Pick of the Day: The Bride of Frankenstein with Live Orchestra (in LA) 10/27 & 10/28

ace hotel, bride of frankenstein, la opera orchestra, los angeles comedy

At nearly 90 years old, Bride of Frankenstein remains a great showcase of how closely tied horror and comedy can be, since it endures as a camp horror gem hailing from 1935. When October rolls around and everything Halloween-themed pops up, a screening of the James Whale classic starring Elsa Lanchester and the legendary Boris Karloff.

How about a very special screening of the movie with a live orchestra? Did you even know that still happens?

Well, The LA Opera Orchestra is indeed live scoring this exclusive screening of Bride of Frankenstein with Jenny Wong conducting Franz Waxman’s original score on Fri. Oct. 27th & Sat. Oct. 28th. In true 30s movie style, they’ll be doing it at a veritable movie palace of old, the Theatre at Ace Hotel in DTLA. While you’re surely going to get your horror movie fix throughout October, there probably won’t be any sort of screenings as grand as this one.

Tickets are only $29 for Bride of Frankenstein with the LA Opera Orchestra and you really ought to get them here sooner rather than later.

Pick of the Day: Comedy Bang! Bang! Live (in LA) 8/14

It has been more than quite some time since the world has gotten to see Scott Aukerman and co. take the stage to bring everyone another edition of one of the foundational pillars of the wide world of comedy podcasts, Comedy Bang! Bang!

For several years, Aukerman and deft comedic minds like Paul F. Tompkins, Lauren Lapkus, Carl Tart, and more have blurred the lines between the most absurd characters chatting it up with real guests. The live version of CBB is even more rambunctious and something that no comedy fan should really miss out on (even if you’re somehow not acquainted with the pod).

Thankfully, Comedy Bang! Bang! is playing the grand Theatre at the Ace Hotel in DTLA on this Sun. Aug. 14th at 6PM PT. Joining Scott will be, of course, Paul F. Tompkins as well as…

…The CBB World All-Stars:
Enteé PEe Neur’s Entrepreneur Tour (with Ego Nwodim, Carl Tart, and Drew Tarver)
Hey Randy! (With Tim Baltz, Mary Sohn, Dan Lippert, and Lily Sullivan)
Bonanas For Bonanza (with Andy Daly and Matt Gourley)

We have no doubt that this will be one of LA’s biggest, most iconic comedy shows of the year and it might be worth the at least $49 ticket price that doesn’t include service/delivery fees. Go get more details/tix here while you still can.

So, you get both of them, which could be a great bill on its own, plus a live score and so much more. If this sounds pretty swell to you, tickets are $39-$49 (but you can knock off $5 w/code LIVESTORIES). Go get those tickets here.

Sundance’s Next Fest to Screen ‘Life After Beth’, ‘Listen Up Philip’, and more

Sundance has a small weekend, long film festival here in LA called Sundance Next Fest combining indie film and music. So far, they’ve got plenty of comedies line-up including Life After Beth, Napoleon Dynamite, Jim Jarmusch’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, and Listen Up Philip.

Coupled with that is musical performances from Father John Misty, Warpaint, and Tinashe. Also, you’ll get to enjoy Next Fest at Hollywood Forever Cemetery and the theatre at the Ace Hotel in Downtown LA.

Sounds pretty cool to us, so we think you should make plans for the weekend of Aug. 7th-Aug. 10th and should get your tickets.
