anything else funnier than his shows, movies, and stand-up, know that you will find someone and something else that will make you laugh just as hard or even harder. Trust us, we watch comedy 7 nights a week.

NY Times Publishes Exposé Detailing Numerous Allegations of Sexual Misconduct by Louis CK and CK’s Colbert Appearance and “I Love You, Daddy” Premiere Have Been Cancelled

November 9, 2017

Five women came forward with allegations about C.K.’s sexual misconduct, specifically his masturbating compulsion, in the NY Times article published today.

As a result, public appearances by CK, specifically an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and a high profile premiere of his movie, I Love You, Daddy”, which, as we’ve said before, couldn’t be coming out at a worst time for C.K..

As of this moment, it’s pretty much radio silence on C.K.’s side of things.

Given the powerful changing of the tides with sexual assault/harassment/misconduct charges toppling those in powerful positions, it would seem that there’s very little shock or surprise left in anyone.

Undoubtedly, there will be more to come out about C.K. in the coming hours and days, but one has to wonder how much longer he won’t respond to any of these allegations, especially for the fact that his entire life in comedy, entertainment, etc. could get the chopping block just like Kevin Spacey’s did.

Ryan Stout’s 2nd Album “How To Be An Audience” Lives Up to Its Title

If you’ve done stand-up for awhile, you learn that all audiences are different and, as such, have their own unique dynamic, energy, and attitude.

Ryan Stout, on top of being a sharp joke craftsman, is always hawkish about how the crowd is responding in this regard and has a knack for aggressively, yet cleverly jostling them around to his side. His second album, How To Be An Audience, serves as a perfect example of how Stout pulls this off since the crowd is noticeably cold right at the top of the hour.

However, that doesn’t deter Stout. Ryan pushes forward for the hour with his command of the stage and unshakeable confidence in his material and ends up killing.

Literally, he trains the audience, a la the title, how to be an audience and make them enjoy it the whole way through. For that alone, you should pick up How To Be An Audience.

Also, if you’re a fan of dark comedy, you should know Stout is always a sure bet.
