TCB Debriefing 4/26-5/3: SF Sketchfest, Ian Abramson, Dave Merheje, Peabody Awards, Alex Edelman/Tonys, Keke Palmer/SZA, Scooby Doo, Chonga Girls, The Ugly Stepsister, Netflix, Jerry Seinfeld

1. SF Sketchfest, one of the biggest comedy festivals in the entire world, is now taking submissions for (pretty much) anything and everything for next year’s festival (Jan. 16th-Feb. 2nd). Find out more details, deadlines, submission fees, and more at sfsketchfest.com/get-involved.

2. Ian Abramson has told jokes in a shock collars controlled by the audience, challenged comedians to perform in an empty space while an audience watch a live feed from a remote location (and this was well before the pandemic), and even created his own DIY version of SNL when COVID-19 indefinitely postponed Saturday Night Live in 2020. With such daring feats, it’s almost unbelievable that Ian hasn’t done the simple, tried and true format of a comedy special (especially since Ian is one of the most original and purely silly comedians working today). Thank goodness for Heist, Ian’s first hour special that was just released by Comedy Dynamics, which, effectively is a greatest hits of the beautifully intricate absurdist comedy that Ian has perfected. Many a time there is a dual joy to be had from an Abramson bit in the mere spectacle of him being able to do it (or survive it in the case of the shock collar) and how surreally and deeply funny it really is. Suffice it to say that if you’re pining for the stand-up of 70s Steve Martin, get into everything Ian Abramson right now.

3. Dave Merheje continues his well deserved ascent in comedy with a killer Don’t Tell set. Per usual, Dave blurs the line between being off-the-cuff and doing material better than almost anyone since he’s so extremely present on stage. Please enjoy his set here.

4. The Career Achievement and Trailblazer Award for this year’s Peabody Awards are going to comedy with the honors going to the comedy legend Mel Brooks and potential comedy legend in the making Quinta Brunson (Variety).

5. Alex Edelman will be getting the T of EGOT covered very soon because of the brilliance of Just For Us.

6. Don’t be surprised if the upcoming Keke Palmer and SZA buddy comedy from Issa Rae is the buddy comedy you didn’t know you were waiting several years for (Deadline).

7. Though it’s far from a sure thing, Tinseltown is dead set on cashing in on live action versions of animated IP, hence another go at a live action Scooby Doo (Deadline).

8. Fingers crossed that The Chonga Girls will have the magical ingredient to make multicam work (it’s a long way to fall from Seinfeld to Big Bang Theory, FYI) as a concept again with their CBS project in development (Deadline)

9. If you were wondering if there was going to be some sort of gritty reboot of all the Disney canon following Winnie the Poo: Blood and Honey, indeed that is a thing. Just check the villain origin story vehicle that is The Ugly Stepsister coming as the first feature from Norwegian director Emilie Blichfeldt (Variety).

10. Netflix is sticking with their stars by giving specials to pretty their biggest stars (that don’t keep tripling down on problematic trans jokes) Ali Wong, Bert Kreischer, Deon Cole, Fortune Feimster, Gabriel Iglesias, Jo Koy and Michelle Buteau. Wonder if they’ll ever get back to their roots when started off with a not-yet-famous Ali Wong, Tom Segura, and Jen Kirkman.

11. We’ll leave you with this: Jerry Seinfeld is still not over not being able to do his iPhone bit at colleges?

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 65: Robby Hoffman & Knowing Thyself

If you’ve come to a point of being so in tune with who you really are, as Robby Hoffman has, you might have fared well, personally and otherwise, during lockdown. Hoffman is so masterfully herself whether on stage or in the writers room or in her personal life that taking on the pandemic was akin to taking care of business.

Hoffman joins TCB’s Jake Kroeger for an exploration of Robby’s seemingly unflappable nature and the myriad of things she has been juggling this whole time from her call-in show on Planet Scum to her project Rivkah at Showtime. Also, “hot” takes on Ziwe getting renewed, Peabody Awards going to Colbert and Ted Lasso, and the final week of Conan.

Note/correction: Andrew Yang answered “Times Square” to Ziwe asking his favorite metro stop in NYC and Robby found that so very funny.

The Good Place, Nanette, Barry, and more Comedy Set To Win Peabody Awards

The entertainment recipients of The Peabody Awards were just announced and comedy almost swept the whole category.

The Good Place, Hannah Gadsby’s Nanette, Barry, The End of the F***ing World, Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, and Steven Universe are all set to be honored with a prestigious Peabody Award soon. We’re glad to see that not-talked-about-enough End of the F***ing World and animated series Steven Universe are getting honored here as well as The Good Place receiving an award at a time when it should be regularly racking them up.

Also, we would like to note how great it is that nearly every tone in comedy is covered in this collection of winners.

The 77th Peabody Awards, one of the more prestigious awards to be bestowed in media, just named a few of their winners ahead of the ceremony on May 19th in NYC with host Hasan Minhaj.

As far as comedy is concerned, several comedy series scored a Peabody including:
American Vandal
Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King
Insecure
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
SNL: Political Satire 2017
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

On top of that, living and still working comedy legend Carol Burnett will be honored individually with a Peabody Career Achievement Award.

It should be noted that comedy pretty much dominated the entertainment category for the Peabodys this year, probably more so than in any other year in recent memory.

This year’s Peabody Awards will honor three of the more praised comedies on television right now, Atlanta, Better Things, and Veep.

That seems to fit into their prestigious brand of recognizing excellence in storytelling, especially with how relevant all three of those shows are. Specifically, they give a deal of visibility for race relations, feminism, and politics with in their own singular, inventive way.

Also, score another big win here for FX with Better Things and Atlanta.

They announced the winners for their “Entertainment” category this morning and will announce the winners in News, Radio/Podcast, Children’s, Education, and Public Service on April 25.

All three series put an emphasis on giving different perspectives while spinning an award-worthy comedic tale.

The Peabody Awards are on track to getting mentioned in the same conversation as the Emmys, the Golden Globes, etc. on top of being the prestigious awards that they have always been.

Having shifted from an afternoon announcement to a telecast and a whole evening affair, The Peabody Awards have really stepped up their game since 2015. Last year, they had Fred Armisen host and now they’re having another high profile comedian in Keegan-Michael on board to host this year.

The actual event will happen on Saturday, May 21st, but there will be a special that will air a few weeks later on June 6th at 8PM on Pivot.

Amy Schumer, along with Inside Amy Schumer co-creator/executive producer Dan Powell and writer/executive producer Jessi Klein talk on how honored they feel to win the prestigious Peabody Award.

There are other things on TV besides the return of True Detective tonight and one of them doesn’t require you to change the channel.

Tim Robbins and Jack Black delve into the absurdities of geopolitical snafus on HBO’s latest comedy series The Brink starting at 10:30PM on HBO.

The televised special for this year’s Peabody Awards premieres at 9PM on Pivot and you can see what hijinks host Fred Armisen got himself into as well as that kiss between Tina Fey and Amy Schumer and more.

Between the three, they’ve shot salmons out of a cannon, announced the year of the ass, and had a trick pregnancy. Know that they’re all doing important work.

The latest comedy recipients of the prestigious Peabody Award will be Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on HBO, Inside Amy Schumer on Comedy Central, and Jane The Virgin on The CW.

If you take a look at winners from years past, comedy definitely has had an upswing with The Peabody Awards as of late and we hope that trend continues.

The shows will receive awards at a ceremony on May 31st hosted by Fred Armisen.

Add another thing to the amazing set of things that Fred Armisen is juggling including bandleader at Late Night with Seth Meyers, doing Portlandia.

The prestigious Peabody Awards that honor excellence in broadcasting in all forms is now getting an overhaul that will include the ceremony being televised on Pivot and hosted by none other than Fred Armisen.

Armisen already has awards hosting experience under his belt, most recently with The Spirit Awards. The special that will make it to air will not be live, so we wonder if Armisen will have even more up his sleeve.

Interestingly enough, it would seem that The Peabody Awards, most of which go to documentaries and hard hitting journalists, gave comedy more of a nod than The Oscars did this year.
