TCB Debriefing 9/21/23: Ralph Barbosa, Hari Kondabolu, Matt Walsh/DTWS, Seth MacFarlane, Colin From Accounts

1. Seems like Netflix is picking their old pace of stand-up specials. Earlier this week, it was Luenell and now they’re set to release rising star Ralph Barbosa and his debut hour special on the streaming giant. Called Cowabunga, Ralph’s hour is set to premiere on Halloween, which should provide a nice non-scary alternative to those who are mostly looking to ignore trick-or-treaters or getting dressed up that Tuesday night. Here’s Ralph’s very chill announcement to prove that sentiment.

2. The absolutely brilliant Hari Kondabolu has just his touring dates for this Fall. Do not miss out on some of the smartest and most clever stand-up in any of these cities (even if you’re only kind of close to it). Tickets available at harikondabolu.com/tour.

3. Matt Walsh holds up from taking the floor on Dancing With the Stars until the WGA Strike is resolved (Deadline). So, this means more live improv from Matt Walsh until then?

4. Seth MacFarlane has now upped his total contribution to the Entertainment Community Fund, a general fund for those affected by double strike, to $6 million in total (Deadline). Hope that the strike is referenced in plenty of episodes of the multitude of shows that MacFarlane has a hand in (especially The Orville).

5. The latest comedy export from Australia will come in the form of Aussie hit TV series Colin From Accounts on Paramount+ on Nov. 9th. Take a gander at how charming their accents are amidst an absurd meet cute.

6. We’ll leave you with this: Was anyone thinking that comedians were telling the 100% unembellished truth, ever? How is that even news?

TCB Debriefing 8/1/23: This Fool, Two Dykes and a Mic, Toast of Tinseltown, Disenchantment, Seth MacFarlane

1. The second season of one of our favorite comedies right now, This Fool, not only premiered last week, but dropped all episodes on Hulu for your binging pleasure. Get into it and you might just find a great poke at The Bear and Burning Man.

2. Rachel Scanlon and McKenzie Goodwin, hosts of one of the best queer podcasts around, just kicked off a gigantic Two Dykes and a Mic tour across North America that will last you almost the way to Thanksgiving. Go get tickets right now right here.

3. If you can’t get your Matt Berry fix quick enough when waiting for the next episode of What We Do in the Shadows, be thrilled to know that Toast of Tinseltown is now streaming free, at your convenience, on Roku.

4. Matt Groening’s Disenchantment is going to come to a close with season five on Netflix come Sept. 1st on Netflix. Five seasons is more than most shows last these days, but it’s unfortunately far from Groening’s other show, The Simpsons, which is currently at 34.

5. Kudos and cheers and applause to Seth MacFarlane as he just made a $1 million donation the Entertainment Community Fund to support those entertainment industry workers directly affected by the historic WGA/SAG-AFTRA Strike (Deadline). You don’t need to give a million, but you can donate to the ECF here.

6. In LA, let’s have a moratorium on calling any new comedy shows, Mixtape. There are too many already.

As you may well know, Wisconsin is a major swing state. As such, there are plenty of big fundraisers that are going towards making sure it swings left.

One of them, Laughing All the Way to the White House, will be one of the biggest comedy live-stream fundraisers that we’ve seen yet. Slated for this Tue. Oc.t 20th at 6PM PT/8PM CT/9PM ET, the live-stream will feature the likes of: Sarah Silverman, Sarah Cooper, Seth MacFarlane, Kumail Nanjiani, Mike Birbiglia, Hasan Minhaj, Lewis Black, Bassem Youssef, Chelsea Peretti, Whitney Cummings, Judd Apatow, Roy Wood Jr, Maria Bamford, Harry Shearer, Bradley Whitford, Sklar Brothers, Mandy Patinkin, Ahmed Ahmed, Cristela Alonzo, Greg Proops, Jackie Kashian, Will Forte, Ben Gleib, and more.

Make sure you have Starz tonight.

With the forces of Jonathan Ames, Seth MacFarlane, and Sir Patrick Stewart combined, we will all get the darkly comedic cable news show Blunt Talk starting tonight at 9PM on Starz.

One of the best parts of this is that it doesn’t interfere with any of the four comedy specials also premiering tonight.

Jonathan Ames and Seth MacFarlane’s Blunt Talk looks more and more like a much more fun version of The Newsroom that seems to have less rants and more of Sir Patrick Stewart really, really living it up.

He might even be overdoing it.

Watch the latest trailer here, then watch the premiere on Aug. 22nd at 9PM on Starz.

Looks like cable and online streaming networks are still killing it.

If you wish there was less histrionic ranting and more fun had with The Newsroom, this might be for you.

The only other time that Sir Patrick Stewart seems as off the wall as he will be in the new Starz’s series Blunt Talk from Jonathan Ames and Seth MacFarlane was his great appearance in a Colbert Report bit.

Just check him as a cable news anchor going about the gig like a veteran rock star in this trailer.

Ames and MacFarlane’s “Blunt Talk” Starring Patrick Stewart Gets First Teaser

One of the more intriguing series to come down the pipeline from Starz has to be Blunt Talk, which has Sir Patrick Stewart take a comedic turn in a series created by Jonathan Ames and executive produced by Seth MacFarlane.

Startz has already ordered two seasons of the series last year, which makes it’s premiere more enticing than it already is. A teaser was just released to further tantalized us all.

Here’s the plot summary from IMDB:

British newscaster Walter Blunt [Patrick Stewart] comes to Los Angeles, intent on conquering the world of American cable TV. Through the platform of a nightly interview show, Blunt is on a mission to impart his wisdom and guidance on how Americans should live, think and behave. Unfortunately, Blunt is constantly harassed by interfering network bosses, a dysfunctional news staff, and his numerous ex-wives and children. Blunt must now deal with the fallout from his well-intended but misguided actions, both on and off the air, with only an alcoholic manservant at his side.

So, we’re thinking this falls somewhere in the realm of The Newsroom meets Veep and thus we’ll be looking excitedly for a full trailer, hopefully soon.

Play A More Demented “Oregon Trail” in “A Million Ways to Die in the West” 8-Bit Game

In promotion for Seth MacFarlane’s upcoming western comedy A Million Ways to Die In The West, out in theaters May 30th, a online game has been created not unlike the addictive, but frustrating Oregon Trail from the youth of most of us.

The main difference in this game is that, as the movie title might suggest, it’s way easier to die.

Starz Orders 2 Seasons of Jonathan Ames-Seth MacFarlane Comedy ‘Blunt Talk’ Starring Patrick Stewart

Starz is slowly, but surely building up their comedy slate. Having two seasons of a live action comedy created by Jonathan Ames of Bored to Death fame and Seth MacFarlane executive producing is a good start.

An even better start is having that series star Patrick Stewart as an almost Ron Burgundy-esque character. With everything that this series, Blunt Talk, has going for it, it will be highly anticipated all the way until its 2015 premiere.

Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die In The West just released a red band trailer and, basically, it’s a present day MacFarlane movie with Western costumes, which looks like it could be riotously funny.

Give the trailer a watch and see what we’re talking about and subsequently get excited from just a few of the several ways that you could die “in the west”.

With all the animated series that he’s responsible for currently at Fox (Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show), Seth MacFarlane has his own department at Fox, right?
