Honestly, we think it’s a travesty that Lizzy Cooperman isn’t more of a known name in comedy. She’s one of the first people we ever saw live that opened our minds to the possibility of what comedy, specifically stand-up could be all those years ago when we started the Bureau.

So, we really urge you to go to one (or both) of the FREE tapings of her album (that will also have the brilliant Karen Kilgariff hosting) at the end of the month.

RSVP here.

If you wonder how Adam Pally might handle a situation like the one in Hitchcock’s classic Rear Window, look no further than Most Likely to Murder.

Pally unintentionally stumbling into a mystery along with Rachel Bloom and Vincent Kartheiser as seen in this trailer looks pretty fun. Dan Gregor who directed and co-wrote with Doug Mand have got some pretty clever bits of physical comedy in here.

If you’re into it, look for Most Likely to Murder to be released digitally on May 1st.

Really, of the things you should be doing today (if you’re close to a theater that is playing Death of Stalin), one of your main priorities should be to see The Death of Stalin, Armando Iannucci’s latest film.

It being Iannucci’s latest film is reason enough to buy a ticket to go see it (not to mention that Armando Iannucci is near unparalleled in creating hysterical and oh-too-poignant political satire including The Thick of It, In The Loop, and Veep).

Get in on “The Struggle”, Candice Thompson’s New Podcast

There are more than a handful of podcasts that dive into the anxieties, fears, insecurities, etc. of comedians, but they can often be, in an enlightening way, sobering.

Candice Thompson shines in her new podcast The Struggle as she strikes a balance between sympathy and empathy for all sorts of issues while also maintaining an undeniably upbeat tone with plenty of charisma to spare. Thompson is only a few episodes in, but her, her co-hosts Mal Hall and Jackie Fabulous, and her guests (Ramon Rivas and Justine Marino thus far) show off how struggles can translate directly into something that can be laughed at when gaining awareness and a bit of agency over said struggle.

So, listen, subscribe, and most importantly enjoy The Struggle with Candice Thompson.

Netflix Orders Australian Comedy Series From Chris Lilley

10 episodes of a series from Australian comedy multi-hyphenate star Chris Lilley, the creator of Summer Heights High and Ja’mie: Private School Girl, will be coming your way soon courtesy of Netflix.

No details have been revealed as to what the show will be and what get up Lilley will be wearing this time around, but we’re sure it’ll be a delightful surprise whenever it’s announced.

As you can see, if global domination in TV comedy is Netflix’s goal, they are well on their way.

James Comey to Appear on Colbert in First Late Night Appearance

On April 17th, former FBI Director James Comey will sit down with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show for an interview.

We’re not exactly sure what to expect, especially with how forthcoming Comey may or may not be about anything or how sobering or playful Colbert will be (our guess is probably both). Still, this has to be pretty historic as FBI Directors tend to not make appearances on late night.

Come to think of it, it’d almost be worth doing the episode live just to see if Trump would respond on Twitter in real time allowing Colbert and Comey to have a back-and-forth with POTUS who probably will have something more important to do.

Amazon Orders Its First Animated Dramedy Series ‘Undone’ from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy of BoJack Horseman

Amazon Orders Its First Animated Dramedy Series ‘Undone’ from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy of BoJack Horseman

Surprising at it may sound, Amazon apparently hasn’t entered the animation space quite like their main competitor Netflix has.

They’re looking to fix that with an animated dramedy from Raphael Bob-Waksberg and Kate Purdy, two of the mind’s behind the successful Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman. Called Undone, it has a bit of a sci-fi edge to it as the lead Alma has some sort of special power involving time after surviving a car crash.

Alma will be voiced by Rosa Salazar who, coincidentally, also plays an android heroine in the upcoming sci-fi action adventure movie, Alita: Battle Angel.

One can only imagine if this and Tuca and Bertie (the upcoming animated series at Netflix from BoJack Horseman’s producer and production designer Lisa Hanawalt) take off and BoJack will have sprouted an animated series dynasty.

Look for Undone to start streaming on Amazon Prime in 2019.

Funny Or Die Will Be Moving To Vox Media’s Digital Platform Starting This Summer

Funny or Die started years ago with The Landlord and spawned an online comedy empire that even had its own proprietary media player separate from YouTube and Vimeo, but has come across hard times as of late.

Now, they’ll be partnering with online media conglomerate Vox and using their digital platforms and technology to keep FoD going. Their exact plans are vague at this point, especially with a list of goals of the parternship that FoD has already had for quite some time,

However, the idea that Funny or Die recently had a notable wave of layoffs and is fully partnering with another media company has to make one think of the ongoing struggle between art and commerce when it comes making money from comedy online (i.e. even something as established as FoD needs help these days).

Sara Schaefer Imagines a Dystopian-ish Future and Reminisces About Real Life Present Day with “Loner at Coyowolf Creek”

At this point in this age of podcasts, one could reasonably wonder how someone could come up with a new podcast that’s innovative, engaging, and quietly beautiful, especially in the comedy podcast space.

Enter Sara Schaefer’s Loner at Coyowolf Creek.

Schaefer podcasts “from the future” where she imagines that the America we know now is referred to as “America 1″ and the dystopian (but not quite an Orwellian dystopia) America she lives in is known as “America 2″ divided by actual, federally mandated “bubble zones” mostly because no one could reasonably talk to each other (kind of like it actually is in real life 2018).

Not only does Schaefer build an entire quasi-futuristic, yet grounded world in her podcast that’s kind of marvelous in its solitude (she records her podcast as a “government approved designated loner”), but she “looks back” at the time that we’re currently in and gives her thoughts that she had at that time in America 1, then offers up what consequently happened in America 2.

If you were to think of it as an episode of Black Mirror, it’s one that’s not as hopeful as “San Junipero”, but yet not quite as terrifying as “Metalhead”.

So, please listen, subscribe, and enjoy Loner at Coyowolf Creek.

Comedy Scores Big at 2018 Spirit Awards + John Mulaney and Nick Kroll’s Opening Monologue

While Get Out took top honors of Best Feature and Best Director at this year’s Spirit Awards, seemingly every other award went towards comedy as you can see below:

BEST FEMALE LEAD – Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST SUPPORTING FEMALE – Allison Janney, I, Tonya
BEST SUPPORTING MALE – Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
BEST SCREENPLAY – Greta Gerwig, Lady Bird
BEST EDITING – Tatiana S. Riegel, I, Tonya
BEST FIRST FEATURE – Ingrid Goes West (Director: Matt Spicer, Producers: Jared Ian Goldman, Adam Mirels, Robert Mirels, Aubrey Plaza, Tim White, Trevor White)
BEST FIRST SCREENPLAY – Emily V. Gordon, Kumail Nanjiani, The Big Sick

Hopefully, that’s a good omen for the Oscar results later tonight.

Get the full list of 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards Winners here.

Also, John Mulaney and Nick Kroll served up another sharp awards show monologue that was fun and loose, but also game to go a little dark or blue. Watch it here.

One last thing to notice: We’re pretty sure Timothy Chalemet had Armie Hammer who was on a beard shirtless on Facetime (as Hammer was not present at the ceremony). It definitely sweetened the Call Me By Your Name chunk of the monologue.

As The Oscars tonight, we thought it’d we should give you a heads up on one of the few Oscar nominated comedies over the last several years (tonight’s a little different as Lady Bird, I, Tonya, The Big Sick, The Disaster Artist, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Square all scored nominations this year).

So, Wes Anderson Oscar nominated Moonrise Kingdom is playing at The Aero Theatre in Santa Monica a week from now. On top of it being another critically acclaimed part of Wes Anderson’s filmography, it’s also an escapist comedy adventure to a fictional time and place if that’s something you need right now for some reason.
