TCB Debriefing 11/9/23: SAG-AFTRA Strike, Please Don’t Destroy, Coyote vs. Acme, Inside Out 2, Ms. Pat

November 9, 2023
News
coyote vs acme, inside out 2, ms. pat, please don't destory, sag-aftra, seth meyers, treasure of foggy mountain, union strong

1. TENTATIVELY (don’t mean to be a killjoy here), the SAG-AFTRA strike over, which would, TENTATIVELY, bring the historic double strike between the WGA and SAG-AFTRA to a close with both unions getting pretty much want they wanted. With that in mind, when all is said and done, let history remember that the AMPTP made both unions wait over a hundred days to agree to their demands.

2. Rather than waiting for Saturday night/Sunday morning for your next hit of Please Don’t Destroy, here’s the first 4 min. of PDD’s first feature length movie, The Treasure of Foggy Mountain.

3. One has to wonder if David Zaslav shelving a Wiley Coyote live action/animated hybrid movie (that has tested well in focus groups) as a tax write-off (Deadline) is him being a spoiled sport kicking rocks since the strike ending in the favor of the unions?

4. As much as Pixar movies have been boiled down to kind of a precise emotional science these days, one might ponder the choice for them to push forward with a sequel (considering people essentially know what they’re doing now). Yet, here we are with the trailer for Inside Out 2 with the introduction of Maya Hawke as Anxiety. Take a gander at the first teaser here, then look for it in theaters come June 2024.

5. Ms. Pat hosts a court show now, but don’t be surprised if she has a talk show in the not so distant future. Just watch her with the undeniable charm that an ex-drug dealer-turned-affable comedian that only she possesses on Seth Meyers.

6. We’ll leave you with this: Who is staying in town in LA for the holidays to do/see comedy/not leaving us hanging after the 3rd week of December?

TCB Debriefing 10/23/23: Netflix Verified Stand-Up, Sophie Buddle, Ms. Pat, Whitney Cumming OFTV, If You Were the Last, Desus Nice

October 23, 2023
News
daily show, desus nice, don't tell, if you were the last, ms. pat, netflix is a joke, sophie buddle, stand up comedy, verified stand up

1. First, The Standups, then came The Comedy Lineup. Now, Netflix is having a (slightly) more creative name for their handpicked stand-up showcase series with Verified Stand-Up. Asif Ali, Dulcé Sloan, Gianmarco Soresi, Isiah Kelly, Leslie Liao, Nimesh Patel, Robby Hoffman, Rosebud Baker, Sabrina Wu, and Vanessa Gonzalez have short sets that will premiere on the streaming giant come Tues. Nov. 28th.

2. Please enjoy the oh so clever (and honestly, kind of naughty, but mostly very clever) Don’t Tell set from one of Canada’s finest comedy exports, Sophie Buddle.

3. Watch the amazing true story of Ms. Pat going from being a plaintiff on Judge Joe Brown to be a beloved touring headlining comedian that is going to have her own small claims court show on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

4. Whitney Cummings is doubling down on OFTV (the non-NSFW arm of OnlyFans) by having her sixth special, Mouthy, premiere and exclusive stream on OFTV come Nov. 15th. Already, she made a big splash with her first OFTV exclusive, The Roast of Bert Kreischer, presented by Cummings. So far, if you want to watch, OFTV doesn’t need a subscription fee or your e-mail (and we’re pretty sure not part of the AMPTP?)

5. Peacock is coming out what might be the cutest space based rom com with the Zoe Chao and Anthony Mackie two-hander, If You Were the Last. Take a gander here and, if you’re digging it, you can stream it now on Peacock.

6. FYI, it’s Desus Nice week at The Daily Show with still no permanent host.

7. We’ll leave you with this: generic rock really feels like the wrong pick for trailers for stand-up specials, despite it being the go-to trailer music for almost every comedy special promo.

TCB Debriefing 9/20/23: COVID-19 Gets Shepherd/Kimmel, Luenell, Ryan Reynolds, Ms. Pat, Nate Craig, Voy! Voy! Voy!

September 20, 2023
News
covid-19, jimmy kimmel, luenell, ms. pat, nate craig, netflix, ryan reynolds, sherri shepherd

1. Sherri Shepherd, Jimmy Kimmel, and the staff of a Steve Martin/Martin Short show all got COVID-19 and have had to postpone/cancel whatever shows they were doing (THR). This is great time to remember that “endemic” doesn’t mean “disease free”.

2. Take a gander at the Luenell‘s Netflix special, Town Business, with the official trailer. Curiously, not only is it presented by Dave Chappelle, but branded as Chappelle’s Home Team. Wonder if they have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy with pronouns on that team.

3. Ryan Reynolds will be the latest recipient of the Robin Williams Legacy of Laughter in support of Glenn Close’s Bring Change to Mind org, a children’s mental health NPO (THR). They would have to probably not invite Deadpool to this, right?

4. Ms. Pat will add judge to her resume by taking up a gavel and presiding over Ms. Pat Settles It on BET on Oct. 18th (Deadline). If there’s eventually some sort of competitive reality show that will pit Ms. Pat against Judge Judy and Chrissy Teigen, we won’t be surprised in the slightest.

5. Nate Craig, who released one hell of a special this year with Live at the Green Mill, has got some tour dates all around the country. Go get tix at natecraig.com/calendar.

6. Another country is going to submit a comedy to AMPAS for Oscar consideration. This time, Egypt is going with Omar Hilal’s Voy! Voy! Voy! a sports comedy about a man with normal vision trying his fortunes playing blind football (Deadline). Honestly, it should get some sort of distribution deal on the premise alone.

7. We’ll leave you with this: Guess Vegas is still aggressively relaxed on their COVID-19 measures.

In an Era of Truth Telling Comics, Ms. Pat’s Y’all Wanna Hear Something Crazy Is Still Something Wholly Original

February 8, 2022
News
comedy special, ms. pat, netflix, stand up comedy, y'all wanna hear something crazy

Drawing for the marrow, that’s to say, being brutally honest and unfiltered, in stand-up comedy has become commonplace the way that Jerry Seinfeld’s style of observational comedy used to be copied, both knowingly and unknowingly, by comedians by the dozens. Being thoroughly original and also standing out as a truth-teller in the 2020s of something of a feat as there have been countless stories podcasts, albums, specials, solo shows from many a comedian that espouse their wild former or current life. Thusly, the style in which comedians proudly wear their damage or trauma has its own formula that has seen plenty of success, but does feel oversaturated at times.

The idea of a former drug dealer getting on the straight and narrow by way of sharing their life in a humorously distilled sense isn’t even entirely new. Yet, Ms. Pat, former drug-lord-turned-truth-telling-comic, and her hour special Y’all Wanna Hear Something Crazy still feels like a hilariously sobering breath of fresh air.

At 49 years old, Ms. Pat has not only lived more life than most, but she earnestly engages with the current moment in a way that many comedians her age opt out of as a way to feel superior to the younger generations. So many times throughout her stories in Y’all Wanna Hear Something Crazy she boldly shows the many wild colors that her life is painted with, whether it’s talking about getting pregnant as a very young teenager or raising “crack babies”, but also tries her best to not espouse an agenda a la the “back in MY DAY…” angle of a joke. When touching upon class, race, sexual identity, family structure, Ms. Pat always comes back to her very personal experience as specific (and often, so damn blue) it can be, making something that we’ve never really heard or seen before in all of years of consuming comedy.

Even when it feels like she’s getting into dicey territory (your ears might perk up about when she talks about her lesbian daughter), Pat really doesn’t shy away from her own flaws and misgivings, which makes her version of truth-telling beautifully human on top of being just flat out funny.

Ms. Pat: Y’all Wanna Hear Something Crazy is now streaming on Netflix.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 75: Kelly McInerney & The New Landscape of Comedy

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
comedy scene, la comedy, ms. pat, steve harvey, uk comedy, what we do in the shadows

There is a vast new landscape to comedy as things may or may not continue to open up for live comedy here in the U.S. and across the world. Navigating this new world of comedy is, it would seem, as daunting as starting over, which is why we talk to LA staple Kelly McInerney about how she is figuring her way through a scene she already knew (and possibly looking across the pond to the UK for more opportunity). She’s also reviewed movies while stoned on the podcast she co-hosts, IMDWeed, leading to what movies they’ve missed out on watching high (2001: A Space Odyssey?!?). Finally, “hot” takes on Ms. Pat getting an hour special, What We Do in the Shadows’ After the Shadows, Steve Harvey getting his own court show.

Follow Kelly @hollyweirdo on IG and Twitter and listen to IMDWeed wherever you get your podcasts.

Ms. Pat Gets Very First Hour Special at Netflix

August 31, 2021
News
comedy special, hour special, ms. pat, netflix, stand up comedy

(via Variety)

Ms. Pat has lived through so much life that she could probably do several hours/solo shows/etc. and they’d all be captivating. Yet, it’s 2021 that’s proving to be a banner year for Ms. Pat as she has already gotten a lot more radars with The Ms. Pat Show and Netflix just announced today that she will be given her hour long stand-up special by the streaming giant.

If you’ve seen her do stand-up, listened to The Patdown, or heard/seen any sort of public appearance of hers, you’d know that an hour long Ms. Pat special was overdue. Her effortlessly unflinching and hilarious honesty about her past life dealing drugs and current life with all of that behind her make for some of the best stories we’ve ever heard on stage.

The hour long special ought to be chock full of such tales that will very likely feel tall, but are, most probably, very, very true.

The taping of Ms. Pat’s first hour special will tape at Atlanta Comedy Theater on Sept. 25 in case you’re in GA at the end of next month.

Comedy Central Launches Black Comedy Docu-series “Dark Humor”

As the art form of comedy continues to evolve, there have been plenty of documentaries and docu-series that examine how comedy, whether it be stand-up, sketch, improv, etc. has transformed over the decades. The examination of black comedians and their journey, often one that’s mutually exclusive from mainstream/white comedy, has not been as closely examined even though some of the most revered comedians of all time include Richard Pryor, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock.

So, Comedy Central’s new digital series, Dark Humor, offers such a look into the experience of black stand-up comedians today and their work that’s reflective of their black experience. It’ll feature plenty of clips as well as interviews from the likes of Baron Vaughn, Tommy Davidson, Sinbad, Nore Davis, Ms. Pat, Sonia Denis, Chloe Hilliard, Lil Rel Howery, Yamaneika Saunders, Roy Wood Jr., Josh Johnson, Damien Lemon, Jordan Temple, Open Mike Eagle, Rae Sanni, Cipha Sounds, Gina Yashere, and more.

They just launched Dark Humor just as Black History Month started and new episodes will come out every Mon. on Comedy Central’s YouTube channel.

You can get a taste of Dark Humor both with the series trailer as well as the very first episode which dives into the deep end by going into black comedy and American politics.

Hulu Orders Multi-Cam Pilot ‘Ms. Pat Show’ Based on Ms. Pat

Ms. Pat has one hell of a story going from walking tall in some mean streets to becoming a very funny national touring headlining comedian. Certainly, it’s the sort of the story that’s worth being a TV show.

Given the explicit and graphic nature of a lot of Ms. Pat’s stories, we are curious to see how it’ll play out in multi-cam format. Perhaps, they’ll take The Ranch’s approach on Netflix and have it be an explicit multi-cam show. We’re not sure how and if they’ll have to format the show (or not) for the typical multi-cam audience.

What we are sure of is that we’re glad that Ms. Pat has her own show because she is deserving to tell her story on television, both, as a comedian and one damn fascinating person.

While many a man can be distracted by a well-endowed bosom, that is not the way that Ms. Pat’s titties saved her from a shootout. It’s not a sentence you get to hear everyday, but it’s one that just happens to be singularly true.

Hear her whole story in the latest installment of This Is Not Happening with Ari Shaffir.
