Showtime Orders “I’m Dying Up Here”, Executive Produced by Jim Carrey, to Series

The stories of so many podcasts might just be getting recreated.

The 70s LA comedy scene series I’m Dying Up Here (written by Dave Flebotte based on a book by William Knoedelseder that Carrey attached himself to) is now getting added to the Showtime line-up.

So, you’ll get to see the LA comedy scene the last time it was the hot bed of comedy, some 40 years ago.

Accomplished actors and comedians will mix in the cast including Melissa Leo, Ari Graynor, Erik Griffin, Jon Daly, Armen Weitzman, Clark Duke, Michael Angarano, RJ Cycler, Alfred Molina, Al Madrigal, Stephen Guarino and more.

Since it’s only based on real life, we can only ponder what they’ll be calling The Comedy Store instead of The Comedy Store.

This Might Be the Funniest Trailer for “Hail, Caesar” Yet

Less focused on the plot about a Hollywood fixer trying to rescue a studio’s leading man back in Hollywood’s Golden Age and more focused on classic Coen Brothers humor and the refined abilities of Ralph Fiennes, this trailer assures you that you should really go see Hail, Caesar! in theaters when it comes out on Feb. 5th.

Amazon’s Next Movie Will Be a Jim Jarmusch Comedy Starring Adam Driver

(via Deadline)

Amazon knows how to hit those indie buzz names.

Though typically it’s a few years before we get the next Jim Jarmusch movie, it’s kind of worth it.

2013 had the fantastic dark vampire wry romantic comedy Only Lovers Left Alive and 2016 promises his next film Paterson with Adam Driver starring.

It’s coming out through Amazon Studios and it’s going to be a wry comedy (that’s kind of Jarmusch’s thing in case you weren’t familiar) and that’s about all we know right now.

Still, you can let your imagination conjure up what a Jarmusch movie with Driver in it might be and still be wildly and delightfully surprised and what we’ll end up getting.

David Cross Challenges Seth Meyers to Stand, Sit, Lie Down During Interview

Sure, David Cross talked about Todd Margaret, With Bob & David, and his upcoming stand-up tour in his interview last night with Seth Meyers.

What was more fascinating to us is the pose-for-pose challenge that Cross posed to Meyers who stood up/sat down/laid down to.

Amy Schumer to Receive Critics’ Choice MVP Award

Actor are players, so it works, right?

Though Amy Schumer didn’t get a Golden Globe for her unfiltered romantic comedy Trainwreck, she will be getting a special distinction with The Critics’ Choice MP Award. The Critics Choice covers both TV and movies, so the honor is well deserved for Schumer between Inside Amy Schumer, Trainwreck and her HBO special.

Anyone taking bets on whether Schumer will do a bit with Jennifer Lawrence while she’s accepting her award?

Seeso’s following up their first comedy special release of Rory Scovel’s The Charleston Special with another special from one of our absolutely favorite people, Cameron Esposito.

It’s called Marriage Material and it’s her first hour special and it’s directed by none other than Bobcat Goldthwait. It starts streaming at Seeso on Mar. 24th and will also be available on iTunes that same day.

We’ve come to know and love Cameron for taking bold, personal stances in her comedy and yet still making it inviting and very funny for all. This preview clip of Marriage Material where she takes on gun control is a perfect example of this and why you need to remember 3/24.

Conan Remembers How Funny David Bowie Was Over the Years

As the rest of the world are paying their own respects to David Bowie, a legend amongst legends, Conan O’Brien took an entire segment of last night’s show to pay tribute to Bowie by showing some of his funniest moments between interviews, doing bits, and, of course, Bowie Secrets.

There’s pretty much no way Bowie didn’t bring people together, as you can see, and for that he’ll live on forever in our hearts, minds, spirits, souls, etc. just like we thought he would.

1939′s “The Wizard of Oz” Has Now Been Alphabetized to Make “Of Oz The Wizard”

Filmmaker Matt Bucy is the mad genius behind what was a daunting task for something so sublimely silly.

Netflix Bringing Back Norman Lear’s “One Day at a Time” with Rita Moreno Starring

Netflix is making sure that no demographic goes unturned.

Back in 70s, Norman Lear was a king of comedy on the small screen with All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Sanford and Son, and Good Times just to name a few.

40 years later, his cuban-family centric series One Day at a Time is getting a second life over in the form of a 13 episode season written by Gloria Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce order at Netflix and it already has legendary actress Rita Moreno attached.

We’re going to keep our fingers cross that it takes cues from multicam sitcoms like The Carmichael Show in that it won’t hide from the pressing issues of today.

Conan Has “Conan in Qatar” Set for Jan. 25th and Is Returning to Comic Con

More of Conan O’Brien roaming around is a great thing.

Last year, it was announced that Conan O’Brien and Team Coco would have six different week long trips that would be shot and edited into specials. So far, we’ve really enjoyed Conan in Cuba, Conan in Armenia, and his trip to Comic-Con.

Naturally, we’re happy to find out that his next trip special where he ventures over to Qatar to visit the troops is premiering on Jan. 25th. John Mulaney, First Lady Michelle Obama, and more joined O’Brien during his time there. Also, the announced return to the San Diego Comic-Con is pretty great too and we can only hope that he makes his visit an annual tradition.

If Conan’s gone to places like Cuba, Armenia, and, soon, Qatar, one can only be curious what other places like that is he going to visit? Siberia?

HBO Orders Pilot of Bill Hader Hitman Comedy “Barry”

Bill Hader as a lonely hitman finding himself amongst theater folk in LA might just be good enough for a greenlight as far as we’re concerned.

While Veep and Girls are getting into their latter seasons, HBO is readying itself for its next few comedy series in the years to come. The Duplass Brothers’ Animals is set to premiere at the end of the month and adding a pilot of Hader starring in a hitman comedy sounds like a pretty great addition to their development slate.

The project, Barry, was co-written by Hader and Alec Berg, who we hope you know from Silicon Valley and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and we sincerely hope that it makes it air just to see what the two have cooking.

You, Me and The Apocalypse from Iain Hollands has promise from this promo as well as Rob Lowe, Megan Mullally, and Jenna Fischer starring.

Look for its premiere on Thurs. Jan. 28th. at 8PM on NBC.

Ricky Gervais Invited to Host The Golden Globes for Fifth Time

(via Deadline)

Though only a handful of other people have even hosted The Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais might have a chance to host The Golden Globes as many times as Billy Crystal has hosted The Oscars.

He said that was going to be nice before he got into his monologue at last night’s Golden Globes Awards ceremony. Gervais was indeed nicer than his previous times hosting and it looks like that got him the offer for the gig again.

Billy Crystal has hosted The Oscars 8 times and, if Gervais accepts, this will be his fifth time hosting the ceremony. Given how against the grain the HFPA tends to go with their awards in general, this shouldn’t come as shock.

We guess a bunch of people might try signing up for Amazon Prime now?

Last night, The 2016 Golden Globes Awards were handed out and some of the winners in the comedy category definitely show how broad the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s definition of comedy is. It ranges from something that fits the ‘comedy or musical’ requirement perfectly like Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to The Martian taking two Golden Globes as a comedy.

Here are the rest of the comedy Golden Globes winners:

Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy-“The Martian”
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy-Jennifer Lawrence, “Joy”
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy-Matt Damon, “The Martian”
Best Motion Picture-Animated-“Inside Out”
Best Television Series-Musical or Comedy-“Mozart in the Jungle”
Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Musical or Comedy-Gael García Bernal, “Mozart in the Jungle”
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series-Musical or Comedy-Rachel Bloom, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”

Here’s the full list of winners.

Also, Rachel Bloom’s speech for her win for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is pretty swell.

Yes, it’s really, really, ridiculously good looking.

Gallery 1988 is, if not the best, probably one of the world’s premiere galleries of pop culture inspired art. Arrested Development, famous stand-up comedy, etc. have all gotten art tributes from professional artists and rested on its walls.

“King For A Day, Mugatu For A Lifetime” by Brendon Flynn

Now, they just had a whole show in tribute to Zoolander as the Zoolander 2 is coming out this year and it both does Blue Steel proud and shows off the finer points of how ridiculous Will Ferrell’s Mugatu looks.

With BoJack Horseman and a multitude of web series that have talking animals, it would seem anthropomorphized animated series are becoming their own sub genre.

That being said, there’s still room for more such shows as you can see with this teaser of The Duplass Brothers’ Animals.

Not only are NYC animals talking like regular New Yorkers a clever concept, but having the voice talents of Nick Kroll Matt Walsh, Steve Zissis, Adam Scott, Colbie Smulders, Marc Maron, Zach Woods, Jessica Chastain, Horatio Sanz, Kumail Nanjiani, Katie Aselton, Wanda Sykes, Paul Scheer, Rob Corddry, and Molly Shannon definitely pushes it to the next level.

Look for the premiere of Animals on Friday Feb. 5th at 11:30PM on HBO.

Elvis Presley and President Richard M. Nixon really did meet and under bizarre circumstances and is often overlooked in the history books due to everything else Nixon was up to in his administration.

Well, that is until right around now. Their meeting has gotten the Drunk History treatment and is now a major motion picture with Kevin Spacey as Nixon and Michael Shannon as Elvis and it looks as crazy as that whole meeting has always sounded.

Watch the trailer for Elvis & Nixon here and then look for it in theaters in April.

Legendary Canadian sketch group Kids in the Hall reunited on Late Night with Seth Meyers and swapped stories about working under Lorne Michaels, how forward their show was, etc.

They went on tour last year and we can only hope that they’re going to get together again for more projects in more of 2016.
