The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 110: Brett Johnson & Bringing It All Back to the YARD

While it’s rare, there are folks that go and see almost the same amount of comedy that we do. It should go without saying that we enjoy the company of those folks, which is exactly why we had a splendid chat with the YARD Theater’s uber-friendly co-manager Brett Johnson. With his involvement, Brett has made a home for some of the more genre and tone bending types of comedy and, thusly, we have spent a good deal of time standing in the back and cracking up.

This week, we chat with Brett about The YARD’s journey through the last few years and where it looks to head. Also “hot” takes on Chappelle getting taclked, Corden ending his run at The Late Late Show, and the first reveal of Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al Yankovic.

Pick of the Day: Yard Apples (LA) 6/24

One of the main great things that The Yard Theater in LA (formerly known as The Fake Gallery in a past era of comedy) had going just before lockdown was their recurring show, Yard Apples.

As we mentioned before, The Yard had done wonders to gussy themselves up and it was prime, before March 2020, to have so many more lovely comedy, music, and variety shows within its walls. They’ve thankfully survived and now is your chance to go see what we’re sure will be marvelous programming starting with Yard Apples on this Thurs. Jun. 24th at 8PM PT.

This first Yard Apples back has the venue’s proprietor himself, John Ennis, along with the amazing Chris Walsh and Frank Fairfield, host LA favorites Amber Preston, Jono Zalay, Kiran Deol, Jackie Kashian, and Ron Lynch.

Tickets are only $10 (proof of vaccination required at door). Go get them here.

Please Enjoy “Ghost Family”, a Sensationally Absurdist Sitcom Pilot from Andrew Michaan and Zed Cutsinger

From the minds of Andrew Michaan and Zed Cutsinger comes a full length pilot for Ghost Family, a show we wish would get picked up to series somewhere (though some NSFW content in it probably means it’s better suited for certain networks or streaming services than others).

In the way Childrens Hospital took on medical procedurals, Ghost Family goes to the nth degree and beyond to send up family sitcoms and we loved ridiculous minute of it.

Watch and enjoy it here (and maybe spread the word enough so it does become an actual TV show somewhere).

Though you may have never thought of a Venn diagram where fans of teen drama and Westerns might overlap, Julia Prescott’s Townies realizes a world where the twain will meet in a fun genre mash-up.

Also, folks that we really want you to see more of, Natalie Palamides, Josh Androsky, Brodie Reed, Dave Child and John Ennis, star in the series.

See for yourself in this trailer.

If you’re digging all of this, you can stream all six episodes of Townies on Wednesday, January 24th on the mobile streaming app, Blackpills.

With Bob & David is coming in a couple of weeks to Netflix and to combat that itch you’re probably having, here’s an entire sketch where the gang of Bob Odenkirk, David Cross, Jay Johnston, John Ennis, Paul F. Tompkins, and the voice of Scott Aukerman are all together again.

If this doesn’t make your Monday, we don’t know what will.

Indeed, Much of The Gang From “Mr. Show” Is Back For “With Bob and David”

(via Deadline)

Plenty of .gifs of both Mr. Show and With Bob and David side by side with the same cast members are going to be made.

Paul F. Tompkins, Brian Posehn, John Ennis, Jay Johnston, Mark Rivers and Dino Stamatopoulos have rejoined Bob Odenkirk and David Cross in their new sketch series With Bob and David at Netflix (that also includes one behind the scenes special).

Going off the idea that Bob and David are ex-Navy SEALs for this new series, it now makes us curious if Paul, Brian, John, Jay, Mark and Dino will also all be ex-Special Forces.
