Really, You Should Try Jokes Out on a Megaphone Under a Floodlamp

If you are a comedian in LA (or even if you’re not and you just wanted to say things amplified and people have to listen) at an outdoor public arena on a megaphone, now you can.

Thanks to Jason Van Glass and Rob Schultz and the Verdugo Park in Burbank, the Floodlamp Open “Meg” is one of the newest open mics in LA for comedians to try out their material. According to the Todd Glass parameters of comedy venues (see: I Am Comic), “the Floodlamp” breaks nearly every rule, which understandably worries anyone thinking about trying their material at an “Open Meg”.

There are no ceilings or walls. There is no stage. There is no mic or mic stand. There are passing pedestrians that sometimes have strollers with babies in them. There is passing traffic as well as kids that ride by on their BMX bikes. Also, it’s completely outside (in case you haven’t figured that out by now). The single floodlamp does, however, provide a pretty decent light for the performer.

Still, Jason and Rob have managed to put together an open mic that’s both more attentive and supportive than most. In fact, some of those kids stop riding their bikes and quietly listen to the person on the “meg”.

There is no cover, minimum, and the peaceful element of the park brings sort of a calm that isn’t often found in dive bars, coffee shops, laundry mats, or any other unconventional place where there’s a comedy open mic. Sure, a tent and a stage and more would be nice, but an attentive crowd watching the performer are the basis for a good comedy open mic.

The Floodlamp’s 5th show is at sundown this Friday around 7PM at 3201 W. Verdugo Ave., Burbank, CA. Sign-up is by lottery. Alloted time is determined by how many people sign-up. If you’re really making a go at comedy, “welcoming” shouldn’t be a word that you should always looking for, but the Floodlamp Open Meg is indeed a welcoming and safe place for comedians to expand themselves artistically.

Also, it’s really nice to be outside in LA at night, or in our case, outside in general.

That’s pretty much our thoughts on 9/11 exactly, minus the Hitler interpretative dancing and we didn’t live in Portland (still, Hitler can suck it).

Rick Overton opened almost every show at the Edinburgh Fringe, and gained a following for his mad Set List skills. Rick will also be opening the shows at Flappers Comedy Club in Burbank EVERY Sunday at 9pm starting Sept. 18.

Hear that? Set List is back in town after touring the world and Rick Overton’s opening every show at Flappers on Sundays. It’s improvised stand-up the way it should be done and none of you should miss it.

1) Deadline reports that TBS orders a half-hour comedy pilot from Conan O’Brien [via PopCultureBrain].

2) It’s official, Funny or Die & Earwolf have joined forces today to bring comedy to the online masses on the video and audio fronts. There’s even a “How Podcasts are Made” FoD exclusive to commemorate the event. Unfortunately, according to sources, will not be going by Funny Ear and/or Die Wolf.

Hendersons & Daughters & Why You Need to Be Listening to the Sklar Brothers

There’s no question that comedy, especially stand-up, is going through a boom right now. So much innovative, trailblazing funny content, whether it be podcasts, videos, albums, etc. is being thrown in and out everyday at such a blistering pace, it can be hard to know where to start if you’re not already a comedy nerd or aficionado. The Sklar Brothers’ latest album “Hendersons & Daughters” is both a wonderful starting point for those not so well-versed in the burgeoning comedy world as well as those who are zealous followers of it.

First off, both Randy and Jason Sklar are simply fun to listen to. Their almost indistinguishable voices, comedic timing, and rhythm get jokes off quick and have punchlines, of which there are several, hit hard. As fast as any single one-liner comic, the Sklar Brothers explore their premises so extensively in order to wring out every last bit of funny to make for a comedic style that’s completely Sklar. Coupled with that are their hilarious, free-flowing, act outs (with farcical non-sequitur asides), which are so extensive and throughly funny, they could be full length sketches.

On Hendersons & Daughters, Randy & Jason offer up more than several examples of their comedic prowess that begs for repeated listens. Though they’re twins, as a testament to their dedication to setting themselves apart comedically (though not from each other), they have only two jokes referring to them being twins. That may not be impressive to the casual comedy fan, but any other twin comedy duo would absolutely resort that to being their whole act, not to mention to probably follow comedic duo model of the Smothers Brothers, which they dutifully manage to stay away from.

Another interesting feat on Hendersons is the Sklars’ original angle on topics that have been almost overdone in comedy and how they’ve made it organically funny. There are bits about Scharzeneggar, fairy tales, and even the comedy community’s favorite band to hate, Creed. Yet, Randy and Jason really dig for their sincere observations on said topics to not only come up with hysterical, original material, but also form the story of adapting to a life balancing being husbands with kids as well as their identity as the Sklar Brothers. Gleaning from their own life then comedically dissecting it as the Sklars so expertly do, they very well may have the best take on nursery rhymes in the last several years.

Though one can get lost in the constant barrage of comedy, The Sklar Brothers’ “Hendersons & Daughters” is an exemplary record for the craft of stand-up comedy and something that you should go buy or download right now. Limited edition, signed copies available at Earwolf.
