ABC Developing Chinese-American Family Comedy From Jessica Gao

ABC Developing Chinese-American Family Comedy From Jessica Gao

If you’re unfamiliar with the name Jessica Gao, you should watch the credits of Rick and Morty a little closer (she’s staffed as a writer there) and listen to the podcast Whiting Wrongs where Gao and Dan Harmon have frank conversations about race in Hollywood.

Familiar now? Good.

Coming from the world of Rick-and-Morty-verse/C-137, we can only wonder what Gao has up her sleeve here. The premise is straightforward enough with a estranged daughter being forced back into their overbearing Chinese family via being the sole heir of a family fortune. Hopefully, we’ll get to see the final product if and when this goes to series.

Tickets are going for $15-$100 and can (and should) be bought up here.

ABC Orders Put Pilot of Simon Rich Family Comedy Starring Kristen Schaal

If you loved the whimsy of Simon Rich’s series-that-should-have-had-a-longer-run Man Seeking Woman, a comedy that stars Kristen Schaal at ABC that is, “told from a child’s perspective is about working together, overcoming adversity and getting the monsters in your closet not to eat you,” ought to serve up as much as whimsy as you can handle.

That being said, this project has no title and is only at the put pilot stage, but it certainly is one of the more intriguing things on ABC’s development slate in recent memory.

Also, we hope this gets picked up so Kristen Schaal gets top billing on a TV show.

Jake Kroeger has over 30 years of life almost entirely devoid of dating anyone seriously.

Rather than go on dating apps to try and solve this remedy, he’s going to do the next best thing by taking an entire audience on a date at the Lyric Hyperion in Silverlake that also doubles a live comedy show (that’s the next best thing, right?).

If you’re in on this because you have a crush on Jake or just want to give a desperate person some acceptance and validation, you should go get your tickets here.

Comedy Central’s Latest Digital Series ‘Unsend’ Will Have Joel Kim Booster and Patti Harrison Sending Up the Internet’s Reactions to Everything

While making fun of the Internet on the Internet is nothing quite new, the opportunity for Joel Kim Booster and Patti Harrison to host a show together is an opportunity not to be passed up.

We look forward to the far reaching amounts of shade they will be throwing every which way during this show.

Fans of Norm MacDonald Live (and Norm MacDonald in general) will be happy to know that the Netflix edition of Norm’s talk show will be a continuation of what MacDonald was already doing.

As you can see in the trailer, the mischief abounds even though it’s pretty much as stripped down as a talk show can get. All episodes will be available for you to binge next Friday, September 14th.

The CrabFeast with Ryan Sickler and Jay Larson Is Coming to an End in 2018

One of our all time favorite podcasts The CrabFeast (it’s probably one of the best storytelling podcasts around too) is indeed coming to an end. Announced last night, hosts Ryan Sickler and Jay Larson will end their run of well over 300 episodes in December of this year.

It’s sad to see such a fantastic show go, but rest assured that Sickler and Larson will be continue putting stuff out there including their own individual podcasts in the not so distant future.

Oh, if you haven’t gotten into The CrabFeast, do yourself a favor and get into it as soon as you can.

Armando Iannucci Joked About a Trump Movie Pitch on Twitter, But It Might Actually Happen with Julia Louis Dreyfus on Board

Yesterday, one of our favorite comedy power players Armando Iannucci tweeted:

Film pitch.. Trump drugged and moved to a replica Whitehouse, where he carries on thinking he’s governing. Millions spent on hiring actors to play his staff, Senators, news anchors, people at rallies.
There you go. Studios, your highest bid please.

There is “interest from Hollywood” according to Armando, which shouldn’t be surprising as Iannucci is probably the best mind we have working today when it comes to political comedy and satire and Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus tweeted that she’s in for a key role in this supposed project.

Comedy sure has gotten fatigued by the ridiculousness of Trump, but we would welcome Iannucci’s take, which sounds pretty fun. Also, we’d like to add that Iannucci is one of the few people in comedy that should be able to sell a project from just a tweet.

According to Deadline, there is actual talk between multiple studios and deals being made for this to really happen.

Other details beyond this are sparse, but you should go take a look at Iannucci’s Twitter feed as it is full of pictures where Trump has been replaced by penguins. Hopefully, that figures in the movie, if it happens, as well.

Comedy Central Signs Anthony Jeselnik to a Multiplatform Deal Which Includes a Half-Hour Series and Also a Weekly Podcast, “The Jeselnik and Rosenthal Vanity Project”

The Jeselnik Offensive may be long gone, but it looks like Anthony Jeselnik will be back bigger than ever at Comedy Central.

The half hour show seems to be half panel interview and half stand-up with clips of stand-up sparking conversation between Jeselnik and guests. The podcast with co-host Gregg Rosenthal (NFL Network) will focus on the NFL.

Jeselnik discussing comedy will be intriguing as we’re guessing he’ll have to drop a bit, if not a lot, of his famous stage persona.

Given Jeselnik’s penchant for gallows humor, it’s probably worth noting that the Jeselnik and Rosenthal Vanity Project will launch on Comedy Central’s Global Podcast Network on 9/11 next week.

Erin Gibson’s whipsmart humor has dazzled us for years (you’re acquainted with Throwing Shade by now, right?).

Her just released book Feminasty: The Complicated Woman’s Guide to Surviving the Patriarchy Without Drinking Herself to Death is yet another dazzling work. It gathers timely essays on the weird seemingly “not-so-fun-mirror-funhouse” we live in, but does so in a grand laugh-out-loud fashion. It’s a pleasing read while shining a deservingly harsh light on those responsible for sinking us into the aforementioned bizarro mirror funhouse.

So, you can and very much should go get Feminasty now here.

Four years ago, BoJack Horseman debuted on Netflix and broke new ground for being a complex comedy that featured a bold tone shift towards the end of that first season.

Ever since, BoJack has received loads of acclaim by striking a great balance between satirizing the entertainment biz and pondering the ever present existential crises of life with super clever animal jokes all while being an animated series.

This upcoming fifth season, as this trailer shows, seems game to up the ante on what has already been a pretty damn great and unforgettable ride.

Look for all episodes of season 5 of BoJack Horseman to drop on Friday, September 14th.

There’s another round of a tight 15 minutes of stand-up from all the names above as Pt. 2 of Netflix’s Comedy Lineup (we maintain that they could have come up with a better name) just started streaming today.

Similar to Pt. 1, it’s a very diverse collection of comics and many who we’ve personally enjoyed seeing ascend the stand-up ranks with their fantastic and finely honed comedy stylings to having a special on Netflix (like Aisling Bea, Emma Willmann, Kate Willett, and Max Silvestri). It also has more of that organic feel that you’d get when going to see stand-up from these folks live in person (a thing all of you should be doing if you’re not already).

You’ve got all of Labor Day Weekend to enjoy approximately two hours of Aisling, Emma, Janelle James, Josh Johnson, JR De Guzman, Kate, Matteo Lane, and Max. We can only hope this will lead to you going to see them all live doing way longer sets.

Please Watch This Docu-Short (and Excerpt from an Upcoming Doc on Comedy and 9/11) “The Onion Issue” About How The Onion Dealt with Making Their First Issue Right After 9/11

This week, legendary satirical publication The Onion marked their 30th year as one of the premier institutions of satire in our culture today. When it comes to topical humor, their ingenious headlines and articles have blazed a trail having them be a household name (even though it wasn’t too long ago that people were still mistaking Onion headlines as real news).

There are so many ways you can metaphorically (or literally) raise a glass to this achievement, but we would urge you to watch this short film The Onion Issue about how they handled making jokes right after 9/11 to celebrate this anniversary.

Take note that this short is, as mentioned above, part of a feature length documentary called Too Soon: The Comedy of 9/11 coming out in 2021 from Nick Scown and Julie Seabaugh. From the looks of it, that documentary will be probably end up being required viewing for any and all in and around comedy.
