Just Like All The Other Riot LAs, You Should Have Been at Riot LA 2015

Once a year, The Riot LA Comedy Festival turns the ever blossoming Main St. in Downtown LA into an even more colorful affair. There are long lines delineated by pastel colored chalk and a concentrated distillation of some of the LA comedy scene’s finest as well as bringing in some of the funniest folks from around the country. In its third year, Riot LA has kept this phenomenon going to the point where it should become a time honored tradition to make a trek to Downtown LA.

If you didn’t happen to be in attendance last weekend for the festival, let us fill you in with some of our favorite moments at Riot LA 2015 (spoiler alert: there were no actual riots).

-NYC was well represented at Riot with great performances from Dan Soder, Dave Hill and his killer erotic short stories, Nick Turner, Sheng Wang, and Michelle Wolf who won the always crazy fun Happy Contest Time, a “stand-up contest” judged by Japanese school girls.

–Elisha Yaffe curated a fantastic series of offbeat, hysterical, fantastical, otherworldly, wonderful short films for “Weird Stories”. Whether it be the interconnecting bizarre events of an Interesting Ball from DANIELS or a video asking a stranger out while in costume from your job at a theme park from Andrew Peyton, the showcase proved short films (not viral videos) are very still much alive and are probably funnier than ever.

-Walking and talking showbiz encyclopedia Kliph Nesteroff chatted with the legendary Fred Willard. We were more than delightfully surprised to learn that Willard turned down the starring role in Airplane! and that, for a time when Fred was doing improv, he would have cut a scene short by have someone dressed up as a fairy that come out and announce the scene was over.

Giant thank you to our amazing headliners and everyone who came out to support live comedy, #superseriousshow & #riotla!

-The LA comedy institution that is The Super Serious Show made a great showing per usual with one of the best on-stage duos around Kate Berlant and John Early at the host’s helm. Jerrod Carmichael offered some of the funniest bits about Bill Cosby we’ve heard since the allegations made the news, especially since he’s gotten to meet and chat with Cosby just before all of the controversy rose to the fever pitch that it is at now. Also, Nate Craig had a highlight worthy, wire-to-wire set.

A very special drop in who is definitely not Bill Burr #RiotLA (photo by @callie_biggs)

-The one and only Bill Burr wore a fat suit to impersonate Pantera’s Vinnie Paul at The Goddamn Comedy Jam and we don’t need to elaborate further than on how the night went for the all out comedy rock show.

-Part installation artist/part comedian/part magical human being Kurt Braunohler dazzled yet again with his Roustabout show that included a sound effect operated wishing well, dog show dogs doing tricks, a lone trombone player, and snow here in LA. We didn’t know this was a dream of ours until Kurt made it a reality.

-One of the big headliners of Riot LA, Norm MacDonald, sold out the recently renovated and reopened, beautiful Regent Theater. Those in attendance for his high art dad-esque humor and persona were not disappointed.

-The marvelously absurd Sam Simmons did a whole solo show that toured through his inner psyche through a complex set of beats and pre-recorded dialogue with himself while also being completely self-aware. Despite Sam’s protestations here and there, which are also part of the charm of his act, the crowd at The Smell loved it.

-The meta-meta podcast “With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus” had the whole of The Downtown Independent Theater on board for podcast host Lauren Lapkus playing the character of a fake podcast “hosted” by guest Thomas Middleditch who is also playing a character. It was akin to the trippy visual sequence in 2001: A Space Odyssey, but done in comedy podcast form with a bit of a Southern affect.

–Margot Leitman and Giulia Rozzi’s Stripped Stories not only featured great, ribald stories, but a round of that classic party game “Never Have I Ever” where an audience member won by having intercourse while at a mental institution with one of the orderlies on his break in a laundry room. Never one to miss the gold coin on a comedy merry-go-round, Matt Braunger came to the stage as the orderly.

-The house party, drinking game comedy show known as Brew Haha got so out-of-hand, in a fun-spirited, responsible way, that many on the show took their clothes off on stage. It’s a pretty great way to make a house party happen in a downtown parking lot.

Maria Bamford prepares as @troyconrads observes #RiotLA (photo by @liezlwashere)

A photo posted by RiotLA (@riotla) on Jan 22, 2015 at 10:47am PST

-American comedy treasure Maria Bamford fully realized her mother, Marilyn Bamford, as a comedic character for an entire show, The Marilyn Bamford Collective. She was armed with a handheld vacuum, throw pillows, and the perfect imitation, which was made even more beautiful when the real Marilyn took the stage at the end of the show. At one point, Maria as Marilyn had noted comedian and impressionist Melissa Villaseñor  do an impression of Maria right in front of her.

It may be redundant in saying this, but we’re looking forward to a Riot LA in 2016.

LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival Recap: Days 1 and 2

comedy festival, downtown independent theater, funny or die, los angeles

People’s hunger for comedy shorts, whether they be sketches, web videos, actual in-depth produced short films, is undeniably on the rise. The viral video alone, arguably, has given a shot of life into comedy that has revitalized several other disciplines within the art form. So, why not have an entire festival for it? In it’s 4th year, the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival fills that void quite well over a scheduled, jam-packed 4 day extravaganza out of the Downtown Independent Theater (an LA destination for comedy, which also houses the amazing weekly stand-up show, Holy Fuck, and monthly comedy shorts screening series, Channel 101).

Under the guidance of Gary Anthony Williams, Jeannie Roshar, and Ryan Higman, a careful selection of films that has included the likes of Scott Thompson, David Alan Grier, Margaret Cho, and more have been screened to filmmakers, industry, and comedy fans alike. Funny or Die even put up a block of their own FOD Exclusives on opening night to lend even more legitimacy to a festival of comedy shorts, despite being plenty “legit” with being the largest comedy film festival in the U.S.

Here’s a quick rundown of what’s happened on Days 1 and 2:

-Interestingly enough, the Funny or Die block of videos had been all available for watching online for at least a week, if not a few months, but got uproarious laughter. There’s something to be said for the longevity of the approximately 3 min. comedy short film and the desire to watch and, consequently, laugh again at it.

-As said before, there’s a lot of star power to be seen here at the LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival. We’ve seen, in films, anyone from Scott Thompson to his Kids in the Hall co-star Dave Foley to Michael Cera to Margaret Cho twice to Wilmer Valderrama to David Alan Grier to even Morgan Spurlock & Ken Burns in the funny meta mockumentary Glue Man by Joe Pickett. Even though Funny or Die has set the precedent, it’s great seeing comedy big names doing short films.

-There have been plenty of selections from around the world, even so far as Australia, such as Nathan Lovejoy’s funny and endearing Animal Love that’s refreshing to see in a city so saturated in comedy.

-A surprising amount of non-dialogue (or barely any dialogue) shorts played quite well such as Gareth Tunley’s Special Forces (two special forces operatives can’t communicate quietly).

-The shorter has proved the better. Three of our favorite films thus far, Tony Yacenda’s Last Words (the disputing of a civil war hero’s last words), Adam Jones’ The Stay-At-Home Dad: Eat My Meat, and Jason Axinn’s Runyon (two “bros” running into each other in Runyon Canyon) are well under 5 minutes and played to big laughs.

-The panel with legendary comedy writer (SNL, Get Smart), Buck Henry, (even though he claims, “everyone in Hollywood is legendary) was fascinating as he dissected the ending of the Graduate, which he wrote. Apparently, Mike Nichols wished to have an ending that continued on-going internal generational struggle with Benjamin as he was on the bus with Elaine by giving no specific direction to the actors and having the camera roll out on the final shot. The author of the original novel Charles Webb abhorred the ending.

-Another great Buck Henry quote "I never mentioned the word ‘satire’ around Columbia [Pictures] or any other studio because it was a deal killer.”

-Thugs the Musical by Kevin Avery was astounding. Questioning the entertainment industry’s current take on black actors, Avery made an entire musical for marginalized black actors that don’t feel “ghetto” enough for the roles that black actors normally get. Hilarious, poignant, and thought provoking, it’s one of the best shorts we’ve seen so far.

We’re almost running late on a screening for Day 3, so, as you can read, there’s definitely more to come from the wonderful LA Comedy Shorts Festival.

1) LA Comedy Shorts Festival taking place mostly at the Downtown Independent Theater April 7th-11th.  Details here.

2) Last night at the Tomorrow Show presents WEIRD, I got a chance to see Paul Rust, Harris Wittels, and Michael Cassady as newly formed band “Don’t Stop or We’ll Die”, as one hell of a comical musical ruckus.  They’re playing at Meltdown Comics April 23rd 8PM $8.  Do. Not. Miss. This.

3) Continuing in awesome comedy music acts that I saw last night at the Tomorrow Show, I had a chance to be berated for not being from Portland by MOP, which was not at all shocking and also, hilarious.  Though this clip isn’t “music”, but since I don’t know where they’re playing next, it’ll have to do.

4) The Tip of the Hat this week (technically, last week) goes to none other than Paul F. Tompkins for making it to his 9th Anniversary Show.  Article to follow today (Seriously, it will come out later today.  I didn’t write/post it last night because I would have started punching walls if I stayed at the Bureau offices for another minute yesterday)

5) Tonight’s COMEDY CRAWL
Jeff Garlin’s Combo Platter @ UCB Theatre 6PM $2
ASSSSCAT @ UCB Theatre 7:30PM FREE

1) Meltdown @ Meltdown Comics IS simply what people should expect out of a good comedy show. Packed house and a great line-up (free beer also helps). Unfortunately, a large segment of the population, not only in LA, but around the whole country have a different idea of what a live comedy show actually is. Hilarious comedienne Chelsea Peretti pointed it out so poignantly during the evening when she mentioned how she would rather be a fat guy and THEN the audience would understand that “comedy was happening” and shout, “WE GET IT! WE GET IT!” The stereotype of an overweight vulgar man making fun of audience members then hitting on their date when they go to the bathroom has been reinforced by far too many comedy clubs. Meltdown has the potential to prove this stereotype FALSE of live comedy as I sat right in front as part of a crowd of about 100 for the entire show and was not made fun of once AND had a fantastic time. Host Jonah Ray, after thanking people for not watching Gallagher at Club Nokia, let Meltdown rip with awesome performances from Ali Wong, Jerrod Carmichael, Randy Liedtke, Nick Kroll as force of nature Fabrice Fabrice, Seth Morris, Steve Agee, and Chelsea Peretti THEN Kumail Nanjiani apologized for not being there by texting a joke. Again, this is what people should expect from a live comedy show. Meltdown is every Wednesday 8:30PM $8 @ Meltdown Comics, 7522 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA.

2) The Jesse Miller Talk Show @ The Next Stage Theatre is the FUTURE of a live comedy show. Andre Hyland, as his absurdly fast-on-his-feet character Jesse Miller, hosts an off-air late night talk show that because of its brilliance, as sensational guest Joe Wagner commented, should be on TV. With completely dead-pan and completely hilarious musical sidekick Daryl and princess/straight-up girl/Jesse Miller Talk Show dancer Tanya, Jesse Miller takes absurdity in comedy to another level as he might seem like an unassuming yokel from Norwood, OH, but can rattle off quips, comebacks, and obscure Sonic Youth references with the best of them. Formatted with four amazing performers, a video of Jesse Miller (this edition included him in Cincinnati showing his Bengals Superbowl tattoo to people on game day), a heartfelt, bone-crushing song from Daryl, gut-busting interviews of all the guests, and an EATING CONTEST, there is no way you can beat entertainment like that for $5 on a late Tuesday night. “Straight-up hell yeah props” to Nicholas Rutherford, Melinda Hill, Joe Wagner, and Chris Fairbanks as last night’s line-up. The Jesse Miller Talk Show is on one Tuesday a month 11PM $5/one free beer @ The Next Stage Theatre, 1523 N. La Brea, Hollywood, CA (2nd Floor).

3) For all of you in the LA comedy community, the entire Comedy Bureau watched over 5 hours of live comedy yesterday.

4) For tonight’s COMEDY CRAWL, you need to discover instant cloning to not miss anyone of these shows. Seriously, get on it. Start off with Comedy Speakeasy @ TSR Loft 8PM (call 323-568-1616 to be audience member), then send your clone to Wil Anderson w/Brent Weinbach @ Hollywood Improv 8PM $14/2 item minimum, then “original you” go to The Josh & Josh Show @ Bar Lubitsch 8:30PM FREE, then your clone should go to Holy Fuck! @ Downtown Independent 9PM FREE, then you go to Facepush @ Flappers-Burbank 9:30PM $10/2 item min. Make sure to kill your clone at the end of the night, mostly to prevent any bad reality show being made from your lives.

5) Brand spanking new Comedy Bureau feature, as promised, OPEN MIC RUN. For all you comics trying the impossible by getting up more than once in LA try this: Go to SANDWICH SPOT 7PM, 3101 Ocean Park Ave, Santa Monica, CA, TKO SHOW @ 212 Cafe 9PM, 212 Pier Ave., Venice, CA, CAFE ON 2ND 7:30PM 7 S. 2nd St./$3 cover/10 min. at least., MARTY’S/THE OPEN MIC 5PM-11PM, 7351 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA $5 cover/free coffee & bottled water/go up as many times as you want. Just do it (and maybe get some laughs).

6) The Comedy Bureau will be live tweeting throughout tonight’s comedy odyssey. Follow here.

7) Announcing another new feature in the works: The Comedy Bureau will tip its proverbial hat, because we can’t afford a real one, to a single tweet a day from all the amazing LA based comedians it tracks on Twitter. Not only will they be retweeted, but they will be mentioned here and if its popular enough, maybe will have contest with a TBD prize.

8) The Comedy Bureau needs your support both in the way of hugs AND donations. Please donate here.

8) With Veteran’s Day here, please honor all the men and women serving our country and keeping us safe so we can stay out until 3AM talking about how we hate dick jokes/dick jokes.
