Michelle Wolf Hosts the WHCD This Saturday and Her Netflix Show “The Break with Michelle Wolf” Premieres May 27th

This weekend, Michelle Wolf will be roasting the White House and the White House Correspondents as host of the Annual White House Correspondents Dinner.

Then, just about a month later, her new weekly topical series at Netflix, The Break with Michelle Wolf, is set to premiere. Trump will not be in attendance for either, but we’re sure he’ll be watching it somehow and probably whine about both on Twitter.

In any case, mark down 4/28 and 5/27 on your calendars.

Cosby Show Reruns Are Gone From Bounce TV Effectively Immediately Following Guilty Cosby Verdict

Today, a jury determined that Bill Cosby is guilty on all counts in the retrial of sexual assault claims by Andrea Constand.

There has been plenty of fallout for the former comedy legend since the heat of rape allegations arose in the last couple of years, but there is plenty more to come. Today, Bounce TV, a network that had reruns of The Cosby Show as part of their daytime schedule, is yanking the show that brought Cosby to the level of fame where he was able to safely commit his heinous crimes.

Cosby awaits sentencing, but there are still dozens of accusers he has yet to officially deal with. Once called “America’s Dad”, Cosby’s legacy undoubtedly will be looked back on as a “megalomaniac rapist”.

SNL Weekend Update’s Michael Che and Colin Jost Will Host 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards

Just in case you don’t remember, the last 5 hosts of The Primetime Emmys were Neil Patrick Harris, Seth Meyers, Andy Samberg, Jimmy Kimmel, and Stephen Colbert.

As such, this is the first time the Emmys have had more than one host share the stage in a decade as well as Michael Che being the first POC host of The Emmys since Bryant Gumbel over a score of years ago. Duos seem to be a good formula for hosts over the last decade (Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, Nick Kroll and John Mulaney) and perhaps that’ll prove true this time around too.

We are really curious what to see what Che and Colin Jost will do together on a bigger stage and out in front of a desk. We’ll be that it’ll have something to reflect on whatever Trump is tweeting around that time.

The 70th Primetime Emmys are set for Sep. 17th, 2018.

“I’m happy to announce that my @NetflixIsAJoke special “Warn Your Relatives” comes out on May 8th! So excited to have something I’m very proud of on @netflix!”

–@harikondabolu

Between this hour and The Simpsons’ controversial response to Hari’s documentary, Hari Kondabolu is having one hell of a Spring this year. Definitely set a reminder for May 8th to stream Warn Your Relatives.

Right about now (or anytime really) is a great time for a new hour special from the one and only Tig Notaro. Thankfully, that time is less than a month away.

Mark your calendars/set a reminder on your phone/etc.

Comedy Central 2018-2019 Development Slate Includes an Arturo Castro Sketch Show, a Pilot Based on the Life of Awkwafina, a Rory Scovel Basketball Comedy Pilot, This Week at Comedy Cellar

With Broad City coming to its final season, you’re getting a look at Comedy Central’s hopes for their future.

Arturo Castro, who plays Jaime on Broad City, will be the next bet for the cable network’s sketch series with Alternatino (there were pretty fun digital episodes of this by the way) . Also, in connection with Broad City, Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer will EP Gabe Liedman’s animated pilot Mall City USA.

This Week at Comedy Cellar will be the latest edition of Comedy Central’s vast collection of stand-up showcases series. However, this show will be focusing on comics developing fresh material including what they do behind the scenes.

Awkwafina, who audiences will get to know a little better when Ocean’s 8 comes out, is developing a pilot based on her life.

There is a pilot, Robbie, which probably affords the chance for Rory Scovel give a half-time sports speech. We are so on board for that.

If you though that the sketch show Friends of the People came to an end too early, there’s a chance you’ll get to enjoy alums Kevin Barnett and Josh Rabinowitz once more if their pilot Kevin vs. Josh goes to series.

Overall, there is plenty of promise here, leaving us to wonder if this will keep Comedy Central in the race with streaming services and premium cable networks that seem to be expanding their comedy line-ups more every season.

At Home With Amy Sedaris Is Getting a Second Season at TruTV

The part craft, part absurdist sketch show, At Home with Amy Sedaris, all hosted by Amy Sedaris, is indeed getting 10 more episodes at TruTV to be shot later this year.

We can only imagine that Amy Sedaris will double down on how Amy Sedaris-esque this show is for the second season and we can’t wait to see what that means.

Mike Rosenstein Goes From Red Hour to Setting Up His Own Production Company Sunset Rose Pictures

In LA, you’ve might have seen a thick, but neat beard and sunglasses roaming around the periphery of several live comedy shows not knowing that it was one of the power players in comedy, Mike Rosenstein.

Well, Rosenstein has quietly been pulling strings underneath the banner of Ben Stiller’s Red Hour, but now has his own banner, Sunset Rose, where he has projects in the works with Erica Oyama and Armen Weitzman.

Don’t be surprised if you hear the name Sunset Rose more coming up in the not so distant future.

Hulu Renews Sarah Silverman’s I Love You America, America

Given how the mission of this talk show is Sarah Silverman going outside of her own bubble and past her own biases to reach out to all sorts of different folks, we’re glad to hear that it’ll be focusing on the upcoming midterm elections when it returns for a second season.

Also, we just love how I Love You, America has shown a whole different, beautiful side to Sarah Silverman. In general, it’s a more aspirational, positive comedy talk show, which is pretty much a unicorn these days.

A Bunch of Seeso Series and Special Just Found a Home at Starz

Take My Wife, Night Train with Wyatt Cenac, The UCB Show, Andy Richter’s Home for the Holidays, Sklar Brothers: Hipster Ghosts, Lachlan Patterson Live From Venice Beach, The Pistol Shrimps, Brian Posehn: Criminally Posehn and New York’s Funniest all just landed over at Starz and will be available on Starz’s own app and on-demand on May 1st.

Just in case you didn’t get around to watching anything on Seeso, there was a lot of innovative and fun stuff that was made and licensed over there. Hopefully, more people will come to realize that as they see Seeso shows and specials at other, more established networks and streaming platforms over the next year or so.

Two years have passed since Ali Wong’s first hour special that catapulted her into comedy fame and the wait for the next one, Hard Knock Wife, will be over next month on May 13th.

As mentioned above, that will be the date of Mother’s Day this year and might just make for the best day to release this special.

For Netflix’s Next Comedy Big Name Get, They’ve Lined-Up a SCTV Reunion Special to Be Directed by Martin Scorsese

The pull that Netflix has these days is undeniable.

The notion of Martin Scorsese doing a retrospective comedy special about a sketch comedy show wouldn’t have ever crossed our mind and yet, Netflix has not only gotten legendary auteur on board, but will have Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Dave Thomas, Andrea Martin, and Joe Flaherty reunited in conversation next month.

Second City Television, AKA SCTV, is one of Canada’s most renowned comedy exports and came into prominence right alongside SNL.

If you’re keeping a score, Netflix has a movie about National Lampoon and this special about SCTV. Maybe next will be a mini-series about Channel 101?

Comedy Central Renews Broad City for Fifth and Final Season and Signs Ilana Glazer & Abbi Jacobson to First Look Deal

Netflix has been pulling in the biggest names in comedy for well over a year now from networks, both broadcast and cable.

Looks like Comedy Central does not want to lose stars and creative forces Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson in a similar fashion. Thusly (and smartly) have given Broad City a fifth season and the duo a first look deal with the goal of producing more of their projects.

You can look for the final season of Broad City to air in 2019, but bet on seeing Ilana and Abbi on Comedy Central well into the 2020s.

“My first hour comedy special is taping June 19th at The Neptune in Seattle for @ComedyCentral. ????????❤️?❤️??❤️????. I need everyone to come out from Florence Oregon to Bellingham Washington. NW represent.”

–@RonFunches

It’s sincerely a mystery why it’s taken this long to give the wonderful, magical, hilarious Ron Funches an hour special (just go look up any of his clips on YouTube or listen to his album and you’ll want to see him do an hour just like we do).

We’re glad that it’s happening and we’ll all get a chance to see it on Comedy Central in the not so distant future. If you have a chance to catch it in Seattle, you should absolutely go get tickets here.

The Simpsons Tried Their Hand at Addressing the Issue Raised by Hari Kondabolu’s Documentary “The Problem With Apu”

If you’ve seen Hari Kondabolu’s doc “The Problem with Apu”, you’d know that one of The Simpsons’ longest running supporting characters, Apu, is voiced by Hank Azaria, a caucasian actor. This mark against the legendary TV series has flown under the radar for decades really until Hari’s documentary.

Last night’s episode attempted to address the issue of representation by effectively saying that The Simpsons now see the problem with Apu though it wasn’t a problem for them for so many years and aren’t exactly what sure to do about it at this moment. Kondabolu isn’t thrilled with this response since it really doesn’t offer any solution, but only a recognition of the issue he raised.

So, this cultural impasse remains with no definitive resolution coming at a specified date. However, that does make Hari pretending to be the voice of Hank Azaria on a god mic at his live shows even more poignant and hysterical.

If you want to watch The Problem With Apu, you can get it on iTunes here.

Trump Will Skip the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Again Because, Of Course, He’s Trump

Trump Will Skip the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Again Because, Of Course, He’s Trump

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a childish, ill-tempered, egotistical, sociopathic bully who is unfortunately President of the United States will yet again ignore the White House Correspondents Dinner, which is essentially (and has thankfully always been) a “POTUS Roast”. It should be noted that if you can’t take a joke, that’s one big reason amongst many big reasons you shouldn’t be in a position that used to be referred to as “leader of the free world”.

In an interesting twist, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be in attendance and other White House staffers are encouraged to attend as well.

Michelle Wolf is hosting this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner and we have no doubt that will pull absolutely zero punches. What will be interesting to see if Trump tweets about it in real time and if Wolf would potentially to respond to it during the broadcast. That may sound crazy, but, then again, crazy is pretty normal these days.

Tiffany Haddish to Executive Produce “Unsubscribed” Comedy Series in Development at HBO,

In 2018, you will have seen Tiffany Haddish do stand-up, be an actress in several different TV shows and movies (possibly even an animated series), be the spokesperson for Groupon, and just announced, an executive producer for a series project on black beauty and feminism via an “Instagram hustle” from Xosha Roquemore and Danielle Henderson.

It’s only the beginning of April, so don’t be surprised if this killer multi-hypenate career of Haddish expands even further before 2018 closes out.

Bo Burnham’s Latest “Gay Kid and Fat Chick” To Be Directed by Amy York Rubin

Bo Burnham continues to blaze a trail from behind the scenes. This year alone, he has made plenty of great noise with directing Chris Rock’s latest special and his own feature length film Eighth Grade.

Continuing in that direction, Burnham’s next project, which he wrote and will produce, is called Gay Kid and Fat Chick, centering on teenagers taking on their bullies via their alter egos, will be helmed by veteran TV director Amy York Rubin.

It’s totally up to Bo and he certainly has gotten success exploring work behind-the-scenes in comedy over the last couple of years, but we can only wonder what he’d do if he were to another stand-up special/concert film/etc. If that is what the future holds for Bo, it’ll be unlike anything we’ve seen before, kind of like what.

‘A League Of Their Own’ Reboot Being Developed by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham at Amazon

As reboots and adaptations are still the orders of the days at studios and networks, a new version of the 90s sports comedy period piece classic A League of Their Own developed by half of Broad City and Mozart in the Jungle’s Will Graham sounds kind of exciting to us.

There’s no word on what the “modern take” exactly will be yet, but we are intensely curious how Abbi and Graham will make A League of Their Own that connects for 2018 beyond just tapping feminism’s current hot streak.

“Just turned on my wifi on our flight to Chicago and found out that #CrazyExGirlfriend has been renewed for a final season.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has always been a show that does everything, from top to bottom, on its terms, especially being a dark musical rom com done from a feminist perspective and getting acclaim from the get go and subsequently winning awards.

Something tells us that Bloom, Aline Brosh McKenna, and company are going to keep doing just that as they will bring Rebecca Bunch’s story to a close.

“Blown away by @iamjohnoliver’s new book, A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo..”

–@MaxMutchnick

What started as a highly satirical, well-crafted prank by John Oliver and Last Week Tonight on VP Mike Pence turned into an Amazon bestseller and has now become an actual gesture of inclusivity, support for LGBTQ rights, love, and community as demonstrated today by Mutchnick’s move to donate copies of the book to schools in Indiana, Pence’s home state.

This is further evidence of original suspicion that comedy can actually make a direct difference for good. Let’s hope all of these Indiana grammar schools take Max Mutchnick up on his offer.

Staffs of The Onion, The A.V. Club, and Clickhole Have Unionized at WGA East

Some of the cleverest writers around should be part of the Writers Guild of America, no?

In a way, you can see this as comedy on the Internet “growing up” and becoming more of a viable and sustainable endeavor. Onion Inc., the umbrella that operates The Onion, The A.V. Club, and Clickhole under the bigger umbrella of Fusion Media Group, still has yet to hammer out a specific agreement with WGA East, but it seems that they’re ready to come to the bargaining table.

So, in the not so distant future, comedy writers can tell their parents that writing satirical headlines can get them guaranteed pay and benefits.

Award Winning Comedy-Horror/True Crime Podcast “The Last Podcast on the Left” Coming Out With a Book

One of our all time favorite podcasts, The Last Podcast on the Left, is coming to the book game with Last Book on the Left, Volume 1: Serial Killers.

Not only are we excited that Marcus Parks, Henry Zebrowski, and Ben Kissel will be publishing a book, furthering their dominance in the comedy-horror arena, but it would seem Vol.1 means that they are going to be publishing a series of books.

Currently, the LP on the Left team is writing the book, but we’ll definitely let you know when it goes up for pre-sale.

We can only imagine that there will be tons of hilarious footnotes throughout, some of which will probably argue with other footnotes specifically between Henry and Ben.
