Watch Teaser for Barry (Where Bill Hader Plays an Assassin Trying His Hand at Acting)

December 4, 2017
Uncategorized

HBO’s latest comedy offering will be coming in spring 2018 and indeed feature Bill Hader as a world class assassin who delves into acting.

Here’s a teaser.

So, we’re getting hints of Grosse Point Blank, except it revolves around an acting class as opposed to a high school reunion. We hope that Hader uses the platform to get as off beat as he can.

There are so many subtleties in the art of telling jokes. One of those is the delivery of a joke, which most people (and comedians) take for granted.

However, the smooth, dulcet tones of and uninterrupted, carefully crafted flow of words can make put an undeniable shine on one’s comedy.

Matt Knudsen has been a paramount comedian in this regard combined with an extremely keen sense of observation. He proves, once again, that he is stand-up of such quality with his latest album Yes And.

Get it and hear so for yourself on iTunes or Bandcamp.

Watch Trailer for Slick Thriller Dark Comedy “Thoroughbreds” (That Also Happens to Be One of Anton Yelchin’s Last Films)

The impressively stylish and deliciously dark look of Cory Finley’s writer-director debut Thoroughbreds and Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke seeming like they serve up pitch perfect performances and the dark buddy murderer comedy premise are all good reasons to make a point of catching Thoroughbreds.

Also, the unfortunately late Anton Yelchin also stars here in a supporting role as one of his last roles before he died in a freak accident. Yelchin also seems like he delivers a fine performance in the film, which you probably won’t want to miss.

See for yourself in the trailer.

Thoroughbreds hits theaters in March 2018.

While that does seem a far off, we have a feeling it’ll be worth the wait, especially if Slate does her own audiobook.

Between Lady Bird, The Big Sick, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and The Disaster Artist, Comedy Is Being Taken Seriously This Awards Season

November 30, 2017
Uncategorized
awards season, beatriz at dinner, big sick, disaster artist, ingrid goes west, lady bird, op ed, three billboards outside of ebbing missouri

Yes, Lady Bird just set a new record for Rotten Tomatoes for being the best reviewed movie in the site’s history, which comes as no surprise to us for how much it really does live up to its own hype.

Yet, Lady Bird is not the only comedy movie receiving heaps of praise as well as multiple award nominations and award wins (Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, National Board of Review).

Comedy, just like horror, is having a banner year in movie theaters.

The Disaster Artist has won at The Gotham Awards and the Hollywood Film Awards as well as gained nominations at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Toronto International Film Festival.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri has won at the Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Hollywood Film Awards, British Independent Film Awards and been nominated in multiple categories for both British Independent Film Awards and the Spirit Awards.

The Big Sick has won at The Gotham Awards, Hollywood Film Awards, and SXSW and is also nominated at The Spirit Awards.

Nominations have been handed out to the likes of Ingrid Goes West and Beatriz at Dinner as well. You should also not forget that Ruben Östlund’s The Square, a hilariously scathing satire of the high art world, landed the Palme d’Or at Cannes, a rare honor for something so funny.

Normally, drama dominates film awards across the table and maybe, just maybe, one comedy like In The Loop or Grand Budapest Hotel will satisfy some genre diversity at such prestigious institutions like the ones named above or The Oscars.

In fact, we can’t even remember a year where such a plethora of comedy that is unequivocally identifiable as comedy (as opposed to The Martian or Nebraska) getting so much distinction in the film world.

However, we’re certainly not the first to tell you that this year is anything but normal.

This Year’s Grammy Nominations for Comedy All Go to The Most Famous Comedians with Netflix Specials

November 29, 2017
Uncategorized
comedy, grammys, stand up

The 2018 Grammy nominees for “Best Comedy Album” are as follows:

The Age Of Spin & Deep In The Heart Of Texas — Dave Chappelle
Cinco — Jim Gaffigan
Jerry Before Seinfeld — Jerry Seinfeld
A Speck Of Dust — Sarah Silverman
What Now? — Kevin Hart

It’s no secret that the Grammys have largely been a popularity contest for quite a long time. In music, there seems to be a whole world outside of what the Grammys pay attention to that gets as much, if not more, critical praise (and commercial success thanks to the Internet) than what charts and gets nominated.

The same goes for the Grammys’ comedy category, which hardly pays attention to the plethora of brilliant of comedy albums released every year that don’t have the advantage of getting extra exposure beforehand with having been a special on a network or major streaming service. This year’s nomination made that dichotomy more glaringly clear than ever.

Yes, there are many reasons that Chappelle, Gaffigan, Seinfeld, Silverman, and Hart are all household names in comedy and some of these hours are pretty good. Still, know that there were better albums released this year from Jackie Kashian, Shane Torres, and Myq Kaplan.

Unlike with music, there aren’t other, alternative, respected awards that other comedy albums made by people who haven’t had successful TV shows that bears their name can get in on. Sure, we and other comedy sites/blogs do our due diligence, but we can only reach so far.

So, with all of that said, please buy/listen/relisten to I Am Not the Hero of This Story, Established 1981, and No Kidding.
