Watch Conan O’Brien Get Into The Rum, Song, Dance, Cigars of Cuba

March 5, 2015
Uncategorized
cigar factory, conan, cuba, el malecon, havana, rum, salsa

Conan O’Brien’s visit to Cuba aired as a special episode of Conan sans a monologue or sketches and was effectively a big long remote segment, which is one of the best parts of his show.

During his stay, Conan went through what a normal travel show might do in Cuba by taking dancing lessons, joining in a salsa band, taking Spanish lessons, visiting a rum museum, or touring through a Cigar factory, staring out at the sunset from a rooftop, experiencing Cuban fine dining, visiting El Malecón, or even having a farewell bit, but he did so as only Conan can do with his infectious silliness. In fact, Conan pulls off being the most fun loving goodwill ambassador there’s ever been in this Conan in Cuba special.

You can watch clips in the links above or watch the whole episode here.

Sony Pictures Has Hired Diablo Cody to Rewrite a Live Action “Barbie” Movie

March 5, 2015

(via Deadline)

There has been a movie in the works at Sony Pictures adapting the long standing “Barbie” toy franchise into a movie. With the success that The LEGO Movie has had, there seems to be a shift in having an unconventional and new spin on what a movie based on Barbie could be.

So, Sony has tapped Diablo Cody to write a draft. While we wouldn’t be surprised at all that many of you reading this are, at the very least, skeptical, we were all this skeptical about a movie about LEGOs being made. Given Cody’s resume, her version of a Barbie movie could be fun ride, especially as a comedy rather than the typical light adventure that most toy based movies go on, but we’ll see if Sony sticks with her and what rating they’ll aim for.

So, “Saturday Night Live” Is Franchising Out to China

March 5, 2015
Uncategorized

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Seeing the potential in audiences among the enormous population of China, more international collaborations between U.S. productions and ones in China are happening more frequently.

The latest example is how China’s video site Sohu.com has partnered with Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video to make a Saturday Night Live for Chinese audiences with Chinese comedians and performers.

The prospect of having a weekly topical sketch show in China is exciting, but we can only ponder what they could possibly get away with in terms of poking fun at the government like the American SNL so often does. One only needs to watch the documentary Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry to see how the Chinese government feels about artists speaking out against them. Lord knows that there’s plenty that’s ripe for a damning and hilarious sketch.

Who knows if it would be even done live in a way that censors didn’t get a chance to have something cut out from the show before reaching the millions upon millions of people that could potentially see it.

What will be even more intriguing to see is how they’ll approach sketch comedy in a cultural climate that’s much different here than in the U.S. Hopefully, this will be a voice that gets to speak out more comedically than any before them.

That’s why were glad to see that he’ll be starring in a divorce comedy pilot at CBS “The Half of It” from Mike Gibbons, who also happens to be the executive producer at The Late Late Show with James Corden.

We know this is just a pilot and it still has yet to be shot, then considered for series, but in regards to seeing more of Dore, we say it’s about damn time.

James Corden Wants To Change Up The Traditional Late Night Format With “The Late Late Show”

March 4, 2015
Uncategorized
cbs, james corden, letterman, reggie watts, the late late show

In a recent interview with Variety, the new host of The Late Late Show, James Corden let on a little as to what he might have up his sleeve.

The traditional late night format of monologue, sketch, guest, etc. are going to be “tinkered” with as Corden doesn’t think of himself as a stand-up comedian that could plow through monologue jokes night after night.

Instead, Corden is going to have the inimitable Reggie Watts as his bandleader and plans on focusing in on his acting, singing, and dancing background. On top of that, he also seems to have a very charming sense of self-deprecation.

Being at 12:35AM will allow James to definitely play up Watts spontaneity and we can only hope that he runs in that direction hard and fast.

You should note that the last time a late night host who didn’t have a background in stand-up and could sing and dance and had overwhelming charisma while constantly poking fun at themselves was Conan O’Brien when he started out at Late Night in 1993. Knowing that, we’re looking forward to James Corden taking over on Mar. 23rd more and more.

Also, you can hear about the shade that David Letterman threw at Corden while appearing on The Late Late Show when Regis Philbin was filling in.

NBC Planning Subscription Based Online Streaming Service For Comedy

(via Wall Street Journal)

NBC must be taking cues from how well comedy does online with the dedicated fan bases of The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Community as they’re now developing a subscription online service targeted for comedy. It’s not clear how this service will work specifically, but if it’s more like HBO GO, then that’s probably a step in the right direction.

NBC is saying episodes of The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live will be available, we’re more curious about the fates of the aforementioned Office, Parks and Rec, etc. and whether they will be taken off of Hulu and Netflix to live exclusively at this NBC streaming service.

Also, more content will be developed for this service, which, we hope means that they will be putting more backing behind certain pilots like Adam Scott and Joe Mande’s dispensary comedy.

Charlie Rose got all he could possibly bargain for when doing an entire profile on Larry David this past Sunday on 60 Minutes. At every turn, even when going to his childhood home, David was as unflinchingly “Larry David” as he could be in turning almost all questions on their head into something you could so easily hear come out of George Costanza’s mouth or David’s on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

There was even a post-interview interview of Charlie Rose to see how went go about attempting to find the real Larry David.

Watch the thoroughly fun profile here.

Trevor Moore’s new special High in Church premieres this Fri. Mar. 6th at midnight on Comedy Central, but we’ve been getting small previews here and there of the sharp, very clever satire that’s in store.

First there was a parallel universe where cats acted exactly like us and now there’s this new music video for “Gays Got Married” where Moore envisions what people against gay marriage are thinking will happen when gay marriage is passed as law.

Of course, the message seems most poignant when done as a country song.
