The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 253: Rebecca Drysdale & Using The Force With Improv

April 10, 2025
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
improv, improv classes, la comedy, rebecca drysdale

Still, to this day, Rebecca Drysdale is one of the funniest improvisers we’ve ever seen. Coupled with her vast writing experience, we’ll take any chance to have her on TCB Field Report and what a chance it was for this episode. We legitimately intertwine The Force from Star Wars into improv theory and practice (along with some other IP based metaphors) for a marvelously comedy philosophy heavy episode.

Pick of the Day: Birds. Bees. Bits (in LA) 4/29

A comedy show that has a line-up of Rebecca Drysdale, Paul Scheer, Rachel Bloom, Mano Agapion, and Ify Nwadiwe, no matter what the concept is, is very much worth your hard earned money to see.

Come Monday, April 29th @ 7:30PM at The Clubhouse, this beyond stellar cast is going to discuss the eternal topic of “the birds and the bees”. Thus far, there is no real further description by Clubhouse founder Rebecca Drysdale as to what this query might entail other than sex experts Dr. Sandra Daugherty and Dr. Christene Lozano will be on hand, ostensibly, to also explore this comedic quest with “87% gay writer Rebecca Drysdale”.

In any case, some brilliant improv and some sexual revelations will be had and that should very much make you want to RSVP for a seat at Clubhousebusinesscenter@gmail.com right now.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 91: Rebecca Drysdale & Changing with Change

Rebecca Drysdale has not only been one of the best all around comedy folks that we know with writing on Key & Peele and having the longest running UCB Cagematch record with Hebecky Drysbell (partnered with Heather Anne Campbell), but is the founder of the magical DIY-as-can-be comedy venue The Clubhouse, which has thankfully survived to this side of the pandemic (and will need your help to continue to survive on this Kickstarter). She joins in with Jake Kroeger and TCB Field Report this week to talk how doing punch up for superheroes was her salvation after having one of the Tonight Show’s shortest stints of being a head writer and getting into the nitty gritty philosophy of doing comedy as a career. It’s the sort of beautiful conversation where time just faded away.

Also “hot” takes on Lorne Michaels potentially retiring from SNL, Emmy rule changes for comedy and drama, and more.

Help LA Indie Improv’s Clubhouse Reopen with This Kickstarter

November 24, 2021
News
crowdfunding, indie improv, kickstarter, los angeles comedy, los angeles venue, rebecca drysdale, reopening

So many venues and things in comedy fell victim to the pandemic in one way or another. We won’t bring the mood down by listing those yet again, but, odds are, you have mourned the things that have closed and gotten anxious over the things in comedy whose fate is yet to be determined.

Fortunately, one of the things that will survive is one of LA comedy’s beloved indie improv venue, The Clubhouse, nestled in a very large strip mall on Vermont Ave. in Los Feliz. Dozens and dozens of improv shows as well as some sketch, stand-up, clowning, and other wild comedy experiments were held lovingly at one of the The Clubhouse’s two rooms.

We were thoroughly worried that it was going to be a place that was indeed going to close as a result of having to be dark for so long. That is not the case as you now know, but they will need help reopening. There is back rent that’s due and many long overdue and necessary repairs that The Clubhouse needs. That’s why its amazing and gracious founder, Rebecca Drysdale, is doing this very Kickstarter to have the Clubhouse rise from the ashes once more (and make sure no one gets tetanus from the security gate).

Please support a LA comedy venue that was a home for so many, big and small, weird and weirder, etc. etc. Do so on Kickstarter here.

One Jason Van Glass will be attempting to do 10+ hours of improv at The Clubhouse this coming Wednesday.

That might be breaking some kind of record. Even if it’s not, it’s an impressive feat to take on and he’s doing it for a great cause (collecting donations for the Southern Poverty Law Center) AND will have a great line-up of fellow improvisers joining him throughout throughout the whole run.

All Time UCB Cagematch Champs Hebecky Drysbell Will End Their 78-0 Run Undefeated

Before you get worried about catching Hebecky Drysbell once more, know that they’re getting their own recurring show at UCB here in LA.

For 78 weeks, Heather Anne Campbell and Rebecca Drysdale, otherwise known as Hebecky Drysbell, put on a clinic of long form improv that was consistently brilliant and innovative with a dash of the right bit of mischief. It’s why they made our year end lists.

In that time, beat all of their opponents including the previous Cagematch champion record holding team Heather & Miles that Heather was also a part of.

The UCB Cagematch tonight will feature two new challengers that will face off against each other and a special Cagematch farewell performance from Hebecky Drysbell. It should come as no surprise that tickets to the show are sold out.

Like we said earlier though, you’ll have another chance to see Heather and Rebecca together again as they’ll have a regularly scheduled show at UCB. We’ll be sure to let you know when that gets going.

Heather Anne Campbell Might End Up Breaking the UCB Cagematch Record She Helped Set

May 20, 2016
Uncategorized
heather & miles, heather anne campbell, hebecky drysbell, improv cagematch, rebecca drysdale, ucb, upright citizens brigade

Simply put, Heather Anne Campbell (who just happens to be on the new Whose Line Is It Anyway?) is one of the best improvisors around right now.

At any comedy theatre that hosts improv comedy (especially long form improv), there is usually some sort of “cagematch” that pits improv teams of that theatre/school against each other and having the winner advance or return to face another competitor The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre has had a long tradition of doing this on a weekly basis in the theaters that they have on either coast. Also, at UCB, if your team loses, your run is over (i.e. go undefeated or bust).

In LA, the record for Cagematch wins is 50 (that’s almost an entire year of consecutively winning) currently held by the improv duo Heather & Miles. That record is about to get challenged by another improv duo, Hebecky Drysbell, which is currently at 49 wins.

An interesting twist to this historic Cagematch coming up is that one Heather Anne Campbell (whose work currently spans The Midnight Show, Fox ADHD, Party Over Here, and way more) is on both teams. Heather is the ‘Heather’ in Heather & Miles (Miles is another fantastic veteran improvisor Miles Stroth) and she is also one half of Hebecky Drysbell (Rebecca Drysdale, also another fantastic improvisor and writer on Key & Peele, is the other half).

So, next Wednesday at UCB Franklin, Heather will be playing both sides and simultaneously trying to break and defend her own seemingly untouchable Cagematch record. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the show is already sold out. However, per usual at UCB, there will be a stand by line on the night of.

If you can’t go to the Del Close Marathon in NYC this year, this might be the one of the big improv events to catch on this side of the country.
