Andy Haynes’ “The Coward of Gramercy” Shows What a Great Pandemic Era Stand Up Comedy Album Can Be

January 18, 2022

In the years that the pandemic has persisted, there have been those of us have decried any sort talk in comedy about COVID-19 or any of its devastating effects, no matter how funny, in theory, comedians could make it. Of course, so much of comedy of any kind is derived from personal experience and why wouldn’t comedians talk about the they’re through with the rest of the 7 and change billion people on the planet?

Andy Haynes, already a great all around stand-up comedian that can play nearly anywhere, put together an hour with The Coward of Gramercy that, we believe, even the most COVID-anxious people can enjoy. After all, comedy can be a force of coping with tragedy as much as it is being the final touches on closure over the very same tragedy.

Haynes’ personal journey through the pandemic is the backbone of the hour as Andy draws sharply funny personal observations about quarantining with his now wife, comedian Rosebud Baker, and offers up the sort of humor that makes the listener feel less alone through this perpetually terrifying reality we’ve been in since 2020. In fact, Andy says “my wife” almost as much as one Borat Sagdiyev used to. As a result, there’s a grounding, comforting perspective from which Haynes works his way through his bits.

Intriguingly, this hour is an artful blend of material from the pandemic and some of Haynes’ hits from pre-pandemic (apologies to Andy if we’re tipping your hand here). However, you wouldn’t likely know that from how well arranged and ordered The Coward of Gramercy really is.

Again, in this fractured normalcy that isn’t normal at all, comedy can certainly help when you actually talk about what you’re going through and Haynes’ Coward of Gramercy is a stellar example of it.

You can stream The Coward of Gramercy wherever you stream your favorite comedy albums. Give it a listen here.

Comedy Central Has Already Taped a New Round of “Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring” Set to Premiere Dec. 1st

With stand-up comedy getting its footing with outdoor shows (wherever they can happen), it was inevitable that a network would make a run at trying to film it in order to have some brand new stand-up content.

Comedy Central went ahead and did another round of their popular stand-up digital series Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring in NYC with a socially distant, masked audience (probably done a little safer than SNL form the looks of it) taped outside. The trailer for this latest batch of exclusive stand-up showcase sets almost resemble something like normal, before-times stand-up, but, of course, the material and the cutaways to the crowd are very much of the moment of the COVID-19 pandemic we’re in right now.

Rosebud Baker, Mary Beth Barone, Brittany Carney, Christi Chiello, Andy Haynes, Josh Johnson, Ismael Loutfi, Gavin Matts, Monroe Martin, Rebecca O’Neal and Eagle Witt all got to take the stage for this very special edition of CC’s digital stand-up series and will very likely have set a precedent of what stand-up comedy will look like for awhile.

Take a look for yourself with the trailer for this round of Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring here, then look for it to start streaming on Comedy Central’s Stand-Up YouTube channel every week starting Dec. 1st.

Andy Haynes served up quite the set last night on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Haynes powers of observation and subsequent skill of distilling them into wondrous, colorful comedic portraits are fully on display here, especially when it comes to the pro-anti-depressant bit that he closes with.

So, watch and enjoy Andy Haynes on Corden here.

Really, it’s almost inexplicable that Donald Trump keeps winning in the primary election.

Well, that is the case until you watch Andy Haynes present all the other sorts of non-sensical and despicable people that comprise all the segments of Trump’s fanbase.

Watch and understand who wants Trump’s version of making America great again.
