Aziz Ansari’s “Modern Romance” Coming Out Jun. 16th

Remember when Aziz Ansari reportedly got a $3.5 million advance for a book on modern relationships? We’re pretty sure that book is called Modern Romance and will be coming out June 16th.

Ansari mounted a year long investigation with a NYU sociologist, hundreds of interviews, focus groups, etc. in order to dissect what the quest for love in the 21st century is really like.

All of that research went into this book Modern Romance through Aziz’s lens and if it’s anything like the bits about love, dating, and relationships that he’s done recently, we think he might be onto something.

It doesn’t come out until the summer, but you can pre-order Modern Romance now.

Well, you have your binge watching for the weekend cut out for you.

The Tina Fey-Robert Carlock series starring Ellie Kemper that Netflix bought from NBC and then renewed for a second season, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has all 13 episodes of season one on Netflix.

Netflix now also has Aziz Ansari’s latest stand-up special, Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden, available to watch.

With all of this to watch, we hope that you don’t have to find someone’s Netflix password right now.

Aziz Ansari premieres his latest stand-up special Fri. Mar. 6th on Netflix, Aziz Ansari: Live at Madison Square Garden. This puts him in exclusive handful of comedians that have taped comedy specials at the massive venue.

Get a preview of what that will look like in this teaser and this bit about immigrant parents.

If you take a look at Aziz’s last comedy Netflix comedy special Buried Alive, Netflix’s comedy specials are only seeming to get bigger and bigger in scope. Maybe he’ll play the O2 Arena next?

The Cast of “Parks and Recreation” Say Goodbye The Only Way They Know How on Late Night

Right after the finale of Parks and Recreation aired last night, the entire cast as well as co-creator Mike Schur (and a special guest that came to “Jamm” things up) appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to relive all the memories.

Of course, the goodbye, perhaps the last time all of them will be in a room together went as memorable and as in the spirit-of-Parks-and-Rec as it could be.

There was a barely rehearsed song for Seth Meyers.

There were toasts from one cast member to another one picked from a hat.

There was even another song that was supposed to be a final rendetion of “Bye, Bye Li’l Sebastian”, but Jim O’Heir, Aubrey Plaza, and Jon Glaser had other plans.

Netflix Planning To Raise Their Debt $1 Billion More For Content Including Comedy Series and Specials

In order to follow up in their plans to release triple the amount of content that they did last year, Netflix is plunking down a big pile of IOUs, around a billon of them in fact.

The online streaming service is set to release 320 hours of their own content, which will include the Wet Hot American Summer mini-series, the next season of BoJack Horseman, and Aziz Ansari’s Live at Madison Square Garden just to name a few.

The four picture deal with The Duplass Brothers just struck at Sundance will probably benefit from this as well.

All told, Netflix seems like it’s full-fledged major studio/network as opposed to just an online streaming service.

Aziz Ansari’s Next Special “Live at Madison Square Garden” Coming to Netflix Mar. 6th

Aziz Ansari is continuing his relationship between Netflix and his stand-up going as his next special will be released exclusively through the online streaming service.

Live at Madison Square Garden will be coming in for a release just over a month from now on Fri. Mar. 6th. Since Parks and Recreation is over, perhaps Ansari might dedicate even more of his time to stand-up and this special could just be the start of that.

Also, we’re not sure if it’s a trend or not, but it seems the title of many specials are returning to the classic “Live at [venue name]” model.

This Year’s Variety Power of Comedy Award Going to Aziz Ansari

Awards season might be bare for comedies as we saw with The Spirit Awards today, but that’s why, we guess, comedy has started proliferating more of its own awards.

Variety is now in its fifth year of honoring a comedian with their Power of Comedy Award and, this year, they have selected Aziz Ansari as the recipient.

There will be a big ceremony that will double as a benefit for the Noreen Fraser Foundation next month in the Belasco Theater featuring stand-up from the likes of Jerrod Carmichael, Tig Notaro, and Nick Kroll though attendance is probably not open to the general public.

Hopefully, Variety will put clips online afterwards.

When she was on SNL, Nasim Pedrad was the go to player to impersonate Kim Kardashian, even though, often, she wanted to impersonate the likes of Aziz Ansari.

So, when chatting with Conan O’Brien last night, Nasim told the story of how her sketch where she impersonated Aziz got cut and her worries over discussing her Kim impression with Kim Kardashian herself.

Aziz Ansari Going on Modern Romance Tour Across North America Next Month

From July through October, Aziz Ansari will be stoping by throughout the U.S. and stopping by Montreal, Canada as well for his Modern Romance tour. The title isn’t a slick label for the tour, but very reflective of the material Aziz is laser focused on right now, which we’re enjoying quite a bit here in LA.

Tickets are now on sale and, hopefully, more dates will be added soon.

Aziz Ansari, Christopher Guest, Aubrey Plaza, and More to Appear at New Yorker Fest 2013

If you still have doubts as to the merits of comedy as an art form, having a substantial part in renowned culture publication The New Yorker’s New Yorker Fest should be a good reference point to start thinking otherwise.

Boosting their comedy programming from last year to include several panels, presentations, and more (including a talk about comedy and politics from comedic genius Armando Ianucci), maybe comedy is starting to get the respect it deserves.

Netflix has been on a role lately with comedy specials getting to the latest hours from Mike Birbiglia and Doug Stanhope first.

Aziz Ansari To Write Relationship Book, Reportedly Gets $3.5 Million Advance

Aziz Ansari’s stand up material has taken a really funny turn to relationships as of late that really break down the finer points of why they don’t work, ostensibly going towards giving up on them all together. This book is surely going to spring from those jokes.

However, there are no details on what the title of the book is, but we’re thinking it might be somewhere around, “WE’RE JUST NOT THAT INTO EACH OTHER”.

We actually got to see Aziz run some of his roast jokes over the past few nights and we have to say that it’s going to be a really nice addition to the dais.

1) NY Comedian Mike DeStefano was just reported of having died of a heart attack. Though this site is mostly dedicated to LA, our condolences go to a comedian that overcame and brought laughter to many though his unflinching honesty.

2) Last night, I took part in my first roast and unfortunately most of my act deals with roasting myself, which is the angle that I took while dishing out insults.  I’m pretty sure the only person that appreciates this approach is the guest of honor being roasted, to all those planning on partaking in a roast in the near future.

3) The LA Times thinks its great that Aziz Ansari thinks Kumail Nanjiani is really funny.

4) Tip of the Hat: Ron Lynch

1) In regards to Huffington Post’s “50 Funniest People of the Decade”, do those in charge of “informing” the public on “what is comedy” even know what comedy is anymore?  Within their end-all, be all list for 2001-2010, they, first off, include Anderson Cooper, a strict journalist.  Out of entire 10 years of comedy, the Huffington Post Comedy Staff actually decided to put the names Anderson Cooper amongst names like Mitch Hedberg, George Carlin, Conan O’Brien, and Paul F. Tompkins, which can only leave me to draw the conclusion that, like so many other “Best/Most Ever” lists, this is more of a popularity contest.  Just like winning the Grammy for “Best Hip Hop Artist” has no actual bearing on talent so much as it does Soundscan’s numbers on someone’s shitty, air-horn laden, drenched-in-autotune single, being put on this particular list of who were the funniest people in the last ten years doesn’t necessarily indicate that the person “defined comedy” in that time (which is what the name of the list leads readers to believe).  I understand that compiling such lists are incredibly stressful and time-consuming as I spent nearly three solid hours composing #Follow2011LAfunniest, a list of who you should follow on Twitter in 2011 (which is way better than Huffington Post version, if I may say so myself).  There is a constant debate, even with only one person calling the shots, in trying to decide who makes the cut, but, you have to be objective as possible with what you’re compiling the list for.  Thus, Huffington Post should have made “The 50 Funniest People that I Happen To Know About and/or Are Really Popular” to be more accurate. That’s why #Follow2011LAfunniest has people that may not have as many followers as @azizansari, but are consistently funnier than him along their entire log of Tweets.  Several people are surprised with omissions of this Huffington Post list considering they are comedians/writers that are much funnier than the one’s featured.  However, in deciphering what that list is really based on, I’m surprised that names omitted include Larry King and Russell Peters.

2) Oh, look, all kidding aside, you could physically make all of these shows, for once, on tonight’s COMEDY CRAWL (as well as afford them): The Not So Inappropriate Show @ UCB Theatre 4PM $12 (stand-by only), ASSSSCAT @ UCB Theatre 7PM FREE, French Toast @ Taix 8:30PM FREE.

3) OPEN MIC RUN: PALMS (call 310 652 6188 before going) 8572 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA/Starts 6PM, SAL’S COMEDY HOLE 7356 Melrose Ave., Hollywood, CA/Starts 6PM/one item min., SUNSET GRILL 7439 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA/Starts 7PM/one item min., MARTY’S/THE OPEN MIC 7351 W. Sunset Blvd., Hollywood, CA (walk up Martel past Big Mama’s and Papa’s)/5PM to 11PM/$5/multiple sets allowed

4) STARTING JAN. 3RD (that’s tomorrow) Scott Aukerman of Comedy Death Ray will host IFC’s own “Comedy Death Ray” featuring a 90 minute block of now-comedy classics like “Arrested Development”, “Freaks and Geeks”, “Undeclared”, “The Larry Sanders Show”, and “The Ben Stiller Show”.  Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, tune in on IFC at 10PM to not only catch some of the best comedy series ever created, but Scott Aukerman and several other figures within the comedy world weighing in on them.

5) Big Trouble in Little Tokyo.  Jokes. Destruction of public property. Fish Tacos. Jackie Kashian & Andy Peters.  Don’t miss it. Señor Fish 422 E. 1st St. Sign up 6:30PM. Starts 7PM.

6) The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” today to LIZZY COOPERMAN: “AFFIRMATIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR [HQ]” Lizzy is almost beyond words, but here I am, yet again, writing about her comedic genius.  Three Time Tip of the Hat winner Lizzy Cooperman is of such a rare ilk of skilled comedic performer that she still makes me laugh with the same jokes even though I’ve heard them 20 times.  You can “witness” her this Tues. Jan 4th at Shooting Gallery @ Club 8572/Palms 8:30PM $10 or Thurs. Jan. 6th at Persona @ The Hollywood Improv Lab 8PM $5.  Website. Twitter. Birds of Prey.

7) From the “You Should Have Been There” Lagoon: Ron Lynch-Comedian of the Future

8) Donate to the Comedy Bureau.  In 2011, there are no other problems, except the Comedy Bureau having $nothing.

9) 2011 Comedy Predictions: Getting a Favstar 100 on Twitter will become more important than doing certain rooms/shows.
