What Comedy Festivals Are Looking For in Comedians

Jenn Tisdale at Brightest Young Things did some wonderful legwork in finding out what comedy festivals are looking for in potential performers.

She asked the folks behind Bridgetown (Portland, OR), Women In Comedy Festival (Boston, MA), Charm City (Baltimore, MD), Comedy Exposition (Chicago, IL), Bentzen Ball (Washington D.C.), Hell Yes Fest (New Orleans, LA & Austin, TX), and Riot LA (Los Angeles, CA) and compiled this nice article of their answers and explanations at the link.

Chicago’s The Comedy Exposition Still Taking Submissions

In the absence of JFL Chicago, people are starting their own comedy festivals in Chicago such as the Onion/A.V. Club’s First Annual 26th Annual Comedy Festival and, most recently, The Comedy Exposition.

The inaugural Comedy Exposition in Chicago is open for submissions until May 10th (early deadline is this Sat. Apr. 26th) for comedians.

This comedy festival will take place July 11th-13th across three Chicago neighborhoods.

You Can Watch Pilot for Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham’s Playing House at USA Network

While the premiere isn’t until Apr. 29th at 10PM at the USA Network, you can watch the entire pilot of Playing House thanks to USA (the network, and the country as well, we suppose), the new series from Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham following their much too short lived series at NBC, Best Friends Forever.

Fox’s Animation Domination Going Off The Air, Staying Online

Fox has just announced that Fox ADHD will no longer be on aired on Fox on Saturday nights. It would seem that trying to have an Adult Swim on network TV didn’t really gel.

Though their various series and shorts won’t be on television, the brand will thankfully continue online.

Spike TV Paying Tribute to Don Rickles

Living comedy legend Don Rickles is getting his very own televised tribute special on Spike TV at the end of May. As David Letterman, Jon Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Regis Philbin, Tracy Morgan, Martin Scorsese, and more will be part of One Night Only: An All-Star Comedy Tribute to Don Rickles, we can only imagine that this is basically going to be a roast.

Mr. Warmth probably wouldn’t have it any other way.

The deadline to submit is Apr. 30th and there is a submission fee of $10 and would be a good opportunity to join in the improv scene here in LA, which is, whether you know it or not, pretty vibrant.

With the announcement of Maya Rudolph’s variety sketch special, you might have guessed that the David Koechner variety sketch show that NBC ordered a pilot of was unfortunately done for at NBC.

Hopefully, it can find a home elsewhere. Perhaps, it might even find that home at 11:30PM at Comedy Central that will be open next year.

The passing of the torch of The Late Show begins next week when Stephen Colbert visits David Letterman on The Late Show yet again.

Perhaps, the ceremony will be marked by Colbert going in and out of his character, which could just be him switching Dartmouth and Northwestern?

Grand Budapest Hotel Becomes Wes Anderson’s Highest-Grossing Movie Surpassing $100 Million Mark

Seemingly across the board, everyone loves Grand Budapest Hotel and the numbers are showing it. As a movie that started in limited release and expanded to a modest number of theaters compared to usual multiplex fare, it’s wonderful to see Grand Budapest Hotel make it past $100 million in gross ticket sales.

Even more fascinating is the fact that the majority of that $100 million came from overseas and Moonrise Kingdom and Royal Tenenbaums still made more money, for now, than Grand Budapest Hotel domestically. We can only wonder what this means for Anderson’s next movie and how big it might be in scope, cast, and budget.

We hope that Billy Eichner does Billy On The Street-esque bits throughout the evening, wandering throughout the audience.

FXx to Launch Simpsons Syndication with 12 Day Marathon

If, for some reason, you haven’t gotten The Simpsons on DVD box sets, you’ll be happy to know that in moving into syndication on FXx, there will be a 12 day marathon of The Simpsons to start it off.

We’ll see what the record books say afterwards, but, as far as we can tell, this would indeed be, as FX’s Jon Landgraf says, the longest continuous TV marathon in history.

Paramount TV Developing a Truman Show TV Series

While your knee-jerk reaction may be to say that The Truman Show might turn into what it was sardonically predicting, know that Burning Love, as a series, does a fantastic job of sending up reality TV dating shows.

You would do well to know that Paramount was also involved in Burning Love, so a Truman Show TV series might be in good hands.

Stephen Colbert to Replace David Letterman

Well, CBS isn’t waiting around to see what other choices might surface next year to replace Letterman. They’re putting their money on Stephen Colbert and it’s probably their best bet to compete with The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as well as draw a brand new young audience that Colbert has at his command.

This makes us curious to how Colbert will potentially leave his Colbert Report character at Comedy Central.
