Watch How Dumb Masculinity Can Be in an Art House Film in “Chevalier” Trailer

May 14, 2016
Uncategorized
athina rachel tsangari, chevalier, efthymis filippou, strand releasing

If you dug the darkly comedic dig at masculinity, Force Majeure, it looks like you might be into Athina Rachel Tsangari and Efthymis Filippou’s upcoming film, Chevalier.

Six men compete against each other in any they can while on vacation on a yacht in the Aegean Sea and, of course, get ridiculous with it. See for yourself in the trailer.

Also, know that Filipou co-wrote the dystopian romantic comedy, The Lobster, that just opened this week.

Look for Chevalier in theaters on May 27th.

Matt Donaher Returns to Conan and Puts on Another One-Liner Clinic

In the modern age of comedy, jokes in the form of one-liners have become an increasingly rare discipline and fewer and fewer comedians choose to focus in on such a skill.

Stand-ups like Matt Donaher not only keep the act of doing one-liners alive, but the execution is so good, it really shows off how precise the craftsmanship (structure, word economy, delivery, timing, etc.) of a joke can be.

Matt’s latest set on Conan is a great example of all of this.

Unbeknownst to Conan O’Brien, his longtime sidekick Andy Richter has had 18 books worth of rage published.

On top of how great of a bit this is, take notice how each cover consecutively zooms in on Andy’s face.

Here’s How Fox’s Live Action-Animated Hybrid “Son of Zorn” Will Look

As Phil Lord and Chris Miller are EP’ing on Son of Zorn, the mesh of live action and animation that the upcoming series is promising more than intrigued us.

The premise of a fantasy hero character having to scale down his epic life to a “9-5 grind” sounds fascinating, especially with hybrid aspect of the show.

Above, you can start to see how that’s going to work as Jason Sudeikis will voice Zorn and Johnny Pemberton is shown as a normal human being.

So far, this all works for us.

11 Network Television Comedies Just Got the Ax Including The Muppets, The Grinder, and Telenovela (Updated)

May 13, 2016
Uncategorized
bordertown, cancelled, castle, cooper barrett's guide to surviving life, galavant, grandfathered, muppets, telenovela, the grinder

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Many of these shows were in their first season.

Over the last day, the following shows got the ax:

Galavant (ABC)
The Muppets (ABC)
Castle (ABC)
Bordertown (Fox)
Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life (Fox)
Grandfathered (Fox)
The Grinder (Fox)
Telenovela (NBC)
Crowded (NBC)
Undateable (NBC)
Mysteries of Laura (NBC)

Of those, Castle, Undateable, Mysteries of Laura, and Galavant were the only shows listed above that lasted past their freshman season. It’s yet another TV season where we won’t get to see if many network freshman comedies would have ever figured out their formula or not. ABC and Fox especially lowered the ax over the last day, which makes you wonder if the big broadcast network’s will ever stop ordering a bunch of shows only to end up cancelling them.

This definitely looks really good for cable networks and streaming services that seem to be doing fine with their freshman series like TruTV and Amazon.

Looks like Adult Swim is going to continue to stay ahead of the curb.

Not only do they have an exciting crop of original series, specials, and pilots here, but they have a bunch of daily/weekly events that are scheduled like linear TV series, but will only be only live streaming online, then archived afterwards. Apparently, the success of sports show parody FishCenter has paved the way for more real time, interactive programming/content from Adult Swim.

Here’s what they’ve got going right at the moment:

SERIES/SPECIALS:

-A Robot Chicken: The Walking Dead Special
–Montana James-frequent Adult Swim informercial collaborators Nick Corirossi and Charles Ingram that is most likely an absurdist take on Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade.
–Mr. Neighbor’s House–Brian Huskey plays a rage-filled version of Mr. Rogers-esque host.
–Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America–Brett Gelman and Jason Woliner’s latest twisted, dark meta special with have a dinner where Brett attempts a conversation about race.

–Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace-Sam Hyde, Nick Rochefort, Charles Carroll finally get to bring their self-described “super pure tragicomedy” to TV.
–Brad Neely’s Harg Nallin’ Sclopio Peepio-A new “one-off bits, shorts and songs” filled show from China, IL’s Brad Neely.
–Decker: Unclassified-the action series parody starring Tim Heidecker gets upgraded to a full series.

PILOTS:

–Art Prison–Tom Kauffman and Paul Isakson get the guiding hand of Dan Harmon and Starburns Industries for this live action pilot that puts an America’s Got Talent-style show in the so-called Prison for the Performing Arts.
–Lazor Wulf-Henry Bonsu and China IL’s Daniel Weidenfeld brings us all a wolf that has a laser on his back and who just happens to believe love has no limit.

LIVE STREAM/CALL-IN:

–Stupid Morning Bullshit-call-in show that mixes delving into pop culture and setting things on fire. Weekdays at 8AM PST
–Williams Street Swap Shop-Viewers trade goods in a sort call-in swap meet. Weekdays at 10AM PST
–Crosswords-call-in show that seeks help finishing the NY Times crossword puzzle. Weekdays at 11AM PST
–FishCenter-Fish in a fish tank are made, via sports show style graphics, to look like they’re in a fiercely competitive league. Weekdays at 1PM PST
–Call of Karaoke-call-in karaoke is mashed-up with hosts trying to play various shoot-em up style video games. Wednesdays at 2:30PM PST
–Daytime Fighting League-Real people are pitted against each other in ridiculous competitions during the workday. Calls are taken from viewers wanting to weigh in on the “fight”. Thursdays at 2PM PST
–Sports Bitches-sports in the real and virtual world meet as what would be a normal sports shows gets another layer of the host playing sports video games on top of it. Thursdays at 3PM PST

Looks Like Dark Action Comedy from John Michael McDonagh “War on Everyone” Will Be Getting a North American Release

(via Deadline)

If you ever saw 2014′s Calvary, you should know that this ought to be good news.

John Michael McDonagh’s follow-up to the bleak, but fantastic mystery drama Calvary will be an action comedy called War on Everyone where Michael Peña and Alexander Skarsgård play two cops that extort every criminal they can find until they might have bitten off more than they can chew. Saban Films is close to getting it released stateside after premiering in Berlin.

We haven’t seen the film or any trailers, but the premise, McDonagh, and McDonagh’s statement on this deal, “In an era of increasingly heightened tensions across America between law enforcement agencies and the communities they vow to serve and protect, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Saban Films has the guts to take on U.S. distribution of War on Everyone, a film that is totally irresponsible, deliberately inflammatory and completely lacking in any redeeming social or moral value whatsoever. Venceremos!” have us more than intrigued.

If you follow Michael Ian Black on Twitter (and you should), you might take note of a hashtag he started #SportsFacts where he shares facts about sports that are so obvious that no one has even thought of them until now.

Well, we thought they were obvious until sports comedy show Garbage Time with Katie Nolan (which has thankfully returned to FS1 on Wednesdays at 9PM PST by the way) brought MIB in to respond to some #SportsFacts that they found to be questionable.

Watch the results of that “very official” inquiry here.

Even the most stubborn of kids might not hate eating vegetables quite like Connor Ratliff does. In Connor’s case, he’s a full grown adult and no one can tell him to eat his veggies or else.

Well, we guess his boss, Chris Gethard, can do that as a condition of interviewing one of Ratliff’s heroes, Tony Hale.

That’s exactly what happened and it’s even more surprising how much Connor can’t stand one of the most important parts of the food pyramid.

“Sing Street” Is The Feel-Good-80s-Rom-Com Musical That You Probably Need Right Now

John Carney, the masterful hand behind the grounded romantic musical Once from 2007, strikes again with his latest film, Sing Street.

The straight-forward romantic comedy formula gets woven through a unique window of being on the wrong side of the tracks in 80s Dublin and it really makes for something undeniably charming. Stellar performances from the ensemble cast really make Carney’s diegetic musicals work.

Also, Sing Street’s journey through 80s music and fashion balance well between poking fun at the trends of the time and non-ironically celebrating them.

If you’re in LA, this is where you can go see Sing Street right now.

All of this comes from a big donation from George Carlin’s daughter, Kelly Carlin.

In 2017, the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York will house a specific exhibit dedicated to the life of one of the biggest comedians of them all, George Carlin. As said above, journals, awards, notes, arrest records, and more will be featured and give insight to Carlin’s brilliant, meticulous comedic mind.

Now, Carlin has a street named after him, a museum exhibit, and probably only needs a biopic to posthumously keep up with Pryor.
